Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation (open access)

Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

Geological Investigation of the Trachyte District, Henry Mountains, Utah

Abstract: Uranium-vanadium ore has long been known in the Trachyte district. Production started in 1913 and has been erratic and intermittent to date. Until recently, practically all production from the Henry Mountains area has come from the Trachyte district.

A Comparison of the Neutron Yields from Low-Voltage Sources (open access)

A Comparison of the Neutron Yields from Low-Voltage Sources

The description of the thick-target neutron yields from the D(t,n)He4 and the D(d,n)He3 reactions is calculated as a function of the energy of the bombarding particles. For 60-kev particles the ratio is 108. I increases to 168 at 100 Kev and to 194 for 120-kev particles. A qualitative discussion of the yields from various deuterium target leads to the conclusion that the greatest yield would come from the target which has the lowest stopping cross section per deuterium atom.

Cyclotron Component Design Technical Reports (open access)

Cyclotron Component Design Technical Reports

From introduction: The study of cyclotron-magnet design presented here is directed toward attaining a large ratio of energy in the ion beam with respect to cost. Alternatively, the goal may be regarded as a smaller, more convenient apparatus. These two objectives are not completely incompatible; a design that is more economical than the usual is also smaller. The best design of a cyclotron can be obtained only by considering the problem as a whole. The conditions necessary to maintain an ion beam, the conditions required for the operation of the oscillator, and a host of other problems influence the design of the magnet. It is assumed in this paper that the "other problems" can be satisfactorily solved, if the gap has a suitable geometry and the field a suitable space dependence.

Dynamic Response of Reactor Plant to Load Changes. Section I. First Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-251 (T-612390) (open access)

Dynamic Response of Reactor Plant to Load Changes. Section I. First Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-251 (T-612390)

The purpose of the test was to determine the responses of the plant when subjected to load transients exceeding the design magnitudes, and to determine the maximum load changes, positive or negative, that the plant can sustain. The reactor plant responded satisfactorily to all load transients. The only limits exceed were the pressurizer high and low level alarm points. The magnitude of the transients and the time required for the plant to return to equilibrium was dependent upon the size of the the load change. The pressurizer spray was effective in reducing reactor coolant pressure positive surges; however, this resulted in larger negative surges than when the spray valve was closed.

An Investigation of Scaling of Zirconium at Elevated Temperatures Quarterly Status Report no. 9.June 2, 1955 to Sept. 2, 1955

To obtain a better understanding of the mechanism involved in scaling behavior of zirconium, kinetic studies were made of the weight pickup in air after the following pretreatments; (1) exposure to oxygen or nitrogen, (2) exposure to air, oxygen or nitrogen and removal of the resulting surface compounds.

Corrosion Effects of Lowering the pH in TBP Waste Storage Tanks (open access)

Corrosion Effects of Lowering the pH in TBP Waste Storage Tanks

Large savings in waste storage space may be realized by lowering the pH at which TBP waste is stored. Additional savings in neutralizing chemicals and operating time would also increase the monetary gain from such a process change. However, before such a change could be made, the corrosive effect of TBP waste at a lower pH on the mild steel waste storage tanks had to be determined.

A Numerical Integration Scheme for Problems Involving Contour Representations

The definition of the Lebesgue integral is used to develop a numerical integration method in which the integral is evaluated directly from a contour plot of the function. It is useful in working from weather maps, potential surfaces, etc., but was particularly designed to assist in reducing blast diffraction space-time diagrams to simple, meaningful quantities.

Radioactive Isotopes of Bismuth (open access)

Radioactive Isotopes of Bismuth

Five isotopes of bismuth occur in nature. Using particle accelerators providing helium ions up to 40 Mev in energy and deuterons up to 20 Mev in energy, it was possible to produce and identify two artificial radioactive isotopes. With the advent of the 184-inch Berkeley syncho-cyclotron and its hundreds of Mev energies, it was possible to form highly neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes extending more than ten mass units below stable Bi(209).
