Beeville Main Street 1914

View of Washington Street in 1914 looking north. The red brick three stories building on the left was the first “skyscraper” for Beeville. It was the Grand Opera House, built by A.F. Rees and E.J. Kinkler at the corner of Washington and Bowie Streets in 1907, and opened in 1908. Many Broadway stage plays, musical comedies, and light operas were presented in the opera house. The building was destroyed by fire in 1919. The building to the left of the Grand Opera House was Beeville’s first bank, the First National Bank of Beeville, which opened in 1890, and moved to this location by 1894. This postcard shows the modes of transportation available in the early 1900’s, a buggy, automobile, wagon and horse. By 1908 automobiles were owned by several individuals in Beeville.

The roofs and second stories of the buildings on the north side of the square are shown as well as the tops of the sidewalk canopies. "Telephone Office" is painted above the second floor windows of the building on the corner, and the second store balcony along the side of that building is shown. Printed on the top left of the image is the title "Bird's Eye View of Marshall, Texas." The postmark on the back of the card reads "Marshall, Texas, Sep 29, 1912." It is addressed to Miss Mary L. Thomas, Victoria, Texas.

The George O'Brien Millard School was a public elementary school in Beaumont started about 1910 and sometimes known as just Millard School. George O'Brien Millard was a prominent Beaumont citizen who helped develop the public school system in Beaumont. Printed on the top left of the postcard is "Geo. B. Millard School, Beaumont, Texas." Handwritten on the back of the postcard, "All O.K. Weather perfectly grand and things are lovely. I return to E.T June 12. Wouldn't you like to see me? Love to Aunt Lizzie & all. Hazel." The card is addressed to Mr. James Mortin, Cochituate, Mass.
