An Influence Function for the Beta Activity of Uranium(235) Fission Products (open access)

An Influence Function for the Beta Activity of Uranium(235) Fission Products

Abstract: "Computations have been made of the total beta activity of the fission products arising from the slow neutron fission of U-235. A curve is given exhibiting the activity the activity per unit fission, for time intervals after fission ranging from 0.01 second to 10 years. This influence function is compared with some published experimental data and with the statistical curve of Way and Wigner. A curve facilitates estimation of the activity in the particular case where the fission rate has been constant throughout a known time interval. Finally, an influence function for the particular group of fission products consisting of complete and partial chains having volatile first members is given. This report is based on studies conducted for the Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT-11-1-GEN-8."

The Regnault Method as Applied to Tritium Purity Determinations (open access)

The Regnault Method as Applied to Tritium Purity Determinations

Summary: The Regnault Method as applied to tritium purity determinations is described. The operating difficulties, such as temperature and humidity changes, static charges, excessive vibrations, contamination with air and helium, etc., and the methods currently in use for minimizing such difficulties, are discussed. A discussion of ion-chamber calibrations, and the correlation of ion-chamber results with Regnault Method results, are included. A precision of ±1% has been obtained, but the accuracy is not yet known.

Estimated Manufacturing Costs for the Recovery of Thorium and Uranium from Monazite Sand (open access)

Estimated Manufacturing Costs for the Recovery of Thorium and Uranium from Monazite Sand

Abstract: "Costs have been estimated for the production of uranium and pure thorium from monasite concentrates by a process involving (1) reaction of monasite with caustic soda, (2) dissolution of the hydrous oxides in hydrochloric acid, (3) separation from the bulk of the rare earths by hydroxide precipitation of thorium and uranium, and (4) purification by solvent extraction."

Final Report on Recovery of Thorium and Uranium From Monazite Sand : Volume 1 (open access)

Final Report on Recovery of Thorium and Uranium From Monazite Sand : Volume 1

Report describing a method for recovery of high yields of thorium and uranium from monazite sand concentrates. Monazite is decomposed into hydrous metal oxides, which are dissolved in an acid. The solution is then separated into a precipitate, which seperates from thorium and uranium. An alternate separation method is evaluated.

Some Theoretical Problems Concerning Paramagnetic Substances at Low Temperature (open access)

Some Theoretical Problems Concerning Paramagnetic Substances at Low Temperature

Technical report discussing six problems in paramagnetic substances at low temperatures: 1) The Kramers degeneracy; 2) The quenching of orbital motion; 3) Curie constants of CuSO4∙5H2O; 4) Super exchange in CuSO4∙5H2O; 5) The specific heat of CuSO4∙5H2O; and 6) Nuclear interactions of paramagnetic ions. The discussion of these problems brings to light the general principles involved and the general principles can then help understanding of many low temperature phenomena in the paramagnetic salts.

A Design for a Rotary Reactivity Control for a Test Reactor

Tests made on the Oy-Tu reacting assembly at Pajarito indicate that the lateral displacement of two halves of the active material within the assembly can be used as a control mechanism on this type of reacting assembly. This report describes a reacting assembly using a rotary control mechanism based on this principle and indicates the sensitivity of control possible with such a device.
