The study reported herein was conducted in 1944 at the Waterways Experiment Station for the Bureau of Yards and Docks, U. S. Navy Department. Its purpose was to determine the best of several plans proposed for protecting the piers and dry docks at the Naval Operating Base, Terminal Island, San Pedro, California, from the effects of wave and surge action.

From abstract: "This study was made to describe the distribution of inorganic nitrogen and other chemical constituents and nitrogen-using bacteria in the unsaturated zone, to relate nitrogen occurrences, in a general way, to present and historical land use, and to attempt to predict nitrogen concentrations in ground water after recharge" within the Highland-East Highlands area of San Bernardino County, California. From introduction: Our particular interest in the uranium potential of the Proterozoic quartz-pebble and quartzite-pebble conglomerates of the Kingston Peak Formation has been based upon: 1. Known uranium occurrences of low to intermediate grade in a peliticarkosic sulfide-bearing unit near the base of the formation; the "Favorable Submember" of this report. 2. Uranium occurrences and widespread anomalies in underlying Proterozoic granitic-metamorphic rocks, including the World Beater Complex, within and bordering the basin in which the conglomerates were deposited. 3. Reported minor shows of uranium associated with extensive anomalous radioactivity in the conglomerates themselves.

From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Salton Sea 10 x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 997 sites. Ground water samples were collected at 76 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.
