An experimental study of five annular air inlet configurations at subsonic and transonic speeds

Report presenting an investigation of an NACA 1-80-100 nose inlet fitted alternately with an elliptical, a parabolic, a 14 degree-inch conical, and a 22 degree-inch conical central body at subsonic and transonic speeds in the 8-foot transonic tunnel. Drag, surface-pressure, and pressure-recovery measurements were obtained at 0 degrees angle of attack through a range of Mach numbers. Results regarding tunnel boundary interference, surface-pressure distribution, external drag, pressure recovery, and propulsive thrust comparison are provided.

The method is developed for compressible and incompressible nonviscous fluids, and results are presented for incompressible flow into a plane, two dimensional cascade and for compressible flow into an entrance rotor-blade row with tapered blades.

A Study of the Stability of the Incompressible Laminar Boundary Layer on Infinite Wedges

Note presenting a theoretical investigation of the flow over infinite wedges to test a conclusion that in a region of falling pressure, a thick velocity profile can be more stable than a thin profile although the velocity at the edge of the boundary layer and the pressure gradient are the same for both profiles. The investigation also leads to the interference that the calculated effects of a change in boundary-layer thickness on the stability and on the local roughness Reynolds number should be essentially unchanged by replacing the Schlichting single-parameter family of velocity profiles by the Hartree single-parameter family of velocity profiles.

"Convective heat-transfer coefficients in dry air were obtained for an ellipsoidal spinner of 30-inch maximum diameter for both stationary and rotating operation over a range of conditions including airspeeds up to 275 miles per hour, rotational speeds up to 1200 rpm, and angles of attack of zero and 4 degrees. The results are presented in terms of Nusselt numbers, Reynolds numbers, and convective heat-transfer coefficients. The studies included both uniform heating densities over the spinner and uniform surface temperatures" (p. 1).

For the particular component characteristics of the engine investigated, little improvement in thrust levels of interest by use of an adjustable rather than an optimum fixed first-stage turbine stator.

The free-stream Mach number was 1.98 and the free-stream Reynolds number was approximately 0.5 x 10 sup 6, based on body diameter. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental pressure distributions shows that for zero lift, either slender-body theory or higher-order theories yield results which are in good agreement with experiment."
