Altitude performance characteristics of the J47-25 turbojet engine: data presentation (open access)

Altitude performance characteristics of the J47-25 turbojet engine: data presentation

From Introduction: "An investigation was conducted in an NACA Lewis altitude chamber to determine the altitude performance characteristics of a J47-25 axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds number indices corresponding to altitudes from 18,000 to 54,000 feet and flight Mach numbers from 0.50 to 1.10. Reynolds number at a given corrected engine speed and is a function only of engine-inlet total pressure and temperature, was used instead of various set altitudes and flight Mach number combinations (reference 1). An example is included in the appendix to illustrate the method of obtaining conventional performance parameters for a given flight condition from the data such as presented herein."

Component and over-all performance evaluation of a J47-GE-25 turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds number indices

Report presenting an investigation in the altitude test chamber to evaluate the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds number indices. Secondary effects of exhaust-nozzle flow coefficient, air-flow leakage, and inlet temperature should be considered before analyzing the effect of variations in engine-inlet Reynolds number index. Several minor design modifications proposed by the manufacturer did not produce any measurable improvement in engine performance.

The Development of Equipment and Methods for Centrifugally Casting Reactor Fuel Slugs

This technical report describes the design and construction of equipment and the development of methods for multiple mold, centrifugal casting of reactor fuel slugs. Advantages of the centrifugal casting method over the conventional fabrication methods were found to be (1) fewer operations, (2) fewer and more easily recovered residues, (3) less expensive equipment, and (4) the production of fuel slugs in shapes and in alloys not well adapted to other methods of manufacture. The method consisted of vacuum melting the alloy in stoppered crucibles and bottom pouring into a spinning rotor carrying 16 radially arranged copper molds. The castings so produced were used without further processing, except for cropping the sprue end to obtain the specified length.

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of the experimentally determined characteristics of 18 cambered wings of rectangular plan form

The effects of one type of camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of rectangular wings at high subsonic and transonic speeds have been studied by applying the transonic similarity rules to the correlation of experimental data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63A2XX and 63A4XX sections, aspect ratios from 1 to 4, and thicknesses from 4 to 8 percent. The data were obtained by use of a transonic bump over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.1.

Results of a Power-on Flight of a 1/10-Scale Rocket-Propelled Model of the Convair XF2Y-1 Airplane at a Mach Number of 1.53

Report discussing testing on a scale model of the Convair XF2Y-1 airplane with solid-fuel rocket motors that simulate full-scale turbojet-engine characteristics at a height of 35,000 feet with full afterburning at Mach number 1.53. The model was found to have dynamic lateral instability, but these results were not likely to be found in a full-scale airplane. Information about the pitching moment, directional stability, lift-curve slope, and drag coefficients is provided.

Comparative Analysis of ANL High Purity Uranium (open access)

Comparative Analysis of ANL High Purity Uranium

In the course of the development at Argonne of high purity uranium metal in ingot form, some questions arose as to the validity of the chemical analyses of some of the impurities (particularly those for carbon, boron, and silicon), with one analytical laboratory reporting concentrations in some instances of an order of magnitude greater than another laboratory. Since the low concentrations of impurities in this material involved, in some cases, the development of modified analytical procedures and standards, it was decided to check these discrepancies by having identically prepared samples analyzed by several AEC and associated laboratories. This report is a compilation of the results obtained.
