Airborne Reconnaissance in the Valley of Fire-Muddy Mountains Region, Nevada (open access)

Airborne Reconnaissance in the Valley of Fire-Muddy Mountains Region, Nevada

Abstract: The Valley of Fire-Muddy Mountains region, located 20 to 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, was given approximately 25-percent airborne radioactive coverage during the fall of 1954. Rocks in the area range from Cambrian to Miocene in age. Uranium was known to occur at two sedimentary horizons at the time the airborne program began. One new uranium-bearing sedimentary horizon was discovered by the airborne reconnaissance. Of 15 anomolies detected, only 11 were posted as the remainder were claimed at the time of the survey.

An analysis of acceleration, airspeed, and gust-velocity data from a four-engine transport airplane in operations on an eastern United States route

Report presenting time-history data obtained by the NACA VGH recorder from a model of a four-engine civil transport airplane during operations on an eastern United States route in order to determine magnitude and frequency of occurrence of gusts, gust accelerations, and associated airspeeds. The results are compared with results from two similar operations. The gust-load history for the operation was more severe than that for the other two operations.

Analysis of the Horizontal-Tail Loads Measured in Flight on a Multiengine Jet Bomber

"The primary objectives of the present paper are to report the horizontal-tail-loads measurements for configuration B which have not previously been reported and to summarize the horizontal-tail-loads results obtained with both configurations. The manner in which the aerodynamic-loads data were analyzed to include structural temperature effects and fuselage flexibility effects constitutes an important part of the present paper" (p. 1).

Behavior of the Bell X-1A Research Airplane During Exploratory Flights at Mach Numbers Near 2.0 and at Extreme Altitudes (open access)

Behavior of the Bell X-1A Research Airplane During Exploratory Flights at Mach Numbers Near 2.0 and at Extreme Altitudes

Memorandum describing a flight program consisting of exploratory flights to determine the Mach number and altitude capabilities of the Bell X-1A research airplane. On two flights of X-1 airplane, one reaching a Mach number of about 2.44, the other a geometric altitude of about 90,000 feet, lateral stability difficulties were encountered which resulted in uncontrolled rolling motions of the airplane at Mach numbers near 2.0.

Carnotite Resources of San Miguel Bench, Montrose County, Colorado (open access)

Carnotite Resources of San Miguel Bench, Montrose County, Colorado

Abstract: San Miguel bench includes about 4 square miles in the southern part of T. 48 N., R. 17 W., New Mexico principal meridian, Montrose County, Colorado. Production of carnotite ore from the area has been about 15, 000 short tons having an estimated average graderof 0. 31 percent U3O8,and 1. 6 percent V2 05 Nearly all of the carnotite deposits occur in a single-continuous sandstone bed near the top of the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. These deposits consist chiefly of sandstone impregnated with uranium- and vanadium-bearing minerals. They are irregular tabular-shaped masses ranging in size from a few short tons to 30, 000 short tons or more of minable carnotite ore. During the period November 27, 1951, to April 17, 1953, the U. S. Geological Survey drilled 309 holes totaling 92, 194 feet on the San Miguel bench. Reserves total about 43, 000 short tons of material 1 foot or more thick and contain 0,.10 percent or more U30 or 1. 0 percent or more V205. Of these reserves 3, 300 short tons occur in private land. These reserves are in ten deposits found by Geological Survey drilling. Potential reserves (reserves based on geologic evidence …

Chemical Action of Halogenated Agents in Fire Extinguishing (open access)

Chemical Action of Halogenated Agents in Fire Extinguishing

From Summary: "The action of halogenated agents in preventing flame propagation in fuel-air mixtures in laboratory tests is discussed in terms of a possible chemical mechanism. The mechanism chosen is that of chain-breaking reactions between agent and active particles (hydrogen and oxygen atoms and hydroxyl radicsls). Data from the literature on the flammability peaks of n-heptane agent-air mixtures are treated. Ratings of agent effectiveness in terms of the fuel equivalent of the agent, based on both fuel and agent concentrations at the peak, are proposed as preferable to ratings in terms of agent concentration alone."

A Cloud Chamber Study of the Secondary Particles from Locally Produced Penetrating Showers (open access)

A Cloud Chamber Study of the Secondary Particles from Locally Produced Penetrating Showers

The present experiment was undertaken as an attempt to throw more light on the decay processes that had been observed prior to the summer of 1952, as well as to investigate any new decay processes that might manifest themselves. The source of high energy primary particles was to be the cosmic ray beam, so a detector of locally produced high energy penetration showers was used. In order to be able to detect effectively low energy photons and low energy secondaries from particles reaching the end of their range in the chamber, thin lead plates (1/4") were used in the chamber.

Contributions on the Mechanics of Boundary-Layer Transition

Note presenting an investigation of the manner in which flow in a boundary layer becomes turbulent on a flat plate at wind speeds generally below 100 feet per second. Hot-wire techniques were used and many of the results are derived from oscillograms of velocity fluctuations in the transition region.
