Progress report documenting data collection related to the amount of silt carried by Texas streams and potential effects on water management infrastructure, with an explanation of methods, data broken down by various criteria, and analysis.

Measurements have been at the Pajarito remote control laboratory to determine the effect of change of shape on system reactivity for oralloy cylinders. Systems tested include cylindrical configurations with various height-to-diameter ratios ranging from slabs to rods. Each system reactivity is referred to that of a sphere in the same tamper. Reactivity tests were made on bare (untamped) Oy configurations, as well as on systems In tuballoy tampers 1.12,1.87,and 8.0 thick. The amount of reactivity change associated with a particular cylinder height-to-diameter ratio is feud to be a function of tamper thickness, and is greatest for very thin tampers.

This investigation was begun as a result of a mass spectrometric measurement of two samples of tritium which had been stored for several months in Pyrex glass bulbs using stopcocks. The first of these was originally supposed to be of extremely high isotopic and chemical purity. What was observed at this time was 1.45 H had accumulated, and that tritiated methane, CT4, was also present to the extent of 0.18%. A consistent attempt had been made in this sample to protect the gas from contact with the grease by covering the stopcock with mercury. the second sample was a composite of T2 samples of various degrees of enrichment with an isotopic analysis of 92% T. No protection had been attempted during its storage, and 0.86% CT4 to be present.

A short survey of some of the metabolic relationships of the elements, cerium, colurbium, plutonium, strontium, yttrium, and zirconium is presented. While the results of internally deposited radium have not been investigated in these experiments, they have been extensively studies by others. Because so much is known of its biological effects, it has been included in this historical survey.

In an effort to gain information on the nature of the photon-meson and photon-nucleon interaction, a study of the artificial production of mesons by photons has been made at the Berkeley synchrotron. The major effort of this research was concentrated on a measurement of the energy and angular distribution of u+-mesons produced when the photons strike a target of liquid hydrogen. Detection of the mesons is accomplished electronically by the technique of delayed coincidence.

The reaction of alanine-1-C14 and phenylalanine-1-C14 with acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine has been studied and the carboxyl group of the amino acid has been shown to be the exclusive source of carbon dioxide involved.

The present liquid third safety is considered undesirable for the piles at their present power levels. Any increase in power level and graphite temperature makes the need for an alternative third safety increasingly imperative. The use of the third safety is envisioned under conditions where the supply of cooling water to an operating pile is interrupted and concurrently the safety rods full to enter the pile because of slight shifting of the top shield or larger shifting of the winches, relative to the pile proper. Under these conditions, undesirable properties of a liquid third safety are present and are discussed in this memorandum.

In November, 1949, an industrial hygiene study was made of the operations conducted in the Bio-Assay Laboratory, 706 Building, 700 Area. This study was conducted by W.E. Gill and reported in HW-15654. One of the potential health hazards investigated was the use of benzol in laboratory procedures. An evaluation of this problem where the solvent was employed for cleaning glassware indicated that the solvent vapor was present in the workers` breathing zone in concentrations occasionally as high as 170 ppM. Five samples collected at this washing operation showed an average concentration of over 100 ppM; all samples being over the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of 35 ppM. As a result of the findings of this study several recommendations were made, one of which was the advisability of instituting a program for urine sulfate determinations for the laboratory personnel exposed to benzol. It was felt that this test would demonstrate more precisely than air sampling the actual inhalation and absorption of solvent vapors experienced by the operators and exemplifying such factors as variations in individual respiratory rates and care in the use of solvent during washing.

This HAPO report documents the design criteria for the P-10 air monitor at the 300 Area. Minimum reliable readings and accompanying remarks document testing of four different monitors.

This document discusses a meeting held to inform members of the Biology Division of the status of P-10 problems, to exchange ideas on methods of attacking these problems, and to consider new problems.

This is a progress report of the production reactors on the Hanford Reservation for the month of July 1950. This report takes each division (e.g., manufacturing, medical, accounting, occupational safety, security, reactor operations, etc.) of the site and summarizes its accomplishments and employee relations for that month.

Progress is reported by the Mechanical Development group and by the Plant Assistance group. The Mechanical Development group reports on the thimble removal program, special pile measurements and instruments, graphite sampling, and the ruptured slug problem. The Plant Assistance group reports on technical information on the B, D, F, and H piles, special request container slug, exposure of P-10 fuel slugs, slug corrosion studies, front tube corrosion, and flow laboratory experiments.

The corrosion rates of mild steel and austenitic stainless steel and the resistance of several commercial protective coatings were established."

Report discussing a study to determine experimentally whether a low neutron binding energy must be assigned to Kr⁸⁷ to explain the neutron emission or whether the beta-decay energy is especially high, as well as to determine the fission yield of Br⁸⁷.

Due to a need of precise thermodynamical and thermochemical data on these elements and their compounds for the understanding and correlation of the chemical behavior of these substances, this report measures the heat of the solution of neptunium metal and the heats of formation of the neptunium chlorides using a microcalorimeter to measure the heat.
