This design consists in "a central post, the latch-posts arranged at equal distances on opposite sides of the central post and provided with suitable catches, the latches pivoted at their inner ends to the center post and adapted to engage the said catches, the operating-bar affixed at its center to the upper end of the center post and at right angles to the gate, the loop connected at its free ends, respectively, to the latches, and the operating-cords running over guide-pulleys . . . and connected at their ends to the closed upper end of the loop" (lines 1-13).

Means for Controlling the Flow of Navigable Rivers or Other Waters.

Patent for a new means of controlling the waters. This design "is to remove or prevent the formation of sand-bars at the mouths of harbors elsewhere, calculated to obstruct navigation; also, to prevent the overflow of navigable rivers and the breaking of levees or destruction of jetties. [The] invention consists in a novel means of accomplishing these and other like ends by mechanical forces applied to increase the natural current or outflow of the navigable water toward its outlet or the ocean through the instrumentality of suitably located and anchored vessels provided with propelling devices" (lines 8-21).

Patent for a new and improved cultivator. This design "relates to that class of walking-cultivators or shovel-plows which are drawn by a single horse between two rows of plants, and which are frequently called 'double-shovel plows.' The leading object of the invention is to provide such a cultivator with two beams, each carrying a shovel, which beams are independently capable of vertical and lateral movements, whereby the operator can guide or lift the beams and shovels to avoid plants or obstacles" (lines 11-22).

Machine for Putting Ties on Bales.

Patent for a new and improved machine for putting ties on bales. This design consists in a "frame-work which is to be placed across the bale . . . a shaft journaled in the frame and provided with a reel at each end, and pawls and ratchets with hooked ropes or chains . . . a double rope which is to be passed around the bale . . . and suitable U-shaped hooks . . . to provide a machine whereby cotton and other bales can be compressed at that point where the tie has come off, so as to allow another tie to be placed around the bale, and thus prevent the loss of material" (lines 16-33).

This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the clip having the ears provided with the openings of the draft-iron having the eye at its inner end adapted to be inserted between the ears of the clip and having the transverse central opening" (lines 94-98). Further, it has "the coupling-bolt having the inclined shoulder and the nut provided with the [other] inclined shoulder and the sleeves having the inclined inner ends adapted to enter the inclines of the draft-iron and provided at their outer ends with the inclined recesses" (lines 1-7).
