Geotechnical Aspects of Rock Erosion in Emergency Spillway Channels, Report 1 (open access)

Geotechnical Aspects of Rock Erosion in Emergency Spillway Channels, Report 1

"The problem of rock erosion in unlined emergency spillway channels is described in this first-of-a series report. Recent CE and non-CE case histories which illustrate the potentially hazardous impacts of excessive erosion in discharge channels are described as are the various factors controlling erosion and other responses to emergency spillway overflow. Research programs designed to improve geotechnical capabilities with respect to selection of cost-effective preventive and remedial measures in discharge channels where the risk of excessive erosion appears high are also discussed" (abstract, para. 1).

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation (open access)

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Abstract: "Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of Isabella Dam Spillway to determine the adequacy of proposed spillway, dam, and channel improvements. The model reproduced an area of the reservoir 800 ft wide by 1,100 ft long, the spillway, and the entire length of the exit channel. Unsatisfactory flow conditions were observed in the vicinity of the spillway crest due to approach conditions to the spillway. Large cross waves, present in the exit channel just downstream of the spillway, resulted in occasional overtopping of the right wall. A grouted rock dike that provided satisfactory flow conditions at the spillway and downstream throughout the exit channel was placed adjacent to the existing spillway approach wall."

Dynamics of Wheeled Vehicles, Report 1: A Mathematical Model for the Traversal of Rigid Obstacles by a Pneumatic Tire, Appendix B: Digital Implementation of Segmented Tire Model

Summary: "This appendix presents the procedures for digital implementation of the segmented tire model, developed in the basic report for an analog computer. Two procedures are required: (a) determination of the segment spring coefficient from measured load-deflection test results, and (b) computation of the resultant force vector transmitted to the axle. Digital programs for both procedures were written in Fortran IV for a GE-420 system, and are included" (p. xi).

Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam (open access)

Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam

This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the outlet works for the Wappapello Dam The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 25. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.

Moisture-Strength Characteristics of Selected Soils in Thailand, Volume 1: Analysis and Application of Data

Partial summary: "Soil moisture, soil strength, and other relevant data were collected in Thailand during two wet seasons and one dry season for use in the development of methods to predict soil trafficability for off-road ground contact vehicles in Southeast Asia. Data were collected at 75 test sites distributed in eight geographic areas which had differences in soils, weather regimes, terrain, and land use" (p. xi).

Investigation for South Fill Area, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York

Abstract: "The investigation reported herein describes surface and subsurface horizontal and vertical control, sampling, testing, laboratory testing, and analyses performed to determine the stability of a rock fill over fat clay deposits (South Fill) bordering the Hudson River at the West Point Military Academy, West Point, New York. The South Fill area in its present configuration was found to be stable and should remain stable provided use is limited to parking, athletic fields, and recreational areas. The report contains documentation of data collected since the monitoring program began in 1961."
