The Stability of Laminar Flow Past a Sphere (open access)

The Stability of Laminar Flow Past a Sphere

"As a contribution to the problem of turbulence on a surface of rotation, the method of small oscillation is applied to the flow past a sphere. It was found that the method developed for two-dimensional flow is applicable without modifications. The frictional layer in the vicinity of the stagnation point of a surface of rotation is less stable against small two-dimensional disturbances than in the stagnation point itself, as proved from an analysis of the velocity distribution made by Homann" (p. 1).

Statistical analysis of service stresses in aircraft wings (open access)

Statistical analysis of service stresses in aircraft wings

On the wing structures of modern high speed aircraft, in particular, the comparatively high-service stresses and the consistently increasing number of hours of operation during the life of the separate airplane parts make the studies of strength requirement under recurrent stresses appear of major concern. The DVL has therefore made exhaustive studies for this structural group of airplanes, some results of which are reported here.

The Strength and Stiffness of Shear Webs With and Without Lightening Holes (open access)

The Strength and Stiffness of Shear Webs With and Without Lightening Holes

Report presenting the results of nearly 200 tests made on the strength of shear webs of 24S-T aluminum alloy, with and without lightening holes. The tests were made in a jig of the single-specimen type, in which the specimen is free to collapse completely without developing diagonal tension. Results regarding the strength of the shear webs, stiffness of shear webs, and permanent-set tests are provided.

Strength tests of thin-walled elliptic duralumin cylinders in pure bending and in combined pure bending and torsion (open access)

Strength tests of thin-walled elliptic duralumin cylinders in pure bending and in combined pure bending and torsion

An analysis is presented of the results of tests made by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on an investigation of the strength of thin-walled circular and elliptic cylinders in pure bending and in combined torsion and bending. In each of the loading conditions, the bending moments were applied in the plane of the major axis of the ellipse.

Stresses Around Rectangular Cut-Outs in Skin-Stringer Panels Under Axial Loads

"The calculation of the stresses around cut-outs is discussed on the basis of a simplified application of the shear-lag theory previously published. Experimental stringer strains were measured around a systematic series of cut-outs. The test results indicate that the proposed method of calculating the stringer stresses is acceptable as a basis for stress analysis" (p. 1).

A study of the application of data on various types of flap to the design of fighter brakes

Report presenting an approximate method of applying the available data on various types of flaps in the design of fighter brakes together with several examples of its use. The computed effects of flap type, size, location, and deflection as well as the effects of altitude and initial velocities on braking characteristics are also shown in some examples using the method to determine various flap arrangements.

A Study of the Tightness and Flushness of Machine-Countersunk Rivets for Aircraft

Bulletin presenting the results of an investigation to determine possible improvements in the tightness and the flushness of machine-countersunk rivets. Specimens used in the study were simple lap joints made by different riveting methods. The results indicate that a comparison of the quality of machine-countersunk riveted joints on the basis of maximum load alone is not justified.

Study of Turning Performance of a Fighter-Type Airplane Particularly as Affected by Flaps and Increased Supercharging, Special Report (open access)

Study of Turning Performance of a Fighter-Type Airplane Particularly as Affected by Flaps and Increased Supercharging, Special Report

"Results of a study to determine the effects on turning performance due to various assumed modifications to a typical Naval fighter airplane are presented. The modifications considered included flaps of various types, both part and full space, increased supercharging, and increased wing loading. The calculations indicated that near the low-speed end of the speed range, the turning performance, as defined by steady level turns at a given speed, would be improved to some extent by any of the flaps considered at altitudes up to about 25,000 feet" (p. 1).

A Stylistic Analysis of Béla Bartók's "Mikrokosmos" (open access)

A Stylistic Analysis of Béla Bartók's "Mikrokosmos"

Bela Bartok's art is a perfect microcosm of the art of the twentieth century. It is interwoven with the musical conceptions and techniques of the great Western European masters, without in any way obscuring the individuality, the national consciousness, and the personal style and originality of the composer's own musical language -- a language rooted in the glorious tradition of his people. In the six volumes of the Mikrokosmos, or "little world," Bartok has presented a series of progressively difficult pieces designed -- if not intentionally, at least effectively -- to introduce to the piano student a technical approach to piano playing in the modern idiom. Admittedly, the etude does not cover every pianistic technical problem. It clearly shows that Bartok fully appreciates the worth of the great wealth of piano literature, and does not prescribe his method as a "cure-all" for the technical problems of piano playing.

Theory of Heat Transfer and Hydraulic Resistance of Oil Radiators (open access)

Theory of Heat Transfer and Hydraulic Resistance of Oil Radiators

"In the present report the coefficients of heat transfer and hydraulic resistance are theoretically obtained for the case of laminar flow of a heated viscous liquid in a narrow rectangular channel. The results obtained are applied to the computation of oil radiators, which to a first approximation may be considered as made up of a system of such channels. In conclusion, a comparison is given of the theoretical with the experimental results obtained from tests on airplane oil radiators" (p. 1).

Typical Elements of Brahms's Choral Style as Found in the German Requiem (open access)

Typical Elements of Brahms's Choral Style as Found in the German Requiem

An unusual opportunity to hear and perform this work has been afforded at North Texas State Teachers College by the presentation of the German Requiem in the summer of 1941. Furthermore, a Brahms Festival, including another presentation of the Requiem along with outstanding compositions of Brahms in other media, is to be given during commencement week of June, 1942. Not only does this type of emphasis promote interest among students and faculty, but it also serves as a stimulus to detailed study of the German Requiem, thus intensifying the immediate importance and personal significance of the subject.
