Model of beam head erosion

An analytical model of beam head dynamics is presented, leading to an estimate of the erosion rate due to the combined effects of Ohmic dissipation and scattering. Agreement with the results of a computer simulation and detailed one-dimensional computations is good in all respects except for the scaling of the erosion rate with net current.

Design and Test of the CC Cryostat Head Cart

This Engineering Note documents the design of the stand to be used to transport the CC Cryostat heads into the D-Zero clean room. Due to the width of the clean room access door, the heads will have to be upright to fit through. This head cart will hold the heads upright and wheel them into the clean room on a guided track. Before the wheels are placed on the heat cart, it will be used as a stand to place the heads on for the purpose of test fitting the super insulation. The head cart will not only be structurally sufficient to support the weight of the heads but also stiff enough to allow a maximum deflection of 1/2-inch at the end of the 48-inch cylinder. The heaviest head assembly weighs about 9000 pounds. Following A.I.S.C. specifications and using a 9000 pound design load, the head cart was initially designed and built and later modified in order to meet the deflection requirements. Bending and tension stresses were limited to two thirds the yield strength. Weld and shear stresses are limited to 0.4*Fy. Test Results on D-12A-2

The purpose of this report is to describe the recent tests of D-12A-2. The tests of D-12A-2 began on April 30 and ended on May 8. The unusually long test period was a result of an extensive series of magnetic field measurements in which we attempted to determine the shielding affects of a sextupole compensating coil and the decay of the currents induced in this coil. This report is short, but much of the data from the tests are included or summarized. We begin with a description of the coil and conductor, continue with the training history, the results of magnetic measurements, including the use of a sextupole compensating coil and then describe the results of heater induced quenches including estimates of axial and transverse quench propagation velocities.

Chloride content of Rocky Flats scrub alloy twelfth campaign solution following head end treatment

A single batch of dissolver solution from the twelfth Rocky Flats Scrub Alloy (RFSA) campaign has been analyzed for chloride content following head end treatment to reduce its concentration. Scrub alloy buttons were dissolved in Tank 6.4D during July. In subsequent head end processing, chloride was precipitated with mercurous ion added as the nitrate. The precipitate, Hg{sub 2}Cl{sub 2}, was co-removed with the gelatin floc via centrifugation. Duplicate samples from Tank 11.2, containing the head end product, produced excellent agreement between their density measurements and acid analyses, indicating them to be truly representative of the tank`s contents. Duplicate aliquots from each of these solutions were analyzed using the turbidimetric chloride method developed in the Separations Technology Laboratory. These resulted in an average chloride value of 53 ppm ({micro}g/mL) chloride for the head end product. Relative standard deviation of the measurement was {+-}6 ppm (n = 4), a precision of {+-}11%. Such a variance is normal at this low chloride level. Since initial chloride values prior to head end averaged 1365 ppm (0.0385M), as analyzed by Laboratories Department, a chloride DF of approximately 26 was obtained.
