Artificial cooling of the Columbia River by dam regulation, 1961 (open access)

Artificial cooling of the Columbia River by dam regulation, 1961

This report details benefits of an increase in the flow of water from the lower depths of Grand Coulee Reservoir which used to lower river temperatures at HAPO. A net average daily reduction of over 1.7{degree}C resulted at HAPO. The peak reduction was over 4.0{degree}C. The net production gain from temperature change was 13,350 MWD. The cost of control was: Grand Coulee Charges (Estimated) $37,000, and other 3,500, for a total of $40,500.

Probability of film boiling burnout (open access)

Probability of film boiling burnout

The power of some SRP fuel assemblies is limited by the burnout safety factor (BOSF) in some applications. This power limitation is unnecessarily restrictive, because the current conservatism in predicting film boiling burnout is unusually large compared to that in predicting unstable flow in fuel assemblies. In the past, most SRP fuel assemblies operated at the flow instability limit and were far enough removed from burnout that a convenient and very conservative burnout limit system could be used. If the same degree of safety was used for both burnout and flow instability, the power of BOSF-limited assemblies could be increased. This memorandum, which is part of the program to improve the system for protection against burnout, evaluates the probability and consequences of burnout at various BOSF levels.

Technical note on results of production test IP-628-AI: Crosstie flow test and flushing calibration, and the earlier production tests IP-573-AI and IP-499-AI

A series of three experimental tests was conducted on the operation and adequacy of the K-Reactors` third, or last-ditch, cooling system. The first test showed considerable line corrosion the second test was performed directly after line cleaning, and the third test showed a significant amount of additional line corrosion after only nine months of service. The present cooling adequacy of this last-ditch system at the KE and KW reactors is summarized these show the power levels for which we have adequate last-ditch cooling as a function of the crosstie coolant temperature. These figures include the effects of increasing the number of pumps that remain in operation at the other K-Reactor, and various other operating or emergency conditions. These curves are for diesel pump speeds of 750 rpm which are planned for June of this year. In these figures the crosstie temperature is assumed to be a conservative 5{degrees}C above the process water inlet temperature.

Cap-spire pulsing (open access)

Cap-spire pulsing

The cap-spire pulsing technique of preheating the cap-spire portion of the fuel assembly does significantly improve the brazing of the cap-spire assembly. The air pocket at the spire wafer junction is fully removed. The cap side wafer is essentially 100% wetted with brazing alloy. Destructive tests show that a 4 to 1 improvement in most quality measurements is achieved over present cap preheating techniques, without using additional cleaning step of spire etching. The pulsing is accomplished by a cammed drive system, using a stroke of three-fourths of an inch with a spring return. The system is driven by an electrical gear reduction motor at a rate of 1.4 pulses per second. A preheating cycle of 21 {plus_minus} 2 seconds is used for the current I&E cap designs. The cap-spire assembly does not require any special treatment other than the normal chemical cleaning.
