We have developed a new multichannel detector for use in photoelectron spectroscopy (as well as other types of high-count-rate spectroscopy) that will operate at rates of up to 1 GHz. Such detectors are crucial to the full utilization of the high-brightness radiation generated by third-generation synchrotron radiation sources. In addition, new software and hardware has been developed to permit rapidly and accurately scanning photoelectron spectra that will be accumulated in as little as a 200 micros. A versatile next-generation sample goniometer permitting equally rapid scanning of specimen angles or photon energies for angle-resolved photoemission studies, photoelectron diffraction, and photoelectron holography measurements, and cooling to below 10K has also been designed and constructed. These capabilities have been incorporated into a unique photoelectron spectrometer/diffractometer at the Advanced Light Source of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; this experimental system includes ultrahigh energy resolution, in situ rotation, variable polarization, and optional spin detection. This overall system is now being used in studies of a variety of problems including magnetic metals and oxides; metal/metal, metal/metal oxide, and metal-oxide/metal-oxide multilayers; and systems exhibiting giant and colossal magnetoresistance.

Funeral program for Brother Horace S. Cook, born March 25, 1911 and died October 5, 2005. The funeral was held October 16, 2005 at Second Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Robert L. Jemerson. The funeral arrangements were made through Lewis Funeral Home and he was buried in Cedar Hills Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas.

To improve the understanding of passive film formation on metallic lithium in organic electrolyte, we synthesized and characterized lithium methyl carbonate (LiOCO{sub 2}CH{sub 3}), a prototypical component of the film. The chemical structure of this compound was characterized with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and its thermal stability and decomposition pathway was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The FTIR spectrum of chemically synthesized compound enabled us to resolve multiple products in the passive film on lithium in dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Lithium methyl carbonate is only one of the components, the others being lithium oxalate and lithium methoxide.

Video recording from The Black Academy of Arts and Letters recorded a performance of a musical revue given by the Cottonclub over the hits of the 1920s and 1930s during October of 2004. The footage shows the first half of the performance with hits such as "Stormy Weather", "You've Got the Right Key but the Wrong Keyhole", "Fat and Greasy", and Honky Tonk Town". The performers all wear costumes such as flapper dresses and suits.
