THE (5-PHENYL-2-OXAZOLYL)PYRIDINES AS FLUORESCENT pH INDICATORS. AN APPLICATION TO CHEMICAL RADIATION DOSIMETRY (open access)

THE (5-PHENYL-2-OXAZOLYL)PYRIDINES AS FLUORESCENT pH INDICATORS. AN APPLICATION TO CHEMICAL RADIATION DOSIMETRY

The three isomeric (5-phenyl-2-oxazolyl)pyridines have been shown to be sensitive fluorescent pH indicators which show a pronounced change to increased visible fluorescence as the pH is lowered. Absorption and fluorescence spectral data and pK values are given. Selective excitation of fluorescence from the conjugate acid in the presence of the free base was found possible. The sensitivity of the 4-isomer was demonstrated to be adequate for determining the small amounts of acid produced in certain chemical dosimeter systems. (auth)

AN 80 MEGAWATT AQUEOUS HOMOGENEOUS BURNER REACTOR. Reactor Design and Feasibility Problem (open access)

AN 80 MEGAWATT AQUEOUS HOMOGENEOUS BURNER REACTOR. Reactor Design and Feasibility Problem

An 80 Mw aqueous homogeneous burner reactor suitable for producing 20 Mw of electricity at a remote location is described. The reactor fuel consists of a light water uranyl sulfate solution which acts as its own moderator and coolant. The uranium is highly enriched (93% U/sup 235/). The primary considerstions for the design were simplicity and reliability of the components, automatic demand control and safe for any load change, full xenon override not required, possibility of construction within the immediate future, and economic operation not the cortrolling factor. Reasonably complete studies are presented for the reactor physics, safety, stability, chemistry, hent transfer, and operation of the system. (auth)

709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data (open access)

709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data

A multi-purpose program for processing exponential data has been prepared for the 709 computer. The main purposes of the program is to compute the material buckling from raw data (given counts, time, and counter information) or from previously calculated Athermal's. It is also possible to compute only CeCh (end and harmonic corrections) for a given B11 or series if B11's no counting data being entered. In every case, pile measurements must be submitted as input for corrections.

Acceleration of high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine as determined from component performance characteristics 3: effect of turbine stator adjustment (open access)

Acceleration of high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine as determined from component performance characteristics 3: effect of turbine stator adjustment

From Summary: "An analytical investigation was made to determine from component performance the effect of turbine stator adjustment on the acceleration characteristics of a typical high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine. Turbine stator adjustment was adequate to permit engine operation in the intermediate-speed range, but was less satisfactory than the relatively simple schemes of compressor-interstage and -outlet bleed."

Accelerations and passenger harness loads measured in full-scale light-airplane crashes

From Introduction: "Light-airplane accident data, compiled by Crash Injury Research of Cornell University Medical College, indicate that human beings have often withstood declarations in excess of those imposed in airplane crashes involving extensive damage to the airplane structure (ref. 1). This study also correlates the extent of damage to the airplane structure with the injury incurred by the occupants during crash accidents."

Accuracy of Approximate Methods for Predicting Pressures on Pointed Nonlifting Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow (open access)

Accuracy of Approximate Methods for Predicting Pressures on Pointed Nonlifting Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow

Note presenting an investigation of the accuracy and range of applicability of the linearized theory, second-order theory, tangent-cone method, conical-shock-expansion theory, and Newtonian theory for predicting pressure distributions on pointed bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack. Three shapes, cone, ogive, and a modified optimum body, are investigated over a wide range of fineness ratios and Mach numbers. The results indicated that for most combinations of fineness ratio and Mach number, one of the approximate methods will give reasonable results.

Acoustic radiation from two-dimensional rectangular cutouts in aerodynamic surfaces

From Introduction: "The experiments in high-speed flow showed that an intense, high-frequency acoustic radiation is an essential feature of the problem. Consequently, a study of the acoustic field (involving schlieren observations and frequency and intensity measurements) was undertaken. This report presents the salient features of the study, which was mainly exploratory."

Activation Energy for Fission (open access)

Activation Energy for Fission

The experimentally determined exponential dependence of spontaneous fission rate on Z{sup 2}/A has been used to derive an expression for the dependence of the fission activation energy on Z{sup 2}/A. This expression has been used to calculate the activation energy for slow neutron induced fission and photofission. The correlation with the experimental data on these types of fission seems to be quite good.

Activation Energy for Fission

Abstract: The experimentally determined exponential dependence of spontaneous fission rate on Z^2/A has been used to derive an expression for the dependence of the fission activation energy on Z^2/A. This expression has been used to calculate the activation energy for slow neutron induced fission and photofission. The correlation with the experimental data on these types of fission seems to be quite good.

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite (open access)

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

In the memorandum entitled "Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite", dated February 25, 1953, there is described an experiment conducted by Gurinsky's group to determine the energy per gram of irradiated graphite released in a 200°C anneal. Similar experiments were subsequently conducted by W. Kosiba, differing from the original in two particulars: a) Instead of two graphite samples, one normal, and one irradiated, Kosiba used only an irradiated sample which he heated first to release the stored energy, and then again after the energy was released. In this way, he obtained time against temperature curves for both normal and irradiated graphite from the same sample. (These curves are graphed for each run in Figs. 1 thru 5.) b) The vycor tubing used in the original experiment was not used by Kosiba. Five runs of this experiment were selected, Runs 4P, 13, 36, and 40 at furnace temperatures of 200°C, and Run 45 at a furnace temperature of 400°C.
