Systems Studies

The Systems Studies Activity had two objectives: (1) to investigate nontechnical barriers to the deployment of biomass production and supply systems and (2) to enhance and extend existing systems models of bioenergy supply and use. For the first objective, the Activity focused on existing bioenergy markets. Four projects were undertaken: a comparative analysis of bioenergy in Sweden and Austria; a one-day workshop on nontechnical barriers jointly supported by the Production Systems Activity; the development and testing of a framework for analyzing barriers and drivers to bioenergy markets; and surveys of wood pellet users in Sweden, Austria and the US. For the second objective, two projects were undertaken. First, the Activity worked with the Integrated BioEnergy Systems (TBS) Activity of TEA Bioenergy Task XIII to enhance the BioEnergy Assessment Model (BEAM). This model is documented in the final report of the IBS Activity. The Systems Studies Activity contributed to enhancing the feedstock portion of the model by developing a coherent set of willow, poplar, and switchgrass production modules relevant to both the US and the UK. The Activity also developed a pretreatment module for switchgrass. Second, the Activity sponsored a three-day workshop on modeling bioenergy systems with the objectives of providing …

Fast Access Data Acquisition System (open access)

Fast Access Data Acquisition System

Our goal in this program is to develop Fast Access Data Acquisition System (FADAS) by combining the flexibility of Multilink's GaAs and InP electronics and electro-optics with an extremely high data rate for the efficient handling and transfer of collider experimental data. This novel solution is based on Multilink's and Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) unique components and technologies for extremely fast data transfer, storage, and processing.

Investigation of Transferred-Arc Cleaning for Thin Film Removal (open access)

Investigation of Transferred-Arc Cleaning for Thin Film Removal

Transferred-arc cleaning is being investigated as a precision cleaning method for thin films on electrically conducting substrates as well as the traditional cleaning and roughening pretreatment for LPPS. Transferred-arc cleaning of copper substrates has been studied to identify the effect of processing conditions on cleaning and roughening characteristics. A Box-Behnken response surface design experiment varying the chamber pressure, substrate standoff distance, and torch current while observing the transferred arc voltage, voltage fluctuation, current, emitted light, and surface cleanliness was performed. The result of the analysis show the effect of the various independent variables on the measured responses. Distinct stages in the cleaning process are identified by their sample cleanliness, voltage level, voltage fluctuation, emitted light, and erosion rate.

Development and implementation of seismic design and evaluation criteria for NIF (open access)

Development and implementation of seismic design and evaluation criteria for NIF

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is being built at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as an international research center for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This paper will provide an overview of NIF, review NIF seismic criteria, and briefly discuss seismic analyses of NIF optical support structures that have been performed by LLNL and the Ralph M. Parsons Company, the Architect and Engineer (A&E) for NIF. The NIF seismic design and evaluation criteria is based on provisions in DOE Standard 1020 (DOE-STD-1020), the Uniform Building Code (UBC), and the LLNL Mechanical Engineering Design Safety Standards (MEDSS). Different levels of seismic requirements apply to NIF structures, systems, and components (SSCs) based on their function. The highest level of requirements are defined for optical support structures and SSCs which could influence the performance of optical support structures, while the minimum level of requirements are Performance Category 2 (PC2) requirements in DOE-STD-1020. To demonstrate that the NIF seismic criteria is satisfied, structural analyses have been performed by LLNL and Parsons to evaluate the responses of optical support structures and other SSCs to seismic-induced forces.

Probing nano-defects in fused silica by near-field scanning optical microscopy (open access)

Probing nano-defects in fused silica by near-field scanning optical microscopy

Nanodefects were artificially introduced into fused silica surface by nano-indenting with a commercial atomic force microscope (AFM). The sample was illuminated at total internal refkction configuration and evanescent waves were detected by near-field scanning optical probe in the constant tip-sample separation mode. The strain fields associated with non-indents were attributed to the contrast mechanism in optical images. Thus the optical image directly maps out the strain distributions associated with these nano-indents. Optical images were taken at different polarizations of the incident light (s and p). Due to different field distributions near sample surface for the two polarizations, strain distributions at different depth can be probed. The spatial resolution of this technique is hmited by the probe aperture size and detector sensitivity. This technique may be a useful tool to study laser-induced damage mechanisms in optical materials in microscopic scale.
