The problem of this study was to analyze the perceptions held by the following three groups concerning orientation criteria for public junior colleges: (1) a random sample of authorities in the field of orientation, (2) a random sample of public junior college presidents, and (3) a random sample of orientation directors of public junior colleges.

During the first half of the twentieth century the trumpet has gained its position as a solo instrument, even surpassing its esteemed position in the High Baroque Era. With the combined efforts of performers like Herbert L. Clark, Ernest S. Williams, and Joseph Arban, and the efforts of the French school of trumpet playing, notably those of Raymond Sabarich, the trumpet has risen from a mere accompanying instrument of the Classical Period and early Romantic Era to its present place as an expressive solo instrument. In this relatively new position the trumpeter is faced with one serious problem: that is one of limited literature. The trumpeter of today is almost compelled to perform either works of the Baroque Era or solos written within the last thirty years.

The purposes of this study were (1) to describe the persons twenty-five and older entering the teacher education program and seeking certification, and (2) to compare the persons twenty-five and older with a "typical" group of persons under twenty-five with respect to (a) ability, as measured by the Cooperative School and College Ability Test, (b) factors for entering teaching, as measured by "Factors Influencing the Decision to Become a Teacher," (c) attitudes held toward teaching, as measured by the Kerlinger Education Attitude Scale, (d) professional aspirations, and (e) role expectations, as measured by the Teacher Practices. Questionnaire.

This study is made to evaluate some of these forces for the thirty titled Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas of the United States which are located on and overlap borders of two or more states. The attempt is made to determine if border SMSAs conform to the Burgess model despite state lines and other barriers imposed between SMSA parts, or whether such barriers restrict functional growth to the state side containing the central city.

The British Museum, Additional Manuscript 4918, provides an interesting insight into the sociology as well as the music of the Baroque period. This treatise was written by an unknown "music-lover," who was not a musician by profession. All that is definitely known about his identity are the initials A.D.V. that appear on the title page. The manuscript is dated 1702. In method and design this work represents the transitional character of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Because the author was not a professional musician, it is important to consider the sociological aspects which influenced the writing of a treatise of this sort. A study of the development of Baroque musical treatises indicates a direct parallel with the social and political temperament of the time.

Time-differential perturbed angular correlation techniques were applied to a systematic study of insulating antiferromagnets and rare-earth intermetallic alloys doped with either /sup 111m/Cd or $sup 111$In. The internal magnetic fields and electric field gradients at the radioactive nucleus are deduced from the experimentally measured perturbation factors. The analysis of fluoride, chloride, oxide, and sulfide data shows the systematic variation of the observed supertransferred hyperfine fields with the intervening anion covalency and allows extraction of covalency parameters after the adoption of a simple model. A comparison of the transferred hyperfine field data between fluoride perovskites and the corresponding quadratic layer compounds produces a value for the zero- point spin deviation in magnetically two-dimensional antiferromagnets which is in qualitative agreement with existing theoretical estimates. Paramagnetic shifts due to transferred hyperfine field and field-induced spin-flopping have also been observed. By careful temperature regulation the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization can be plotted next to a diamagnetic impurity in RbMnF$sub 3$ and MnF$sub 2$. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the effects of specific structured classroom activities and events on the cardiac rates of students in the classroom, (2) to determine whether or not there was a detectable difference in the cardiac rates of students involved in structured classroom activities and events and cardiac rates of students not so involved, and (3) to determine the effects on the cardiac rates of students involved in two techniques of attaining student involvement and attention to a classroom discussion or topic.

The government of any state has the responsibility of providing for the health, safety, welfare, education, and protection of its citizens. To accomplish these goals, states have created elaborate and complex administrative organizations staffed by thousands of bureaucrats. The increased demands of the citizens of each state upon their state governments for better education, highways, and increased protection are reflected both in the expansion of the agencies created to provide these services and, in turn, in requests for funds in ever increasing amounts to expand the scope of the services. The ability of a state to fund each agency's request is definitely limited; no state is sufficiently wealthy to grant every request. Rather, a state must make some judgment in the distribution of its limited resources (money) among competing and demanding sources. This requires planning and is called budgeting, which one writer has defined as "one of the major processes by which the use of public resources is planned and controlled."

High resolution, proton decoupled {sup 13}C nmr are observed for a series of neat nematic liquid crystals, the p-alkoxyazoxybenzenes, and a smectic-A liquid crystal, diethylazoxydibenzoate in a magnetic field of 23 kG. The (uniaxial) order parameters S = <P{sub 2}(cos{theta})> are found to be about 0.4 and 0.9 for the nematic and smectic-A phase respectively at the clearing points. The order parameter increases with decreasing temperature in the nematic phase but is constant, or nearly so, with temperature in the smectic-A phase. In the nematic series studied, the ordering exhibits an even-odd alternation along the series and qualitative agreement with a recent theory due to Marcelja is found. In both phases, the spectra show that the molecule rotates rapidly about its long axis. Tentative conclusions about molecular conformational motion and {sup 14}N spin relaxation are presented for both nematic and smectic-A phases. In the smectic-A phase, the sample is rotated about an axis perpendicular to H{sub 0} and the resulting spectra are discussed. Four sialon-type materials using volcanic ash as a raw material were characterized and some of their properties were determined. The M3 and M4 materials were identified as ..beta../sup 1/--Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ sialons; their principal constituent is silicon. The M2 material was identified as a 15R-A1N polytype sialon whose principal constituent is aluminum. The M1 material is a mixture of the two types. An overview of results showing the general structural formulae and the relative order of the materials with respect to various properties as determined by the investigation is presented. It is concluded that of the materials tested, the M2 material shows the most promise as a candidate for meeting some of the current needs for high-temperature materials. It is also concluded that more research is needed in order to explain the low resistance of these materials to thermal shock since their coefficients of thermal expansion are relatively low.

The efforts of Republican congressional leaders to secure passage of civil rights measures during the 1960's will be emphasized in this thesis. Also, an effort will be made to present objectively the views of Republican congressional leaders toward civil rights measures and to show how they contributed, in the day-to-day legislative proceedings, to the passage of these measures.

The purpose of this study will be to compare unwed mothers with married pregnant mothers on the Depression, Psychopathic Deviate and Hypomania scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The major hypothesis is that the scores of the unwed mother will reflect more psychopathology which will be taken to indicate that the unwed mother's problems antedate their pregnancy. (The term, "psychopathology," as used herein is defined as any maladaptive behavior which is a result of inadequate personality development.)

This investigation was concerned with the effects of electromyographic biofeedback on the muscular tension of patients diagnosed in a particular personality state. These personality traits were manic, agitated, depressed, and a comparison group.

The potential for contamination of groundwater by organic pollutants leached from in-situ spent shale was studied in a series of laboratory leaching experiments. Both batch-mode and continuous-flow column experiments were conducted to study the leaching phenomenon. Experimental variables included retorting characteristics of spent shale, leaching time, initial quality of leach water, temperature of leach water, and particle size of spent shale. Several unique samples of spent shale were examined during the eaching experiments, including spent shale samples produced during combustion retorting, inert gas retorting, and combustion retorting employing recycle gas. The solid-phase organic carbon content of spent shale samples ranged from 0.2 to 3.9 percent by weight. Leachate derived from the batch-mode experiments was analyzed for organic carbon, organic nitrogen, phenols, and acid/base/netral fractions. The highest levels of organic carbon were detected in leachate derived from spent shale produced during either inert gas retorting or combstion retorting using recycle gas. The highest levels of phenols were observed in leachate obtained from spent shale produced during inert gas retorting; significant levels of organic nitrogen were also detected in various leachate samples.
