The Chaconne and Passacaglia in Twentieth Century Organ Music
In order to trace the origin of the chaconne and passacaglia, the much larger classification of basso ostinato, of which the chaconne and passacaglia are two later examples, must be considered. According to one authority, Lili Propper, the earliest beginnings of the basso ostinato can be traced back to the Middle Ages through the use of organ points exemplified in organum purum. A later and more developed use of the basso ostinato can be discovered in the recurring basses of the Montpellier Codex and the masses of the fifteenth century. A freer manifestation of the idea can be found in the reiterated bass motive of the familiar canon, Sumer is icumen in.

The Effects of Two Approaches to Reading Instruction upon the Oral Language Development of First Grade Pupils
The problem of this study was to compare the relative gains made in the development of oral language skills in two groups of first grade pupils when two different approaches to beginning reading instruction were used. The two approaches were: (a) the language experience approach, Approach A, and (b) the traditional basal reader approach, Approach B. The six aspects of oral language development considered were: extent of verbalization, spoken vocabulary, expressions of tentativeness, use of structural patterns, colorful and vivid expressions, and use of mazes.

An Evaluation of a Guidance-Structured Summer Session for Entering University Freshmen
The problem of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a guidance-structured summer session for entering university freshmen. The performances of students entering this type of program were compared with those of students entering a traditional type of summer school. Inferences made relating to the contributions of a guidance-structured summer session to entering university freshmen were based on analyses of the following characteristics: (1) performance on standardized tests; (2) certain aspects relating to high school background; (3) academic achievement and retention at Texas A. and M. University; (4) fathers' attendance at Texas A. and M. University; and (5) fathers' occupations.

The Goals of the Peace Corps
Agencies such as the Peace Corps are by nature benevolent, which means they are devised for the expressed purpose of granting aid to other persons. In this case, the avowed purpose is aid for the underdeveloped nations of the world. However, politicians lodged in governmental authority are not humanistic solely for the sake of helping others; there are political aims to be gained. What these aims are and how they affect the operation of a youth corps for peace is a major concern of this thesis.

Mexican Military Movements in the Texas Revolution
"This thesis describes the art of logistics practiced by Santa-Anna and his staff in the marches from Northern Mexico to San Jacinto and Goliad, and the subsequent withdrawal. The method, or methods, employed to keep such an army in fighting condition are analyzed as it moved slowly and uncertainly across the desert and semi-desert areas, over burnt-out prairies and flooding rivers. To obtain the most complete picture of the Mexican army's movements and needs, the letters and diaries of the outstanding Mexican participants were used. Whenever possible American sources were studied to substantiate any seemingly questionable information in the Mexican accounts...As this thesis is primarily concerned with logistics, battles are not covered in detail. In cases where a conflict between American and Mexican sources exists concerning any phase of the Mexican military movements during the Texan revolution, both sides are presented, and an attempt made to evaluate them objectively." -- leaf x.

Organomagnesium Compounds in Benzene Solvent and Their Application in Synthesis of Organoberyllium Compounds
The work reported by D. Bryce-Smith and G. F. Cox, along with several recent publications describing experimental results designed to elucidate the long disputed question of the structure of the Grignard reagent in ether stimulated the work reported here, in an effort to obtain additional evidence of the structure of the organomagnesium complex in benzene solvent. Since the primary objective of this work was to prepare organoberyllium compounds using the organomagnesium complexes in hydrocarbon solvents, it seemed an insight into the structure of these complexes would be beneficial in this work. The techniques used and experimental evidence obtained from the structure elucidation of the ethereal Grignard reagent have been most helpful in organization of the methods used to study the structure of organomagnesium halide complexes in benzene solvent. It seemed that an insight into the structure of these organomagnesium halide complexes in hydrocarbon solvents would be beneficial in accomplishing the second objective of this work. This objective was to prepare organoberyllium compounds using the organomagnesium halide complexes prepared in hydrocarbon solvents.
