Use of Artificial Burrows by Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) at the HAMMER Facility on the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site

In 2003 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) constructed an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) at the Hazardous Material Management and Emergency Response Training and Education Center (HAMMER) in the southern portion of the Hanford Site. Preliminary surveys during 2001 identified an active burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) burrow and three burrowing owls within the proposed development area. Burrowing owls were classified as a federal species of concern, a Washington State ?candidate? species, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife priority species, and a Hanford Site Biological Resources Management Plan Level III resource. Therefore, the mitigation action plan for the project included the installation of twenty artificial burrows around EVOC in the spring of 2003. The mitigation plan established a success criterion of five percent annual use of the burrows by owls. In July 2005, a field survey of the EVOC burrow complex was conducted to determine use and demography at each site. Burrow locations were mapped and signs of activity (feces, owl tracks, castings, feathers) were recorded. Out of the twenty burrows, twelve were found to be active. Clearing Unexploded Ordnance: Bayesian Methodology for Assessing Success

The Department of Defense has many Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that are slated for transfer for public use. Some sites have unexploded ordnance (UXO) that must be cleared prior to any land transfers. Sites are characterized using geophysical sensing devices and locations are identified where possible UXO may be located. In practice, based on the analysis of the geophysical surveys, a dig list of N suspect locations is created for a site that is possibly contaminated with UXO. The suspect locations on the dig list are often assigned into K bins ranging from ``most likely to contain UXO" to ``least likely to be UXO" based on signal discrimination techniques and expert judgment. Usually all dig list locations are sampled to determine if UXO is present before the site is determined to be free of UXO. While this method is 100% certain to insure no UXO remains in the locations identified by the signal discrimination and expert judgment, it is very costly. This paper proposes a statistical Bayesian methodology that may result in digging less than 100% of the suspect locations to reach a pre-defined tolerable risk, where risk is defined in terms of a low probability that any UXO …

Large-Area Balloon-Borne Polarized Gamma Ray Observer (PoGO)

We are developing a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGO), to measure polarization of soft gamma rays (30-200 keV) using asymmetry in azimuth angle distribution of Compton scattering. PoGO is designed to detect 10% polarization in 100mCrab sources in a 6-8 hour observation and bring a new dimension to studies on gamma ray emission/transportation mechanism in pulsars, AGNs, black hole binaries, and neutron star surface. The concept is an adaptation to polarization measurements of well-type phoswich counter consisting of a fast plastic scintillator (the detection part), a slow plastic scintillator (the active collimator) and a BGO scintillator (the bottom anti-counter). PoGO consists of close-packed array of 217 hexagonal well-type phoswich counters and has a narrow field-of-view ({approx} 5 deg{sup 2}) to reduce possible source confusion. A prototype instrument has been tested in the polarized soft gamma-ray beams at Advanced Photon Source (ANL) and at Photon Factory (KEK). On the results, the polarization dependence of EGS4 has been validated and that of Geant4 has been corrected.

Advanced Monitoring to Improve Combustion Turbine/Combined Cycle Reliability, Availability & Maintainability

Power generators are concerned with the maintenance costs associated with the advanced turbines that they are purchasing. Since these machines do not have fully established Operation and Maintenance (O&M) track records, power generators face financial risk due to uncertain future maintenance costs. This risk is of particular concern, as the electricity industry transitions to a competitive business environment in which unexpected O&M costs cannot be passed through to consumers. These concerns have accelerated the need for intelligent software-based diagnostic systems that can monitor the health of a combustion turbine in real time and provide valuable information on the machine's performance to its owner/operators. EPRI, Impact Technologies, Boyce Engineering, and Progress Energy have teamed to develop a suite of intelligent software tools integrated with a diagnostic monitoring platform that, in real time, interpret data to assess the 'total health' of combustion turbines. The 'Combustion Turbine Health Management System' (CTHMS) will consist of a series of 'Dynamic Link Library' (DLL) programs residing on a diagnostic monitoring platform that accepts turbine health data from existing monitoring instrumentation. CTHMS interprets sensor and instrument outputs, correlates them to a machine's condition, provide interpretative analyses, project servicing intervals, and estimate remaining component life. Measurement of Branching Fractions and Resonance Contributions for B0 -> D0bar K+ pi- and Search for B0 -> D0 K+ pi- Decays

Using 226 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEp-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, they measure the branching fraction for B{sup 0} {yields} {bar D}{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, excluding B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup -}K{sup +}, to be {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {bar D}{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = 88 {+-} 15 {+-} 9 x 10{sup -6}. They observe B{sup 0} {yields} {bar D}{sup 0}K*(892){sup 0} and B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sub 2}(2460){sup -}K{sup +} contributions. The ratio of branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup -} K{sup +})/{Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup -}{pi}{sup +}) = (7.76 {+-} 0.34 {+-} 0.29)% is measured separately. The branching fraction for the suppressed mode B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup -} is {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) < 19 x 10{sup -6} at the 90% confidence level.

