On the Use of Residue Theory for Treating the Subsonic Flow of a Compressible Fluid

"A new mathematical technique, due to Milne-Thomson, is used to obtain an improved form of the method of Poggi for calculating the effect of compressibility on the subsonic flow past an obstacle. By means of this new method, the difficult surface integrals of the original Poggi method can be replaced by line integrals. These line integrals are then solved by the use of residue theory. In this way an equation is obtained giving the second-order effect of compressibility on the velocity of the fluid" (p. 39).

Report presenting an investigation of the pressure distribution over a wing with the leading-edge swept back 47.5 degrees and with symmetrical circular-arc airfoil sections in the full-scale tunnel at a designated Mach and Reynolds number. The investigation included measurements of the surface static pressures along the chord for six spanwise stations, for a large angle-of-attack range, and for several angles of yaw.

An analytical method for evaluating factors affecting application of transpiration cooling to gas turbine blades

From Introduction: "A survey of some of the advantages and problems associated with transpiration cooling of gas-turbine engines is given in reference 1, and its is shown therein that high pressure gradients around the periphery of gas-turbine blades require that the blade wall permeability be varied around the blade periphery in order for uniform cooling to be obtained over the entire blade surface. This fact is verified in experimental investigations of transpiration-cooled turbine blades mounted in a static cascade (references 2 and 3) where it is shown that although transpiration cooling results in extremely effective cooling in the midchord region of the blade, there are very large variations in the chordwise temperature distribution because of improper permeability variation."

Dependence of Positive Pion Production Cross Sections on Atomic Number at Low Energies

A preliminary study of positive pion production from proton-nucleus collisions revealed that positive pion production cross sections agree more favorably with a Z 2/3 variation than with a variation proportional to the atomic number. A similar study on negative pion production has shown that negative pion yields from proton-nucleus collisions tend to vary in proportion to the number of neutrons in the nucleus. As a result an experiment was performed to investigate if there is a significant change in positive pion production with changing atomic number at two lower pion energies.

Flight Determination of Drag of Normal-Shock Nose Inlets With Various Cowling Profiles at Mach Numbers From 0.9 to 1.5

External-drag data are presented for normal-shock nose inlets with NACA 1-series, parabolic, and conic cowling profiles. The tests were made at an angle of attack of 0 degrees by using rocket-propelled models in free flight at Mach numbers from 0.9 to 1.5. The Reynolds number based on body maximum diameter varied from 2.5 x 10 sup 6 to 5.5 x 10 sup 6.

Report presenting an investigation of the stress distribution in the roots of the first three stages of the J6S axial-flow compressor in order to explain root failures experienced in service. Root failures were producible in the lab when high vibratory stresses were combined with simulated centrifugal loads. Results regarding fatigue tests on the original J6S blade roots and on two redesigned blade roots as well as a comparison of the different root designs are provided.

The Coulometric Titration of Plutonium

This work was performed to develop a general chemical method for the determination of small amounts of plutonium in solution. The work showed that a coulometric titration based on the preliminary oxidation of the plutonium to Pu (VI) followed by titration with electrolytically-generated ferrous ion to Pu (IV) was such a general method and was subject to few interferences. The significance of the work is that a chemical determination of plutonium can be made for amounts of plutonium heretofore determined only by radioassay methods, and the chemical determination of larger amounts are made more readily and with higher precision than with previous methods. The work also extends the application of coulometric titration methods to a new substance.

Investigation of the compressive strength and creep lifetime of 2024-T3 aluminum-alloy plates at elevated temperatures

The results of elevated-temperature compressive strength and creep tests of 2024-t3 (formerly 24s-t3) aluminum alloy plates supported in v-grooves are presented. The strength-test results indicate that a relation previously developed for predicting plate compressive strength for plates of all materials at room temperature is also satisfactory for determining elevated-temperature strength. Creep-lifetime results are presented for plates in the form of master creep-lifetime curves by using a time-temperature parameter that is convenient for summarizing tensile creep-rupture data. A comparison is made between tensile and compressive creep lifetime for the plates and a method that made use of isochronous stress-strain curves for predicting plate-creep failure stresses is investigated.
