Biennial Report on Texas Public Schools: 2020

The 2020 Comprehensive Biennial Report on Texas Public Schools describes the status of Texas public education, as required by §39.332 of the Texas Education Code. This chapter of the 2020 Comprehensive Biennial Report on Texas Public Schools presents the progress the state is making on the performance indicators established in Texas law. These indicators were presented in Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) reports from 1990-91 to 2011-12. In the 2012-13 school year, the AEIS was renamed the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) to reflect changes in legislation. Detailed analyses of three key performance indicators can be found in Chapters 2 and 5 of this report. Chapter 2 presents State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) results, and Chapter 5 presents graduation rates and dropout rates.

Crafting Downtown Denton: An Exploration of Craft Beer Consumption as an Activity in Denton, Texas

Craft beer as a cultural phenomenon coincided with the revitalization of downtown Denton, Texas. Much of the existing literature on craft beer and its relation to place focuses on breweries rather than bars. This exploratory study aims to explain why people consume craft beer, what factors influenced its popularity in Denton despite little beer production, and to explore considerations for the promotion of Denton as a craft beer destination and making downtown an inclusive space. Data was collected through interviews, participant observation, and a survey. Findings indicated that craft beer consumption in Denton is largely related to perceptions of community, localism, and knowledge seeking. The ethos of the craft beer industry closely aligned with participants' perceptions of Denton as a city.

The Gainsay Taxonomies

Through painting, I use materiality to describe the material world. By rooting my practice in visual culture and art history, I seek to extend the meaning of images beyond their initial form. The coalescing of opposing and complimentary formal elements accentuate the visual and contextual friction. This allows the work to exist in an ambiguous state. Seen together, my works appear disparate, but they suggest alternative meanings through association with one another. The works can exist on their own, but engage in dialogue when juxtaposed against each other. Although about specific occurrences, the works afford the viewer their own interpretations.

Information Seeking Behaviors of Transitioning Veterans When Job Hunting in North Texas (open access)

Information Seeking Behaviors of Transitioning Veterans When Job Hunting in North Texas

This study explored a part of our population that can be misunderstood, marginalized, and underserved: veterans who are seeking to transition from the military to employment in North Texas. At the time of this research (before the COVID-19 pandemic), overall unemployment in North Texas was only 3.9%.Veteran unemployment was calculated at approximately the same before considering the underemployed veterans or those who have given up finding employment (and before the COVID-19 global pandemic), and that calculation likely exceeds 16-18% according to the Texas Workforce Commission. By understanding the information-seeking behaviors of the veteran population targeting North Texas for future employment, their ability to find useful information for successful relocation, attainment of employment, and the resources that enables their sense-making processes, the services provided to veterans seeking employment can be improved. Further understanding can be gained by using a qualitative approach that references Dervin's sense making model (SMM) as the framework. The revelations and conclusions can be used to improve existing programs, inspire new programs, and provide answers that are useful to the Veteran's Administration (VA), other veteran-focused organizations, policymakers, non-profits who serve veterans, veterans themselves, and future employers who enable successful transitions by providing satisfying and inclusive employment opportunities for …

Leveraging Geographical Disparities of Socio-Economic Factors to Predict Vulnerable Teenagers to Teen Birth: Chicago as A Case Study (open access)

Leveraging Geographical Disparities of Socio-Economic Factors to Predict Vulnerable Teenagers to Teen Birth: Chicago as A Case Study

Teen birth (TB) imposes serious health and economic burdens to both individuals and government. Various attempts have been made to overcome TB such as teen pregnancy prevention evidence-based programs. However, these programs might have declined teen birth rate (TBR), most of which do not address the influencing socio-economic factors linked to areas where teenagers live. This study is aimed at investigating socio-economic factors contributing to TB and identify their geographical disparities. The methodology was developed using the vulnerability theory to examine the complex relationship between TB and socio-economic factors. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) were employed to analyze census data. Findings suggest that socio-economically disadvantaged minorities, including unemployed black and uneducated Hispanic, are more vulnerable to TB. Additionally, geographic locations of communities where such teenager live are recognized. The outcomes verified the utility of the vulnerability theory to predict the geographical locations of vulnerable teens that can be leveraged by policymakers to allocate more health resources and perform place-specific interventions to effectively reduce TBR.
