The Neutralization of the Figure Within a Controlled Environment (open access)

The Neutralization of the Figure Within a Controlled Environment

The questions I have addressed in regard to neutralization were as follows: 1. How important was the figure to the environment? 2. How far could the figure's physical presence be reduced and still contribute to the concepts of the painting? 3. How vividly was the figure presented while still complying with the requirements to meet neutralization? 4. Did color and texture aid in neutralizing the figure, and, if so, how? 5. Did the scale of the paintings have any effect on the neutralization process?

Adding and Subtracting Color in the Painting and Serigraphic Processes: A Development of Consistency in Two Art Media (open access)

Adding and Subtracting Color in the Painting and Serigraphic Processes: A Development of Consistency in Two Art Media

This is a method in which designs as a whole are not pre-planned or pre-arranged, but are developed by applying layers of color. This is an additive method for obvious reasons, and it is subtractive because shapes can be covered with opaque paint or very intense stain. Transparent layers of color applied over existing colors cause hue changes, and the process creates subtleties resulting from one color showing through another.

Empowering the Black Community Faith-Based Economic Development (open access)

Empowering the Black Community Faith-Based Economic Development

This paper is addressed to the inner city and some suburban congregations seeking to express their faith through practical initiatives to revitalize their distressed communities. The paper seeks to inspire and instruct the reader with motivational stories containing illustrations of the valuable role that African-American congregations have played in stimulating economic development in their communities. The paper also shows the importance of African-Americans having some control over the flow of economic funds throughout the community. African-American churches in the inner city should undertake significant ventures in community economic development to minister to the temporal as well as the spiritual needs of their communities. This paper will demonstrate how the African-American church, with assistance from federal, state, local programs, and private concerns, can be effective in the urban revitalization.

Spontaneous Imagery Within Shaped Formats (open access)

Spontaneous Imagery Within Shaped Formats

The primary concerns and problems which were addressed in this project were: 1. were the shaped formats more of less effective when derived directly from maps and/or photographic panoramas as opposed to deriving them from my own memory and imagination? 2.Was the negative space in which the intaglio prints float, more or less effective than the paintings and drawings which have no bordering negative space? 3. What differences exist in the spontaneous imagery when putting down the initial marks, with my eyes closed, as opposed to when my eyes were open. 4. Did values painted, drawn, or printed over the spontaneous imagery expand the spacial implications and enhance the overall coordination? 5. What problems arose in construction of the shaped formats, how they were solved, and what was the best way to finish the edges for presentation?

Photoelectric Emission Measurements for CVD Grown Polycrystalline Diamond Films (open access)

Photoelectric Emission Measurements for CVD Grown Polycrystalline Diamond Films

We examined CVD grown polycrystalline diamond films having different methane concentrations to detect defects and study the possible correlation between the methane concentration used during the growth process and the defect density. SEM and Raman results show that the amorphous and sp2 carbon content of the films increases with methane concentration. Furthermore, photoelectric emission from diamond is confirmed to be a two-photon process, hence the electrons are emitted from normally unoccupied states. We found that the photoelectric yield, for our samples, decreases with the increase in methane concentration. This trend can be accounted for in two different ways: either the types of defects observed in this experiment decrease in density as the methane concentration increases; or, the defect density stays the same or increases, but the increase in methane concentration leads to an increase in the electron affinity, which reduces the overall photoelectric yield.

Low-Temperature Sodium Vapor Firing: A Study of Alternative Sources for Sodium (open access)

Low-Temperature Sodium Vapor Firing: A Study of Alternative Sources for Sodium

As much as I like the effects of low-fire salting, I hesitate to use salt. The hydrochloric acid released into the environment during the salting process creates a dense fog that is not only toxic, but visually offensive as well. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find a source of sodium that would achieve aesthetic results as equally exciting as the effects of salt.

Microfarms (open access)

Microfarms

This study describes the role of rural women and their importance in the success of microfarm projects. Microfarm cultivators can increase their income levels through trade of agricultural products. By adopting self-sustaining methods, the cultivator saves money and does not need to rely as much on goods and services from outside resources to increase food production efficiencies in microfarms. This goal can be reached in part through careful planning and construction of the microfarm facility. In addition, in developing phases of the microfarm, the external resources may possibly be a mechanism to increase expansion and knowledge. Microfarms are an important option for the third world countries and poor people worldwide.

The Use of Horizontal, Vertical, and Contour Lamination to the Sculptural Form (open access)

The Use of Horizontal, Vertical, and Contour Lamination to the Sculptural Form

The purpose of this problem was to investigate the advantages and possible limitations of horizontal, vertical, and contour laminating to the sculptural form. Specific questions were set forth to help determine the different aspects of these types of lamination. The specific questions for which answers were sought are as follow. 1. How complex a design can be executed by the laminating process? 2. How close to the design will the initial lamination be? 3. What are the best methods of lamination for each process: types of clamps, types of wood, types of glue, dowels and weights? 4. How successful may these lamination techniques be combined? 5. As the work was in progress, which became more important-- the surface quality or the form? 6. Will laminated forms remain stable?

The Principles of Relational Databases

Every business has to keep records. Sometimes these records have to be presented in a standardized form, or more often they can be arranged in any way that suits the user. Business records are of little use unless they can be referred to quickly, to provide information when it is required. In computer systems it is essential to be able to recognize any particular record in a data file which is a collection of similar records kept on secondary computer storage devices.

Moving in a New Direction: An Exploration in Kinetics (open access)

Moving in a New Direction: An Exploration in Kinetics

Movement, whether conveyed through an actual motion or a gestured implication, remains an underlying theme in my creative process that started with my earliest works. I explored different aspects of kinetic sculpture, because I am seeking new ways to create motion such as experimenting with circulating air, wind, and the use of water features. I created a series consisting of three to five kinetic sculptures which do not rely on sound or direct viewer manipulation.
