Airborne Reconnaissance Survey of Northwestern Arizona (Arizona Strip) and Southwestern Utah

Abstract: From December 1953 to May 1954 an extensive airborne reconnaissance program was conducted in northwestern Arizona (Arizona Strip) and southwestern Utah. Five surface anomalies were detected, one of which has possible commercial value. All anomalies are within the boundaries of National Park Service jurisdiction, consequently, this report is not for public distribution until clearance is obtained from the National Park Service. A preliminary airborne reconnaissance program was also conducted in the Richfield area. No anomalies were discovered.

Bending Tests on Box Beams Having Solid- and Open-Construction Webs

"The results of an exploratory experimental investigation of the effects of replacing alternate webs in a multiweb beam by open, post-stringer construction are reported. Post-stringer (either upright or inclined posts) construction is shown to perform the function of comparable-weight, solid, fabricated webs in the stabilization of the compression cover of a beam in bending both before and after buckling" (p. 1).

BOILING RUBIDIUM AS A REACTOR COOLANT. PREPARATION OF RUBIDIUM METAL, PHYSICAL AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES, AND COMPATIBILITY WITH INCONEL (open access)

BOILING RUBIDIUM AS A REACTOR COOLANT. PREPARATION OF RUBIDIUM METAL, PHYSICAL AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES, AND COMPATIBILITY WITH INCONEL

Rubidium metal was investigated as a possible heattransfer medium for an aircraft reactor. The separation of rubidium from other alkali metals by ion exchange was demonstrated. Data are presented on the physical and thermodynamic properties of rubidium and corrosive effects on Inconel at elevated temperatures. It was concluded on the basis of empirical formulas that more heat can be transferred in a boiling rubidium system than in a comparable boiling water system. (C.H.)

Determination of flame temperatures from 2000 to 3000 K by microwave absorption

Report presenting equations derived for the measurement of flame temperatures from the attenuation of a microwave beam by temperature-induced free electrons from chemical elements introduced in the flame. The free electron collision frequency and an effective ionization potential for four alkali elements were determined experimentally. Results regarding the blast burner, liquid propellant burner, and effects of addition of salt solutions on flames are provided.

AN ESTIMATE OF THE LAPRE POWER AND STEAM FLOW CHARACTERISTICS (open access)

AN ESTIMATE OF THE LAPRE POWER AND STEAM FLOW CHARACTERISTICS

A method of numerical solution is developed for calculating the LAPRE (Los Alamos Power Reactor Experiment) coolant pressure drop and pcwer output with variable coolant inlet pressure, flow rate, and reactor solution temperature. The results of a series of calculations are presented that show excessive pressure drops and sonic exit flow as the flow rate is increased and the inlet pressure is decreased. Both supercritical and subcritical coolant flow regions are investignted. Reactor pcwer is shown to be strongly dependent on the solution temperaiure in the region of 700 to 750 deg F. At the design flow of 12 gal/min, excessive coolant pressure drops are encountered at inlet pressures of 2000 lb/in./ and below. (auth)

Examination of the Existing Data on the Heat Transfer of Turbulent Boundary Layers at Supersonic Speeds From the Point of View of Reynolds Analogy (open access)

Examination of the Existing Data on the Heat Transfer of Turbulent Boundary Layers at Supersonic Speeds From the Point of View of Reynolds Analogy

Note presenting heat-transfer data from four wind-tunnel experiments and two free-flight experiments with turbulent boundary layers to see whether or not they are well represented by the Reynolds analogy or a modification thereof. The data cover the Mach number range from 1.4 to 3.2 at effective Reynolds numbers from 0.4 million to 24 million on a variety of body shapes. The results are presented in the form of ratios of experimental Stanton number to skin-friction coefficient and the 32 values obtained all lie within the limits.
