Car Coupling.

Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "is to provide a cheap, durable, and simple car-coupling, which shall be automatic and positive in its action, and which uses the ordinary link and takes the draft in the same way as the common pin, and which will also fit any car, and will not get out of order from being battered. It consists, mainly, in the peculiar construction of a coupling device, in combination with a spring for holding it to the open or closed position, and co-operating with the same for automatic action" (lines 11-22).

Patent for a new and improved planter. This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the main frame . . . provided with the hopper, covers, and transporting-wheel, of the vibrating-lever pivoted at its lower end to the side of the frame, and pivoted at its middle to the lateral arm, secured to the feed-slide and operated by means of the pitman, which is connected at its lower end to the crank-axle, the upper end thereof being pivoted to the upper end of the lever" (lines 17-26).

Car-Replacer.

Patent for improvements in car-replacers by using a jack-screw with a swiveled rest secured on top. The swiveled rest consists of an oblong box having rollers projecting above its upper edge. A windlass with a rope is journeyed in the jack-screw, passing through the swiveled rest, over a pulley and out of one end of the rest; the rope end having a hook or other suitable means for connecting it with the car. When the windlass is turned, “the car-body is moved laterally upon the rollers until the car-wheels are in line with the track.” (Lines 46-47) Illustration is included.

Tire-Heater.

Patent for improvements in tire-heater by using a tire box with a number of horizontal bars, tires are placed “into the front of the box and moved into correct position upon the horizontal bars without necessarily lifting the tires.” (Lines 29-32) Diverging arms are secured to the axis inside the tire box. Lamps are secured at the outer ends of the diverging arms. These diverging arms operate by a regulating crank which makes the lamps revolved beneath the tires, therefore heating the tires. Illustration is included.
