Dido the Chaste: A Characterization of Dido in Spanish Baroque Pasticcio Opera

The Dido myth has evolved and been adapted by many cultures over the centuries. Each Dido was altered to fit the needs of its creator, their society and customs. Despite these variations, every Dido retelling is derived from the Virgilian Dido, historical Dido, or chaste Dido narrative, or a combination of these stories. The pasticcio opera, Ópera armónica al estilo italiano que se intitula Dido y Eneas draws on the general Virgilian plot but emphasizes the chaste Dido narrative. The changes in the plot of Dido y Eneas reflect societal gender norms, theatrical conventions, and historical figures, specifically Queen María Luisa Gabriela, from eighteenth-century Spain. The Dido of Dido y Eneas can be divided into two main personas: Dido the queen and Dido the lover. Her arias, which come from preexisting Italian operas, convey the dramatic text very well. However, no matter what persona Dido portrays, she never fully loses control nor lets her passions rule her actions. Even in the moments before her suicide, her aria, "Punta intrepida," lacks the overt emotionality found in the popular Dido lament made famous by Purcell. Advances to Convolutional Neural Network Architectures for Prediction and Classification with Applications in the First Dimensional Space

In the vast field of signal processing, machine learning is rapidly expanding its domain into all realms. As a constituent of this expansion, this thesis presents contributive work on advancements in machine learning algorithms by building on the shoulder of giants. The first chapter of this thesis contains enhancements to a CNN (convolutional neural network) for better classification of heartbeat arrhythmia. The network goes through a two stage development, the first being augmentations to the network and the second being the implementation of dropout. Chapter 2 involves the combination of CNN and LSTM (long short term memory) networks for the task of short-term energy use data regression. Exploiting the benefits of two of the most powerful neural networks, a unique, novel neural network is created to effectually predict future energy use. The final section concludes this work with directions for future works.

The Influence of Thomas Mann's "Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkühn as Told by a Friend" upon Alfred Schnittke's Compositional Style as seen through His "Fuga for Solo Violin" (1953)

Alfred Schnittke was a prolific and nuanced musical figure of the twentieth-century, contributing significantly to the fields of musical philosophy and composition. One of his most researched contributions, that bridges both disciplines, is his definition and implementation of the compositional technique, polystylism. His 1971 essay, "Polystylistic Tendencies in Modern Music," served as the first serious discussion of the term, providing a narrower definition, differentiating it from other techniques, and discussing its importance in the oeuvre of twentieth-century artists. Schnittke is also known for his fervent desire to overcome the gap between Ernstmusik (serious music) and Unterhaltung (music for entertainment). This lifelong pursuit, combined with polystylism, lead him to create an eclectic catalogue that championed the ideas it was pioneering. However, there is little research done on the 1947 literary work that served as a creative catalyst to all these ideas: Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus: The Life of German Composer Adrian Leverkühn as told by a Friend. In contrast to other telling's of the Faust legend, Mann's version features a composer-protagonist, Adrian Leverkühn, who sells his soul for twenty-four years of creative musical-genius. "Allegro de Concert," op. 46, by Frédéric Chopin: A Performance Guide

Frédéric Chopin produced a remarkable body of piano works. Even though most of his works are essential repertoire in piano literature, some of them remain less familiar. One such significant work is the Allegro de Concert in A major, op. 46, which was apparently intended to be the first movement of a third piano concerto. Despite the praise the work has received, it is rarely heard, and references to performance are lacking in the scholarly literature. Some reasons include the substantial technical challenges, such as risky skips, trills in double notes, thick harmonic textures, complex passagework, and the perpetual motion. This study provides a performance guide for the Allegro de Concert, looking at various perspectives of an informed musical performance. The historical backstory of the intended third concerto and a detailed form analysis demonstrate that the work has a combined form, incorporating elements of both concerto and sonata-allegro form. The chapter on performance presents the technical issues and a comparative analysis of various editions and arrangements of this work to inspire musical ideas and suggest appropriate solutions to the musical and technical difficulties.