Measurement of the Inclusive Electron Spectrum in Charmless Semileptonic B Decays Near the Kinematic Endpoint and Determination of |Vub|

We present a measurement of the inclusive electron spectrum in B {yields} X{sub u}e{nu} decays near the kinematic limit for B {yields} X{sub c}e{nu} transitions, using a sample of 88 million B{bar B} pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. Partial branching fraction measurements are performed in five overlapping intervals of the electron momentum; for the interval of 2.0-2.6 GeV/c we obtain {Delta}{Beta}(B {yields} X{sub u}e{nu}) = (0.572 {+-} 0.041{sub stat} {+-} 0.065{sub syst}) x 10{sup -3}. Combining this result with shape function parameters extracted from BABAR measurements of moments of the inclusive photon spectrum in B {yields} X{sub s}{gamma} decays and moments of the hadron mass and lepton energy spectra in B {yields} X{sub c}l{nu} decays we determine |V{sub ub}| = 4.44 {+-} 0.25{sub exp{sub -0.38}{sup +0.42}SF} {+-} 0.22{sub theory} x 10{sup -3}. Here the first error represents the combined statistical and systematic experimental uncertainties of the partial branching fraction measurement, the second error refers to the uncertainty of the determination of the shape function parameters, and the third error is due to theoretical uncertainties in the QCD calculations.

Search for the Rare Decay B0bar -> D*0 gamma

We report on a search for the rare decay {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup 0}{gamma}, which in the standard model is dominated by W-exchange. The analysis is based on a data sample comprising 87.8 x 10{sup 6} B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. No significant signal is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction of 2.5 x 10{sup -5} at the 90% confidence level is obtained.

Performance Modeling: Understanding the Present and Predicting theFuture

We present an overview of current research in performance modeling, focusing on efforts underway in the Performance Evaluation Research Center (PERC). Using some new techniques, we are able to construct performance models that can be used to project the sustained performance of large-scale scientific programs on different systems, over a range of job and system sizes. Such models can be used by vendors in system designs, by computing centers in system acquisitions, and by application scientists to improve the performance of their codes.

Developing State Policies Supportive of Bioenergy Development Progress Report

Working within the context of the Southern States Biobased Alliance (SSBA) and with officials in each state, the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB) is identifying bioenergy-related policies and programs within each state to determine their impact on the development, deployment or use of bioenergy. In addition, SSEB will determine which policies have impacted industry's efforts to develop, deploy or use biobased technologies or products. As a result, SSEB will work with the Southern States Biobased Alliance to determine how policy changes might address any negative impacts or enhance positive impacts. In addition to analysis of domestic policies and programs, this project will include the development of a U.S.-Brazil Biodiesel Pilot Project. The purpose of this effort is to promote and facilitate the commercialization of biodiesel and bioenergy production and demand in Brazil.

Active Control for Statistically Stationary Turbulent PremixedFlame Simulations

The speed of propagation of a premixed turbulent flame correlates with the intensity of the turbulence encountered by the flame. One consequence of this property is that premixed flames in both laboratory experiments and practical combustors require some type of stabilization mechanism to prevent blow-off and flashback. The stabilization devices often introduce a level of geometric complexity that is prohibitive for detailed computational studies of turbulent flame dynamics. Furthermore, the stabilization introduces additional fluid mechanical complexity into the overall combustion process that can complicate the analysis of fundamental flame properties. To circumvent these difficulties we introduce a feedback control algorithm that allows us to computationally stabilize a turbulent premixed flame in a simple geometric configuration. For the simulations, we specify turbulent inflow conditions and dynamically adjust the integrated fueling rate to control the mean location of the flame in the domain. We outline the numerical procedure, and illustrate the behavior of the control algorithm on methane flames at various equivalence ratios in two dimensions. The simulation data are used to study the local variation in the speed of propagation due to flame surface curvature.
