Flight Measurements of the Effect of Various Amounts of Aileron Droop on the Low-Speed Lateral-Control Characteristics of an Observation Airplane

Report presenting tests of the low-speed lateral-control characteristics of an observation airplane with ailerons and spoilers in combination and with the spoilers disconnected and the ailerons used alone with various amounts of droop. The results indicated that in unstalled flight at low speeds and with flaps deflected, little or no aerodynamic benefit was derived by changing the lateral-control system from the aileron and spoiler combination to a normal aileron installation either with or without aileron droop.

An experimental study of applied ground loads in landing

Results are presented of an experimental investigation made of the applied ground loads and the coefficient of friction between the tire and the ground during the wheel spin-up process in impacts of a small landing gear under controlled conditions on a concrete landing strip in the Langley impact basin. The basic investigation included three major phases: impacts with forward speed at horizontal velocities up to approximately 86 feet per second, impacts with forward speed and reverse wheel rotation to simulate horizontal velocities up to about 273 feet per second, and spin-up drop tests for comparison with the other tests. In addition to the basic investigation, supplementary tests were made to evaluate the drag-load alleviating effects of prerotating the wheel before impact so as to reduce the relative velocity between the tire and ground.

Comparison of two fuels in bumblebee 18-inch ram jet incorporating rake-type flame holder

Report presenting an investigation to determine the performance of a Bumblebee 18-inch ram jet with a rake-type flame holder was conducted using kerosene and propylene oxide as fuels. Experiments occurred at a range of pressure altitudes and ram-pressure ratios over the operable range of fuel-air ratios. Investigation of losses in the XJ35-A-23 two-stage turbine

Report presenting an investigation of the stage work distribution and losses through the turbine at design conditions of the XJ35-A-23 two-stage turbine. The investigation showed that the poor performance was primarily due to large whirl velocities at the turbine exit, choking in the second-stage rotor, and a choking condition upstream of the physical blade throat. If these conditions are eliminated, satisfactory two-stage turbine performance can be obtained.

Further experiments on the flow and heat transfer in a heated turbulent air jet (open access)

Further experiments on the flow and heat transfer in a heated turbulent air jet

"Measurements have been made of the mean-total-head and mean-temperature fields in a round turbulent jet with various initial temperatures. The results show that the jet spreads more rapidly as its density becomes lower than that of the receiving medium, even when the difference is not sufficiently great to cause dynamic-pressure function. Rough analytical considerations have given the same relative spread. The effective "turbulent Prandtl number" for a section of the fully developed jet was found to be equal to the true (laminar) Prandtl number within the accuracy measurement" (p. 859).

Initial Experiments on the Brookhaven Reactor. VI. Fast Source Correction for Diffusion Length Measurements on BNL Reactor

In a manner somewhat analogue to that employed by R. Margulies in his memo (BNL Log No. C-2985) on fast source corrections in sigma piles, corrections to be applied to the data obtained on the laid-up graphite in the BNL reactor have been calculated. The correction was computed for a Ra-Be source using the data of Seren and using a standard graphite density for the BNL pile of 1.69. Values of the correction for different experimental sets of data were computed for each of three different diffusion lengths measured parallel to the channels. A correction for diffusion lengths perpendicular to the channels was also determined.

Summary of Available Data on the Strontium 90 Content of Foods and of Total Diets in the United States

It is expected that considerable data on Ra^226 and other naturally occurring radionuclides will be generated in coming year."
