Final report on Production Test 105-8-P -- Film formation
Tests made prior to beginning operation of the 100 Areas showed that the cooling water had a tendency to deposit a film upon the slug and tubs surfaces. This film would manifest itself as an increase in the pressure drop through the tubes and its most serious affect would be the resultant decrease in the slug to water host transfer coefficient which would increase the slug surface temperature, causing greatly accelerated corrosion rates. It was thus proposed to study film formation an a production test. This report discusses this test.

Inorganic Separations Using Ion Exchange
From summary: "In previous project work, dilute mixtures of inorganic cations in aqueous solution have been concentrated by adsorption of the cations on a synthetic resin and they have been fractionated by selective desorption of the cations from the resin. Investigation of Dive Brakes and a Dive-Recovery Flap on a High-Aspect-Ratio Wing in the Langley 8-Foot High-Speed Tunnel
"The results of tests made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a solid brake, a slotted brake, and a dive-recovery flap mounted on a high aspect ratio wing at high Mach numbers are presented. The data were obtained in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel for corrected Mach numbers up to 0.940. The results have been analyzed with regard to the suitability of dive-control devices for a proposed high-speed airplane in limiting the airplane terminal Mach number by the use of dive brakes and in achieving favorable dive-recovery characteristics by the use of a dive-recovery flap" (p. 1).

Investigations of Effects of Surface Temperature and Single Roughness Elements on Boundary-Layer Transition
"The laminar boundary layer and the position of the transition point were investigated on a heated flat plate. It was found that the Reynolds number of transition decreased as the temperature of the plate is increased. It is shown from simple qualitative analytical considerations that the effect of variable viscosity in the boundary layer due to the temperature difference produces a velocity profile with an inflection point if the wall temperature is higher than the free-stream temperature" (p. 587).

Fractionation of Fission Products and Heavy Elements by Volatilization Methods
Technical report describing the attempt to separate the long lived fission product oxides by volatilization methods. A fractionization crucible was used. The fractionations give a fair idea of the relative volatilities of the longer lived fission products and also of the degrees of separation of the plutonium oxide or oxides from the fission products.

Neutron Diffusion in a Space Lattice of Fissionable and Absorbing Materials
Methods are developed for estimating the effect on a critical assembly of fabricating it as a lattice rather than in the more simply interpreted homogeneous manner. An idealized case is discussed supposing an infinite medium in which fission, elastic scattering and absorption can occur, neutrons of only one velocity present, and the neutron m.f.p. independent of position and equal to unity with the unit of length use. A Homogeneous High Temperature Power Pile Utilizing Graphite Which Has Been Impregnated With Uranium
Thermal reactors that have a significant fraction of fissioning occurring just above thermal energies are studied. First, the thermal neutron diffusion equation is corrected for fast fission effects. The resulting diffusion equation is shown to be equivalent to the Fermi Age equation corresponding to the same physical assumptions. Next, the one delayed neutron group kinetic equations for the corrected thermal flux are given, and the life time of the thermal neutron is corrected by the average slowing down time. (auth)

The Effects of Fast Neutrons on the Ability of Mice to Take Forced Exercise
From abstract: "In an attempt to gain some insight into the physiological condition of mice surviving massive doses of radiation, a study of their vitality was undertaken. It was assured that the ability of these animals to do forced work would be a measure of their vitality, Stimulating exposed animals to run in exercise wheels to their fullest capacity, has resulted in a demonstration of a striking vitality less during a post-irradiative period, when no other effects are demonstrable by gross examination. Mice subjected to a medium-lethal dose of fast neutrons show a continuous vitality loss over a 300 day period following exposure. Control animals show no appreciable loss of vitality up to about 8 months of age, after which a gradual loss can be noted, probably due to a normal gereologic process."

Application of the Analogy Between Water Flow With a Free Surface and Two-Dimensional Compressible Gas Flow
"The theory of the hydraulic analogy -- that is, the analogy between water flow with a free surface and two-dimensional compressible gas flow -- and the limitations and conditions of the analogy are discussed. A test was run using the hydraulic analogy as applied to the flow about circular cylinders of various diameters at subsonic velocities extending into the supercritical range. The apparatus and techniques used in this application are described and criticized" (p. 311).

The Charge on Uranium(VI) in Acid Solution
Abstract. The distribution coefficient of U(VI) between perchloric acid solutions and benzene solutions of TTA has been measured as a function of the acidity. It was possible to interpret the data in terms of the charge on the U(VI) species present in the aqueous phase. The experiments indicate that U(VI) exists as an ion charge +2 at acidities from 0.1M to 2.5M. In the interpretations of the distribution data, it was necessary to know the acidity coefficient of the uranyl chelate in the benzene solution. This was determined by measurement of the solubility of the compound UO2K2 - xH2). The activity coefficient of UO2K2 was found to decrease rapidly as the concentration of TTA in the benzene phase increased above 0.1M. This is probably due to the formation of a species involving more than two TTA molecules per U(VI)

A Theorem and Its Application to Finite Tampers
A theorem is derived which is useful in the analysis of neutron problems in which all neutrons have the same velocity. It is applied to determine extrapolated end-points, the asymptotic amplitude from a point source, and the neutron density at the surface of a medium. Formulas for the effect of finite tampers are derived by its aid, and their accuracy is discussed.

Columbia River temperature survey at Hanford Engineer Works. Final report
It was agreed during a meeting on July 10, 1945, investigation should be made to determine how fast and in what fashion the temperature of the effluent water from the 100 Areas is dissipated in the Columbia River. A preliminary report on these investigation was issued March 1, 1946: it discussed the testing techniques developed and the results of a survey made at the 100-B Area. Following a review of the data and tentative conclusions resented therein, it was agreed to extend the survey using similar technique: to the D and F Areas, and to determine if the tentative conclusions were substantiated.
