IRES Track II - Cape Horn ASIs: Climate change and disease ecology at the southern end of the Americas

Data management plan for the grant "IRES Track II - Cape Horn ASIs: Climate change and disease ecology at the southern end of the Americas." Research giving students the opportunity to be trained in quantitative experimental design and work as part of a multinational research collaboration to study infectious disease emergence in one of the few remaining pristine places on Earth. The Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR) off the southern tip of South America protects pristine ecosystem is perfect for this type of graduate student training. The CHBR is part of the sub-Antarctic Magellanic ecoregion, which is globally significant because it houses the worlds southernmost forest biome, contains numerous endemic species, is remote, and is relatively free of anthropogenic impacts. The research questions themselves will be flexible, but organized thematically. Specifically, this IRES Track-II will focus on the merging molecular genetic analysis using a mobile next generation sequencing lab with mist netting and arthropod trapping to investigate the impacts of wildlife disease on local biodiversity and community structure. Secondarily, eDNA and traditional wildlife disease monitoring approaches will be applied to understand the potential for zoonosis and understanding ecological factors that contribute to, or inhibit, zoonosis. The proposed research in theoretical atomic physics involves few-body systems of charged particles, especially ones that involve the antiparticle of the electron, which is a positron. One of these systems is the positronium negative ion, which is comprised of two electrons and a positron. The exotic positronium atom is similar to the conventional hydrogen atom, but the positive charge in the atom is a positron rather than a proton. The proposed studies of these few-body charged systems will support international collaborations with scientists in the UK and Japan.

Research on CALPHAD simulations will be conducted to optimize the chemical composition of tungsten based alloys towards 3D printability while boosting mechanical performance through solid solution and dispersion strengthening. This will followed by powder prototyping to validate the simulation results experimentally and to finalize the chemical composition of interest. Process parameter optimization and post-process heat treatment design will help to achieve optimal low-to-high temperature mechanical properties. Mechanical testing and microstructural characterization will be performed to establish process-microstructure-property relationships.

This research team has developed a technique to measure gas turbulence in systems hosting giant central black holes and will directly evaluate the viability of this mechanism using a large sample of galaxies. This project will deliver a more complete view of the “feedback” provided by accreting SMBHs, leading to a better understanding of the black hole-host galaxy relation. More specifically, it will directly probe the energetics of the intra-cluster, circum-galactic, and interstellar media of massive early-type galaxies.

The Influence of Aortic Valve Hemodynamics and LVAD on bio-transport processes in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

Data management plan for the grant "The Influence of Aortic Valve Hemodynamics and LVAD on bio-transport processes in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease." One of the most common valvular heart diseases is the development of calcific aortic valve (CAV). The goal of this research is to understand the transport and near-wall accumulation of Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), which play a key role in the CAV development, with and without altered transvalvular pressure gradient due to LVADs. This will be achieved by developing the first computational model of biochemical transport near the highly deforming aortic valve, in which the hemodynamics and LDL mass transport are coupled with the biomechanical response of the valve, using a FSI framework formed around an innovative supreme immersed boundary (SIB) method.

The University of North Texas and the University of Alabama, in partnership with the Pottsboro Area Library and the Tuscaloosa Public Library, will develop a program called "Raise Up Radio: Family and Youth Engagement in Library Supported Learning Via Radio" to address educational inequities that became even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic and create a professional network of librarians who use radio broadcasts. Over two years, six libraries serving high-need rural communities in Texas and Alabama will each implement a total of four, five-week educational programs delivered over local radio stations. The program will leverage existing community resources to create accessible educational content through collaborative partnerships. It will connect libraries, museums, and educational institutions with students in rural communities through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. Local youth and families will develop these new radio programs using best practices for equitable youth and family engagement in learning. Ultrawideband Near-Field Probe System for Antenna Research

The objective of this project is to acquire an ultrawideband near-field probe system to build a highly capable antenna measurement facility which will provide critical support for the research, development, and testing of new antenna designs and concepts at the University of North Texas (UNT). The requested near-field probe system will be integrated with existing hardware at UNT, including a vector network analyzer and an Albatross Projects shielded chamber, to complete the build for the measurement system that is capable of characterizing three-dimensional radiation patterns of antennas-under-test (AUT) over a wide frequency range of 0.65-18 GHz. The measurement facility will be used to not only support ongoing and future federally funded research of the principal investigators but also enhance undergraduate and graduate education and training in RF, microwave, and antenna engineering at UNT.
