Results regarding the propeller characteristics, drag and cowling-air flow with the propeller removed, the effect of propeller on flow through cowling, and the influence of cooling requirements on airplane performance are provided.

Report presenting tests made in the 4- by 6-foot vertical wind tunnel of an NACA 0009 airfoil with a 30-percent-chord flap with a medium amount of aerodynamic overhanging balance. In this investigation, the effects of the shape of the flap-nose overhang and the gap at the nose of the flap have been determined. The results indicate that, generally, the lift effectiveness of the aerodynamically balanced flap was increased slightly over that of a plain flap when a blunt or medium flap nose was used on the balanced flap.

From Summary: "Tests on the B-34 fin-rudder-tab assembly were performed in the NACA 8-foot high-speed tunnel. Two cases of tab flutter were studied. It was shown conclusively that the frequency of the original or heavy tab was too low and caused coupling with one of the lower bending frequencies. A general conclusion was made that the tab frequency should be considerably higher than the lower modes of the fin-rudder assembly because there is generally a weaker coupling between the tab and the higher mode responses."

The results are presented as curves of the lift and drag coefficients plotted against speed for various angles of attack and depths for which the hydrofoils were tested.

An Investigation of Hydrofoils in the NACA Tank 1: Effect of Dihedral and Depth of Submersion

Tests were conducted on hydrofoil assemblies approximating an arrangement for use under seaplanes or surface boats. A series of hydrofoils, each supported by two struts, was towed at various depths ranging from partial submersions to a depth of 5-chord lengths. At depths greater than 4 or 5 chords, the influence of the surface of the water is small; hydrofoils operating at low speed will have characteristics similar to those of airfoils of the same section.

The analysis was based on the assumption that the controls were moved with a rapidity and amplitude equal to that measured with a fighter airplane in simulated combat. A corollary purpose consisted in determining the effect on reducing booster-power unit size of incorporating an energy accumulator in the booster system" (p. 1).

From Summary: "Tests were made of an 0.309-chord double-slotted flap on an NACA 65, 3-118, a equals 1.0 airfoil section to determine drag, lift, and pitching-moment characteristics for a range of flap deflections. Results indicate that combination of a low-drag airfoil and a double-slotted flap, of which the two parts moved as a single unit, gave higher maximum lift coefficients than have been obtained with plain, split, or slotted flaps on low-drag airfoils. Pitching moments were comparable to those obtained with other high-lift devices on conventional airfoils for similar lift coefficients."

"Two methods are presented for determining the horizontal location of the stick-fixed neutral point from wind-tunnel data. One method involves the solution of a mathematical equation; whereas the other method is a graphical solution for the same mathematical equation. The combined horizontal and vertical variation of the neutral point completely describes the stick-fixed longitudinal stability of airplanes that have large allowable center-of-gravity shifts" (p. 1).
