Unravelling the Influence of Surface Modification on the Ultimate Performance of Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites

Article asserts that the overall performance of polymer composites depends on not only the intrinsic properties of the polymer matrix and inorganic filler but also the quality of interfacial adhesion. The authors report carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy composites with improved interfacial adhesion by covalent bonding between CFs and the epoxy matrix, which leads to the improved ultimate mechanical properties and enhanced thermal aging performance.

Preparation and Characterization of 3D Printed PLA-Based Conductive Composites Using Carbonaceous Fillers by Masterbatch Melting Method (open access)

Preparation and Characterization of 3D Printed PLA-Based Conductive Composites Using Carbonaceous Fillers by Masterbatch Melting Method

This article highlights a study aimed at improving the conductivity of polylactic acid (PLA)-based composites by incorporating carbonaceous fillers. The composites with the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (rGO) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated by the masterbatch melting method in order to improve the dispersion of the two kinds of nano-fillers. The results showed that, with the addition of 9 wt % rGO, the volume electrical resistivity of the composite reached the minimum electrical resistance of 10³ Ω·m, at which point the conductive network in the composites was completely formed.

Biocompatible, large-format, inkjet printed heterostructure molybdenum disulfide-graphene photodetectors on conformable substrates (open access)

Biocompatible, large-format, inkjet printed heterostructure molybdenum disulfide-graphene photodetectors on conformable substrates

This article describes an inkjet printed, biocompatible, heterostructure photodetector that was constructed using inks of photo-active molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and electrically conducting graphene which facilitated charge collection of the photocarriers. The importance of such devices stems from their potential utility in age-related-macular degeneration, which is a condition where the photosensitive retinal tissue degrades with aging, eventually compromising vision. The absence of effective therapeutic remedies for patients with this disorder has motivated the development of such devices to restore some degree of visual function.

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated viaAu andAg electrodes (open access)

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated viaAu andAg electrodes

Article states that perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly based on the methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) formulation, have been of intense interest for the past decade within the photovoltaics (PV) community, but their long-term stability under operational conditions and environmental storage are still prime challenges to be overcome towards their commercialization. The authors have conducted a comprehensive analysis on the impact of the electrode collector layer, specifically Ag and Au, on the degradation mechanism associated with the MAPbI3 and a triple cation absorber. The authors hypothesize the mechanism of degradation, arising from the Ag interaction with the absorber through the formation of AgI in the PSCs, leads to corrosion of the perovskite absorber, as opposed to the benign AuI when Au electrodes are used in the solar cell stack.
