This newsletter informs about North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts members Nancy Cason, Project Coordinator, and colleague Cassandra Broadus, graduate research assistant, presented "discipline-based art education" or DBAE, at a pre-kindergarten - sixth grade teacher education workshop. Co-directors, Jack Davis and Bill McCarter were presenters at Arts Education Initiative Training Institutes conducted by the Texas Commission on the Arts in San Antonio and Houston.

The purpose of the program is to provide financial assistance for preservice and inservice training for personnel participating in or preparing to participate in bilingual vocation education. The document goes into great details about the application and instructions for building a budget summary. These pages belonged to the desk of Jack Davis, William McCarter and the members of the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, as they researched foundations and charities to support their education reform program.

In Connecticut, Moving Past Pencil and Paper

A newsletter, Education Week, Editorial Project in Education, Vol. 9, No. 1. "In Connecticut, Moving Past Pencil and Paper, Teachers Evaluated On Class Behavior." Fifty-five educators were learning a new language of assessment, and the new assessments for teachers and students were pioneered in Connecticut. Connecticut introduces what is said to be the nation's most rigorous assessment of entry-level teachers. The assessment will be administered, six times a year, to new teachers. The implementation is a new form of measuring how teachers perform the complex tasks of their profession.

Stating their disappointment for the schedule conflict that prevents him from being able to participate in NTIEVA, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, 1993 Summer Institute Administrator's Day. As such they are inviting Woolery to participate in an Administrator's Day for Dallas I.S.D. at the Meadows Museum at SMU and then the new wing of the Dallas Museum of Art. Their primary goal is to introduce NTIEVA to the new directors of the museum and introduce them to the DISD administrators. McCarter, Davis and Reynolds would like Woolery to present a greeting during the introductions of the day, and are having Janice Wiggins working with his secretary to schedule a day for this event in allowance of other key administrators to attend.

Reviewing how successful the 1991 Summer Institute was and how the implementation of the discipline-based art education is off to a good start. McCarter and Davis continue to say that they are already beginning preparations for the 1992 Summer Institute as they have a report due to the Getty Center for Education in the Arts mid-October to discuss a preliminary plan and budget. Consequently they need materials from Edwards by October 15, 1991 in order to insure continuation of a third year funding from the Getty Center. Included in the letter is a list of materials needed from Edwards, and finalizing points about how the Summer Institute will work.

The six teams of teachers from HEB elementary schools worked hard during the two weeks and received many hours of intensive preparation in the DBAE program. In order for the Getty Institute to continue their grant to NTIEVA, McCarter and Davis write that they need materials from Caloss that they've written out in details through the rest of the letter. Enclosed with the letter, is a draft of a letter McCarter and Davis need from Caloss, to modify to suit his style.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason, NTIEVA to Beverly Fletcher, Art Supervisor, Fort Worth ISD., in regards to how well the school year has gotten off to, and despite the budgetary limitations, teachers and art specialists have already reported success and enthusiasm working together and the improvement of the children. McCarter and Cason would like to remind Fletcher of upcoming "renewal" sessions for the 1990 and 1991 Institute participants and other art specialists belong to the district. The first event will be held October 19th, at the UNT Art Department to discuss practical ideas on talking with kids about art and ways of introducing art history to children, however, they will be unable to pay the teachers to attend these renewal sessions but a lunch will be provided.

NTIEVA has already begun to plan for the 1992 summer institute and need some materials from the district by October 15, in order to insure the continuation of funding from the Getty Center. Incidentally the second page of the letter is to Ronald Caloss, from September 20, 1991. The second page finishes the letter from the first.
