The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with William Brewer. Brewer joined the Navy in April of 1943. He completed Gunnery School and Radio School. In mid-1944, Brewer was assigned to Patrol Squadron 47 (VP-47) and later deployed to Hawaii. Beginning in spring of 1945, he served as an Aviation Radioman-Gunner aboard USS Bataan (CVL-29). The task force conducted a series of raids to support the invasion of Okinawa. They participated in the Battle of the East China Sea, and conducted numerous bombing runs on airfields and factories in Japan. He returned to the US in September of 1945 and was discharged in March of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Joe Van Dyke. Van Dyke was drafted into the Army Air Forces in March 1943. Upon completion of basic training at Sheppard Field, he was assigned to the nearby aircraft mechanic school. He then attended gunnery school and became a top turret gunner on a B-24, also doubling as assistant engineer. In August 1944 his crew joined the 466th Bombardment Group, 787th Bombardment Squadron in England. While stationed there, Van Dyke survived V-1 and V-2 rocket attacks. His initial missions involved transporting fuel to France. Moving onto strategic bombing operations, he flew 32 missions, mostly over Germany. He also provided ground support over France and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In all of his missions, he never once had to fire his gun. After Germany surrendered, Van Dyke was reassigned to B-29s and trained for the Pacific. He had accumulated enough points, however and was discharged in July 1945.

Transcript of an oral interview with Horace C. Jones. Jones enlisted in the Army Air Corps in order not to be drafted and trained in Goergia and Miami. He went to Wyoming for gunnery school. In 1943, he was assigned to the 15th Air Force in Italy. He served as a waist gunner in a B-24. Jones describes his thoughts and feelings while on missions and how he operated. After 50 missions, Jones was returned to the US to train other flight crews. He was in the US when the war ended and was discharged. He re-enlisted shortly thereafter.

She is fourth generation of her family who settled in Fredericksburg. She shares details of her family history. She graduated from high school in 1941, then trained as a nurse at Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. After graduating in September of 1944, she married Hans Hannemann. She speaks about life in Fredericksburg during wartime. Hans did not serve in the war. Dorthy passed away in June of 2017.

He attended officer candidate school where he received a commission before going to radar school and being assigned to a meteorology school in Illinois. He served at a weather station in Alaska prior to the outbreak of the Korean War. Brunner discusses his long career in the Air Force.

He discusses his experiences during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. Ingram’s (interviewer) primary interest in the battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57). Ingram interviewed Edwin Riemann on 22 January 1989 about his service aboard USS South Dakota (BB-57) during WWII. Riemann served as a yeoman in the captain’s office before becoming the ship’s bugler. He discusses the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, night action off Guadalcanal and being in the Atlantic for a time.

He served with the 581st Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU). They were commissioned at Port Hueneme, California in January of 1944 with personnel from the 123rd Battalion. They shipped out 13 March and traveled to Pearl Harbor. Their unit took over all maintenance and minor construction of the Naval Ammunition Depot. Binkley worked in a number of areas including construction, electrical work, censoring the mail and other postal work. He shares his living and working experiences on the island. He was discharged in March of 1946.
