4 MW upgrade to DIII-D FWCD system: System commissioning and initial operation (open access)

4 MW upgrade to DIII-D FWCD system: System commissioning and initial operation

The initial installation of the 4 MW fast wave current drive (FWCD) upgrade started in 1992 with the purchase of two ABB/Thomcast AG rf power amplifiers. These amplifiers cover the frequency range 30 MHz to 120 MHz. A maximum output power of over 2 MW between 30 MHz and 80 MHz and 1 MW at 120 MHz were the specification requirements. The system as installed is comprised of the two mentioned rf amplifiers, coaxial transmission and matching components, rf phase and amplitude monitoring, and a SUN SparcStation 10 control system. Due to various reasons almost every major component in the system required redesign and engineering in order to meet the system requirements. The failures, probable cause and the final redesigns will be discussed as well as some thoughts on how better to specify system requirements for future systems.

4 MW upgrade to the DIII-D fast wave current drive system

The DIII-D fast wave current drive (FWCD) system is being upgraded by an additional 4 MW in the 30 to 120 MHz frequency range. This capability adds to the existing 2 MW 30 to 60 MHz system. Two new ABB transmitters of the type that are in use on the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak in Garching will be used to drive two new water-cooled four-strap antennas to be installed in DIII-D in early 1994. The transmission and tuning system for each antenna will be similar to that now in use for the first 2 MW system on DIII-D, but with some significant improvements. One improvement consists of adding a decoupler element to counter the mutual coupling between the antenna straps which results in large imbalances in the power to a strap for the usual current drive intrastrap phasing of 90{degrees}. Another improvement is to utilize pressurized, ceramic-insulated transmission lines. The intrastrap phasing will again be controlled in pairs, with a pair of straps coupled in a resonant loop configuration, locking their phase difference at either 0 or 180{degrees}, depending upon the length of line installed. These resonant loops will incorporate a phase shifter so that they will be able to be tuned …

04 nuclear safety: pressure piping crack monitoring detection of metal overstress by acoustic emission. Progress report, July-September 1966 (open access)

04 nuclear safety: pressure piping crack monitoring detection of metal overstress by acoustic emission. Progress report, July-September 1966

The three main areas of effort have been: (1) definition of the general acoustic response pattern related to the gross aspects of forming and extending a crack in various materials, (2) development of a monitor system prototype concept exclusive of transducers and (3) development of a suitable, high temperature transducer. Tests using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens of various materials to establish conditions of crack formation and growth have indicated that material ductility is a major controlling factor in the acoustic response pattern. It appears to effect both acoustic emission intensity and the point in the crack formation-growth sequence at which the main emission occurs. A concept has been developed for the prototype of a full scale monitor system. Hardware development is being limited to the analyzer portion of the system at this time because it is the part most significant to demonstrating feasibility of the intended application. Signal level and signal rate are both being investigated as possible parameters for evaluating acoustic emission data. Of the various transducers for potential high temperature application, the capacitive or electrostatic transducer now looks most promising. A significant improvement in sensitivity has been achieved and a trial model used during recent tests produced …

4. pi. physics with the plastic ball

4 ..pi.. data taken with the Plastic Ball show that cluster production in relativistic nuclear collisions depends on both the size of the participant volume and the finite size of the cluster. The measurement of the degree of thermalization and the search for collective flow will permit the study of the applicability of macroscopic concepts such as temperature and density.

4-wave mixing for phase-matching free nonlinear optics in quantum cascade structures : LDRD 08-0346 final report. (open access)

4-wave mixing for phase-matching free nonlinear optics in quantum cascade structures : LDRD 08-0346 final report.

Optical nonlinearities and quantum coherences have the potential to enable efficient, high-temperature generation of coherent THz radiation. This LDRD proposal involves the exploration of the underlying physics using intersubband transitions in a quantum cascade structure. Success in the device physics aspect will give Sandia the state-of-the-art technology for high-temperature THz quantum cascade lasers. These lasers are useful for imaging and spectroscopy in medicine and national defense. Success may have other far-reaching consequences. Results from the in-depth study of coherences, dephasing and dynamics will eventually impact the fields of quantum computing, optical communication and cryptology, especially if we are successful in demonstrating entangled photons or slow light. An even farther reaching development is if we can show that the QC nanostructure, with its discrete atom-like intersubband resonances, can replace the atom in quantum optics experiments. Having such an 'artificial atom' will greatly improve flexibility and preciseness in experiments, thereby enhancing the discovery of new physics. This is because we will no longer be constrained by what natural can provide. Rather, one will be able to tailor transition energies and optical matrix elements to enhance the physics of interest. This report summarizes a 3-year LDRD program at Sandia National Laboratories exploring optical …

6 GeV light source project cost estimating procedure (open access)

6 GeV light source project cost estimating procedure

To maintain uniformity in estimating the cost requirements of the various components of the 6 GeV Light Source, the following procedure will be used by all the task groups. The procedure uses a Work Breakdown Structure (VBS) to break down the project into manageable, easy to estimate, components. The project is first broken down into major tasks or categories. Then each major division is continuously subdivided until the desired level of detail is achieved. This can be shown best by using the example of the WBS of the Aladdin Upgrade Project, excerpts of which are included in Appendix A.

7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Instrumentation Initiative. Conceptual Design Report (open access)

7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Instrumentation Initiative. Conceptual Design Report

In this APS Instrumentation Initiative, 2.5-m-long and 5-m-long insertion-device x-ray sources will be built on 9 straight sections of the APS storage ring, and an additional 9 bending-magnet sources will also be put in use. The front ends for these 18 x-ray sources will be built to contain and safeguard access to these bright x-ray beams. In addition, funds will be provided to build state-of-the-art insertion-device beamlines to meet scientific and technological research demands well into the next century. This new initiative will also include four user laboratory modules and a special laboratory designed to meet the x-ray imaging research needs of the users. The Conceptual Design Report (CDR) for the APS Instrumentation Initiative describes the scope of all the above technical and conventional construction and provides a detailed cost and schedule for these activities. According to these plans, this new initiative begins in FY 1994 and ends in FY 1998. The document also describes the preconstruction R & D plans for the Instrumentation Initiative activities and provides the cost estimates for the required R & D.

8:1 thermal cavity problem (open access)

8:1 thermal cavity problem

We present results for the 8:1 thermal cavity problem using FIDAP on 3 meshes--each using 3 elements. A brief summary of related results is also included. This contribution comes via the rather versatile and general commercial finite element code, FIDAP. This code still offers the user a wide selection with respect to element choices, statement of governing equations, (e.g., advective form, divergence form) implicit time integrators (variable-step or fixed step, first-order or second-order), and solution techniques for both the nonlinear and linear sets of equations. We have tested quite a number of these variations on this problem; here we report on an interesting subset and will present the remainder at the conference.

The 9/11 Commission and a National Counterterrorism Center: Issues and Options for Congress (open access)

The 9/11 Commission and a National Counterterrorism Center: Issues and Options for Congress

This report examines a number of issues as Congress considers codification of an NCTC. One issue is whether the centralization remedy the commission has recommended fits the problems associated specifically with the 9/11 intelligence failure, and perhaps more broadly, the systematic maladies affecting the Intelligence Community. There are at least four options for congressional consideration: (1) NCTC with intelligence and operational planning duties, (2) NCTC restricted to an intelligence role, (3) NCTC restricted to an operational planning role, and (4) status quo plus-viewing the newly forming collected entity as a pilot potential NCTC. As one of its 41 recommendations, the 9/11 Commission recommended the creation of a National Counterterroism Center (NCTC).
