Remote mechanical operating methods vs rubber glove operating methods for the 234-5 process (open access)

Remote mechanical operating methods vs rubber glove operating methods for the 234-5 process

The present RMA Line has now progressed through the run-in period and is engaged in actual production. Considerable new data and experiences are available for use in an evaluation of the basis used for design of the equipment in regard to contamination control and the safety of operating and maintenance personnel. Research and development funds have been allocated to the improvement of the 234-5 process equipment. Thus it is desirable that an up-to-date basis be established for use as criteria for the design development of these improvements. It is concluded that remote control operation of all plutonium purification and fabrication equipment is ultimately desirable. However, until reliable, tested, remote-control equipment is available, the remote control requirement may have to be compromised on some steps of the process to allow non-remote or rubber glove operation in order to obtain equipment with sufficient operating reliability.

The effects of water quality on pile operation (open access)

The effects of water quality on pile operation

Tests have been made to study the effects of lowering process water pH from pH 7.7 to the range pH 6.2--7.3; of reducing the amount of sodium dichromate inhibitor added to the water; and of eliminating the filtration step in the water treatment process. The results on the pH testing showed that reducing the pH of the cooling water would reduce aluminum corrosion rates. The plant specification has been changed to lower process water pH from 7.7 to 7.3 and plant scale testing of pH 7.0 water is in progress. Reducing the dichromate concentration in the water from 2 to 0.2 ppm had no deleterious effects on the aluminium pile components but might cause pitting of the carbon steel pile effluent lines. The use of unfiltered water is technically feasible from the stand-points of corrosion and film formation but probably would cause a sizable increase in the radioactivity of the pile effluent water. 6 figs., 5 tabs.

Efficiency of Scavenging Devices in Determining Falloug. Progress Report No. 6 March 15 to July 31, 1957

A fall-out sample collector was designed and tested for use in collecting samples at the soil surface. The sampler consists of artificial grass and a stainless steel pot. Results are included from preliminary studies on the scavenging properties of artificial grass. The effects of relative humidity, rain, and wind velocity on the efficiency of scavenging devices were investigated. A comparison was made of Sr/sup 90/ fall-out data from samples collected on gummed film and surface soil samples from various locations. Preliminary experiments were performed for the evaluation of devices used in determining air concentration of radioactive fall-out or other particulate matter. (For preceding period see AECU-3435.) DR Gas Loop test No. 1 limitations

In accordance with the agreement in a meeting with Aerojet-General Nucleonics representatives, certain information is presented for use in planning the first DR Gas Loop test run. Included are the following: estimates of test section power prediction uncertainty and variation during run; estimates of limiting test section design powers and {Delta}P`s, presented as variables versus maximum loop flow as a parameter; spatial relation between in-pile tube and reactor surroundings; and a representative relative flux traverse in the sample space. The user of this information is cautioned to study the discussion to fully understand the significance of what is presented.

ENERGY RECEPTION AND TRANSFER IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS (open access)

ENERGY RECEPTION AND TRANSFER IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS

The basic information about the path of carbon in photosynthesis is reviewed together with the methods that were used to discover it. This has led to the knowledge of what is required of the photochemical reaction in the form of chemical species. Attention is then directed to the structure of the photochemical apparatus itself insofar as it is viewable by electron microscopy, and some principoles of ordered structure are devised for the types of molecules to be found in the chloroplasts. From the combination of these, a structure for the grana lamella is suggested and a mode of function proposed. Experimental test for this mode of function is underway; one method is to examine photoproduced unpaired electrons. This is discussed.

Proposal for irradiation of uranium swelling behavior capsules (open access)

Proposal for irradiation of uranium swelling behavior capsules

The swelling behavior of unalloyed clad uranium operating with a cladding surface temperature of 250--350 C and fuel temperatures from 450--750 C is of importance for Hanford`s fuel element development work. To obtain information on the effect of cladding restraint, exposure, and the above temperatures, on uranium swelling rates, a series of experiments is proposed for irradiation in Hanford reactors. The experimental assemblies consist of uranium fuel rods supported concentrically in an aluminum capsule. Surrounding the fuel rod is an annulus of liquid NaK to serve as a heat transfer agent.

Summary of Progress on the Study of Beta Treatment of Uranium, November 1, 1959-August 31, 1960 (open access)

Summary of Progress on the Study of Beta Treatment of Uranium, November 1, 1959-August 31, 1960

Variables affecting the texture and grain size of uranium during beta treatment are summarized. The study of the effect of time and temperature in the beta phase on the growth index (G3) and grain size of the final alpha product is tentatively believed to show that higher beta temperatures for short times (up to about seven minutes) tend to promote slightly more negative growth indices and that higher beta temperatures give rise to somewhat finer grain sizes. Results of studies of both Jominy end-quenched bars and several full-sized rods and tubes quenched by total immersion showed that large thermal gradients promoted negative growth indices and produced grains somewhat elongated in the direction of the thermal gradient. The effects of endcooling in full-sized pieces quenched by total immersion in cold water showed that the axial growth index is negative up to distances from the end of about half the wall thickness of tubes and about half the radial dimension of rods. The grain refinement penetrates to a lesser distance from the ends. In the radial direction the growth index for these same pieces is largely negative to a distance below the outer diameter of about midwall in two tubes studied. In …

The Effect of Cl$sup -$ and So$sub 4$$sup -2$ on the Paramagnetic Resonance Line Width of Mn$sup +2$ in Aqueous Solution and the Rates of Formation of the Complex Ions

The line width of one of the hynerfine components in solutions of Mn(ClO/ sub 4/)/sub 2/ containing added NaCl and Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ was studied from 20 to 200 deg C at 9000 Mc/sec. The chloride ion contributes littie broadening at 0.1 M below 80 deg C but considerable broadening is obtained above this temperature. The sulfate contributes broadening at all temperatures. The rates of formation of inner-sphere'' and outersphere'' complexes are discussed together with their rates of relaxation. At the lower temperatures the outersphere'' complexes primarily contribute to the broadening while at the higher temperatures the inner-sphere'' complexes also contribute. From the broadening above 80%DEC the rates of formation of the inner-sphere'' complexes are evaluated. (auth)

Tables of Classical Scattering Integrals for the Bohr, Born-Mayer, and Thomas-Fermi Potentials

Values of the distance of closest approach, the centerof-mass scattering angle, and the time integral are tabulated as functions of the impact parameter and the relative kinetic energy for each of three repulsive potentials. The classical theory of scattering was used as the basis for the calculations. The potentials used are the Born-Mayer (exponential), the Bohr (exponentially screened Coulomb), and the Thomas-Fermi.
