Hughes Reading Room established September 1996 to honor the leadership and works of Sarah Tilghman Hughes August 2, 1896 - April 23, 1985; 'It is the responsibility of every individual to measure up, to grow in concern for community, nation, and world, in order to assure any role whatever for individual freedom.' - Judge Hughes; As she believed, she lived. When elected in 1930, Sarah T. Hughes was the youngest woman to serve in the Texas House of Representatives. In 1935 she became the first woman to serve as a Texas District Judge. She was elected every four years until 1961, when she became the first woman justice of the United States District Court of North Texas and the second woman to serve as a District Judge in the United States. She was the only woman to give the oath of office to a President of the United States, swearing in Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963.
