Experiments on Drag of Revolving Disks, Cylinders and Streamline Rods at High Speeds (open access)

Experiments on Drag of Revolving Disks, Cylinders and Streamline Rods at High Speeds

Report presenting an experimental investigation concerned primarily with the extension of test data on the drag of revolving disks, cylinders, and streamline rods to high Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. The tests generally confirm earlier theories and add in some new results. One of the primary findings of interest is that skin friction does not depend on Mach number.

Flight Tests of Modifications to Improve the Aileron Control Characteristics of a North American XP-51 Airplane (AC No. 41-38) (open access)

Flight Tests of Modifications to Improve the Aileron Control Characteristics of a North American XP-51 Airplane (AC No. 41-38)

Investigations were undertaken to improve the ailerons of a P-51 fighter so as to obtain greater effectiveness without increasing the stick forces. Modifications consisted of increasing the deflection range of the aileron to 70 percent and changing the original concave section to a thick section with beveled trailing edge. Results of the modified ailerons showed an increase in effectiveness over the original aileron of 70 percent at low speed and 55 percent at high speeds.

Two-Dimensional Irrotational Transonic Flows of a Compressible Fluid (open access)

Two-Dimensional Irrotational Transonic Flows of a Compressible Fluid

The methods of NACA TN No. 995 have been slightly modified and extended in include flows with circulation by considering the alteration of the singularities of the incompressible solution due to the presence of the hypergeometric functions in the analytic continuation of the solution. It was found that for finite Mach numbers the only case in which the nature of the singularity can remain unchanged is for a ratio of specific heats equal to -1. From a study of two particular flows it seems that the effect of geometry cannot be neglected, and the conventional "pressure-correction" formulas are not valid, even in the subsonic region if the body is thick, especially if there is a supersonic region in the flow.

Effects of Some Present-Day Airplane Design Trends on Requirements for Lateral Stability

Note presenting computations made to determine the effects of some airplane design trends on the fin area and the dihedral angle required for lateral stability. The specific factors studied were wing loading, moments of inertia in roll and yaw, wing chord, and tail length. The results of the computations are presented in the form of diagrams of variations of fin area with dihedral angle for neutral stability.

Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis III (open access)

Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis III

Although the overall reaction of photosynthesis can be specified with some degree of certainty (CO{sub 2} + H{sub 2}O + light {yields} sugars + possibly other reduced substances), the intermediates through which the carbon passes during the course of this reduction have, until now, been largely a matter of conjecture. The availability of isotopic carbon, that is, a method of labeling the carbon dioxide, provides the possibility of some very direct experiments designed to recognize these intermediates and, perhaps, help to understand the complex sequence and interplay of reactions which must constitute the photochemical process itself. The general design of such experiments is an obvious one, namely the exposure of the green plant to radioactive carbon dioxide and light under a variety of conditions and for continually decreasing lengths of time, followed by the identification of the compounds into which the radioactive carbon is incorporated under each condition and time period. From such data it is clear that in principle, at least, it should be possible to establish the sequence of compounds in time through which the carbon passes on its path from carbon dioxide to the final products. In the course of shortening the photosynthetic times, one times, one …
