Compatibility testing of vitrified waste forms (open access)

Compatibility testing of vitrified waste forms

An experimental program to evaluate candidate metals for use in the fabrication of canisters for long-term storage of vitrified radioactive wastes is described. The long-term compatibility of the candidate metal both with the contained vitrified radioactive waste and with the external environments expected in possible final storage locations will be determined. These tests involve heating combinations of waste forms and canister metals in intimate contact for up to 50,000 hr to accelerate any reactions that occur.

[Letter from Cassandra Broadus to Melanie Wright, March 6, 1991]

Photocopy of a letter from Cassandra Broadus, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Melanie Wright, Dallas Museum of Art. Broadus requests the use of two or three permanent pieces from the DMA to use in "Art-O-Gram" and "Class Acts" an art education newspaper series in the Fort Worth Star Telegram. The articles are designed for children to give them something more than just an art project but to talk about and view work critically and develop better communication skills.

Large-area sheet task advanced dendritic web growth development. Quarterly report, October 23, 1983-December 31, 1983 (open access)

Large-area sheet task advanced dendritic web growth development. Quarterly report, October 23, 1983-December 31, 1983

Two types of design concepts were evaluated with the thermal models: (1) a vertical thermal element which modifies both the temperature profile in the web as well as the convective gas flow near the web; and (2) a thinner lid configuration in which the second lid is replaced by a hot cavity. Each involves trade-offs which need experimental evaluation. Residual stress measurements using the serial split-width technique indicated that the real residual stress was comparable to (or less than) the equivalent residual stress, which has been used as a measure of structural perfection in web crystals in previous reports. New dynamic and new static configurations were given preliminary evaluation in the laboratory, with results generally in agreement with the made predictions. Improved system temperature measurements were made leading to growth in closer agreement with the model predictions. Improved methods for controlling convective gas flow and oxide deposition were developed.

The effect of chemical additives on the synthesis of ethanol (open access)

The effect of chemical additives on the synthesis of ethanol

The objective of this research was to investigate the reaction mechanism of higher alcohol and aldehyde synthesis from syngas and the role of additives in the synthesis. An in situ IR reaction system and probe molecule technique were developed to study adsorbed species, active sites, and reaction pathway during reaction. The catalysts used for this study included silica-supported Rh, Ru, and Ni. (VC)

A universal, fault-tolerant, non-linear analytic network for modeling and fault detection (open access)

A universal, fault-tolerant, non-linear analytic network for modeling and fault detection

The similarities and differences of a universal network to normal neural networks are outlined. The description and application of a universal network is discussed by showing how a simple linear system is modeled by normal techniques and by universal network techniques. A full implementation of the universal network as universal process modeling software on a dedicated computer system at EBR-II is described and example results are presented. It is concluded that the universal network provides different feature recognition capabilities than a neural network and that the universal network can provide extremely fast, accurate, and fault-tolerant estimation, validation, and replacement of signals in a real system.

Enhanced durability and reactivity for zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent (open access)

Enhanced durability and reactivity for zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent

AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for enhancing the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Zinc ferrite sorbents are intended for use in desulfurization of hot coal gas in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) applications. For the present program, the reactivity of the sorbent may be defined as its sulfur sorption capacity at the breakthrough point and at saturation in a bench-scale, fixed-bed reactor. Durability may be defined as the ability of the sorbent to maintain important physical characteristics such As size, strength, and specific surface area during 10 cycles of sulfidation and oxidation.