Tibetan and Western Musical Elements in the Piano Suite "Tibetan Sketches" by Bingyuan Cui

As one of the few piano works with Tibetan folk characteristics, the piano suite Tibetan Sketches composed by Bingyuan Cui presents a vivid depiction of the Tibetan people with colorful sound and considerable imagination. As a Tibetan, I have been greatly honored to research and perform this work and incorporate my understanding into this dissertation. The composer took into account Western composition techniques as well as Eastern music, combining religious and folk musical elements of Chinese ethnic minorities with Western piano techniques to create a wonderful work. This dissertation introduces the characteristics of Tibetan music and analyzes the work, then explores the use of Tibetan elements and the varied styles in the three movements of Tibetan Sketches. Cui uses a large number of Tibetan elements in this work, closely related to the local Tibetan music style in melodies, decorations, harmonies, tone color changes, and performance techniques. Based on the historical background and influence of Western music on the development of Chinese music and some other aspects, a brief description is given of the Eastern and Western music styles in the work. String Playing for a Lifetime: Narratives of Two Adult Amateur String Players

The purpose of this study was to increase knowledge about the experiences of adult amateur string players. Through narrative inquiry, this study presents the unique stories of two amateur string players who have sustained their active music-making throughout their adult lives. Leaders in music education have promised lifelong music-making and touted it as a benefit of supporting music in schools. This promise is part of vision statements, symposia, advocacy efforts, and guiding documents for the last century. Yet, the most common outcome for students who participate in school music programs is that they quit before they graduate high school, or soon afterward. The idea of school music segueing into lifetime music-making for large numbers of students remains an aspiration and not the outcome. I used narrative inquiry to explore and present the stories of these two players. Their experiences are unique, and it is not appropriate to generalize their narratives to others. However, I hope that by closely examining the experiences they considered impactful in their lives as music students and amateur musicians, music educators can better understand the ways their teaching practices might lead to students' enjoyment of music-making past their student years. With Roger Malina, executive editor of Leonardo, the world's foremost academic journal for the intersections of art, science, and technology, providing a narrative overview of the subject, six art-scientists/science-artists discuss specific pieces of their artistic output to provide examples. As Roger Malina asserts, civilization is "going through an epistemological revolution as deep as the Copernican Revolution," and as we progress further into the 21st century, we will need hybrid professionals working in the arts and sciences to help humanity navigate through the age of big data.

Development of an Enclosed Evaporation Chamber Utilizing a Fresnel Lens Solar Concentrator

This thesis project investigates the configuration of an enclosed evaporation chamber with the intention of converting seawater into potable freshwater. The evaporation chamber's sole heat source is provided by a Fresnel lens, located above the chamber, which concentrates sunlight onto a 3-inch diameter focal plate built into the core of the chamber. The design of the evaporation chamber is modeled after a solar still and is coupled with a heat exchanger to boost efficiency of the system. The chamber was designed with the objectives of being portable, lightweight, low cost, corrosion resistant, interchangeable, and size convenient with the goal of producing 1 Liter of freshwater per hour of operation. The evaporation chamber consists of two primary components, a core and an attached arrangement of fins, all of which are heated via the Fresnel lens. A consistent intake of 2 grams/second of saltwater enters from the top of the chamber and is then gravity fed across the fins. Fin orientation has been designed to inhibit the flow rate of water within the chamber, maximizing the surface area of contact with the heated fins. Article detects the presence of a specific pancreatic cancer-derived miRNA (pre-miR-132) using the fluorescence properties of biocompatible nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) synthesized using a bottom-up approach from a single glucosamine precursor. This non-invasive approach allows cancer-specific miRNA detection to facilitate early diagnosis of various forms of cancer.

Article presents the large scale synthesis of solution-processed 2D (CH₃(CH₂)₃NH₃)₂(CH₃NH₃)ₙ − 1PbₙI₃ₙ + 1 (n = 2, 3, and 4) perovskites, a family of layered compounds with composition-tunable bandgap, where inkjet printing was used to fabricate heterostructure, flexible photodetector devices. The flexible, inkjet-printed perovskite 2D heterostructures have significant potential for optoelectronic devices, which can enable broad possibilities with compositional tunability and versatility of the organohalide perovskites.
