The problem of this study was to develop an instrument which would reveal whether certain fundamental philosophical and educational beliefs are held by public school teachers in the areas of elementary education, secondary education, and guidance.

It was Woodrow Wilson who played the dominant role in the Council of Four. With his dedication to the vague, often contradictory Fourteen Points, and with the power of the office of President of the United States supporting him, he determined the very nature of the treaty. Wilson's use, and misuse, of his influence over his colleagues makes him responsible for much of the final form of the Treaty of Versailles.

The problem of this study was the relationship between practices reported by American history teachers in selected Texas secondary schools and practices recommended by three groups of social studies authorities.

Copper(II) and oxovanadium(IV) ions resemble one another magnetically in having one unpaired electron in their complexes irrespective of their geometrical structures and bond types involved. Copper(II) complexes with antiferromagnetic exchange are well known. On the contrary, antiferromagnetic exchange in oxovanadium(IV) complexes is rather new and not well established. Very few oxovanadium(IV) complexes have been reported to have this anomalous magnetic property. In the investigation of the magnetic properties of oxovanadium(IV) complexes, we have successfully prepared two series of new oxovanadium(IV) complexes with N-salicylideneamino acids.

The major problem investigated was to ascertain the extent to which a training program designed specifically to increase frustration tolerance would reduce selected behavioral problems in institutionalized mentally retarded children. Of lesser importance was the problem of examining the extent to which the prescribed training program had differential effects on brain-injured and non-brain-injured retarded children.

Inasmuch as this investigator can determine, no major study has been done concerning music's relation to the "isms" selected for this discussion. The contemporary interest in the movements themselves has been so widespread that the documentation of them, in scattered accounts, is enormous. It is disappointing that these records provide little or no information about the musical aspects of the movements; the graphic and literary accounts, on the other hand, have been accorded generous treatments. Since futurism, cubism, and surrealism, in their origins, were oriented toward the visual and literary arts, it is not surprising that these two aspects would receive the greatest amount of attention. The meager attention to music and the distortion of its role in the movements, as has largely been the case, has created an artistic imbalance, This writer's efforts have been directed toward an exhaustive search for factors which have, in some way or other, linked music with these movements. Musical futurism has been the easiest to identify, although its underlying theories are not always clear, since the futurists, in explaining their theories, were not always convincing, perhaps even to themselves. The purpose of the present study of the herpetofauna was to obtain additional information regarding the vertebrates of Denton County, and to produce a well-preserved, cataloged collection of the amphibians and reptiles for the Museum of Zoology, North Texas State University. An understanding of the vertebrate life of the county also involves an investigation of the habitats within the county that may, in part, count for the distribution of these animals. It is well recognized that the environmental areas of the county have altered vastly during the last one hundred years. This alteration is due largely to agriculture and industry. However, there are adequate numbers of natural environments, as well as newly created ones that may contribute to the distribution of the vertebrates at the present time. Therefore, the problem not only concerned the collection of specimens, but also the identification, abundance classification, general habitat classifications, and county distribution.

There are seven schools in the United States and Canada that offer a training program for students qualified in art and the biological sciences to meet the visual communication requirements in medical education and research. A survey of each of these schools in relation to the medical illustration curriculum of North Texas State University will give a broader picture of the educational requirements, nature of work, qualifications of the candidate, and the outlines of the curricula in this field. From this survey a guidance program will be determined to prepare toe undergraduate student for admission to medical school. This investigation of each training program will provide a better understanding of the variances of the medical schools which have departments of art as applied to medicine.

The two basic needs which motivated this study were instructional material and instruments. By investigating these problems the writer hopes to improve not only his own techniques of teaching, but to present a useful source of information concerning the tuba. Analysis of the problem statement led to subordinate questions, or sub-problems, which may be stated as follows: 1. What do the authorities consider to be the desirable physical and mental characteristics in the tuba player? 2. How do the authorities teach the specific techniques of tuba performance. 3. What are the authorities' opinions concerning tubas and tuba mouthpieces? 4. What are the authorities' recommendations concerning instructional materials for tuba students?

Paul Hindemeith adheres to the traditional concept of using two trumpets in his orchestral brass section. The trumpet parts are notated in concert pitch on the score implying the use of the "c" trumpet, although in actual practice, the parts are often transposed and played on the B-flat trumpet by the performer.

This study traces the development of the baton conductor from his earliest origin up to and including the present day. From his initial role, that of a time beater and teacher, he has progressed to that of an interpreter and creator of music.

"Gethsemane to Calvary" is a sacred cantata for mixed voices and keyboard accompaniment. It is divided into six sections which are called parts. With the exception of part one which is a potpourri overture, the parts are divided into a variety of choral forms.

"Quintet for Woodwinds " is in four movements. The form of each movement is basically traditional: the first movement is in Sonata form; the second movement is a Theme and Variations; the third movement is a short Chorale; and the fourth movement is a Rondo. The themes of the movements are interrelated, giving a cynical effect.

Although many volumes concerning the life and works of Johannes Brahms have been written, it has been found that the majority of these writings treat the material of the subject in a rather poetic and romanticized fashion. This is especially unfortunate in those volumes where the works of Brahms are analyzed with pragmatic implications, since Brahms himself eschewed the use of extramusical elements in his composition. This investigation, therefore, is an attempt to present a careful analysis of one of these compositions, the Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115, for clarinet and string quartet.

The String Quartet is comprised of three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Vivace. The Allegro utilizes a monothematic Sonata Allegro form: the Adagio is through-composed, and the Vivace is a Rondo. All three movements feature a lean harmonic texture, much of the harmony resulting from linear movement, i.e. counterpoint.

In this thesis, Ned Rorem's Poems of Love and the Rain is analyzed, with conclusions being drawn in the sphere of musico-textual relationships within individual songs.

The Essay for Orchestra combines three contemporary styles of melodic writing into sonata form. The exposition contains three themes. The first theme is a twelve-tone row. Unlike the usual approach to serial writing, the row is used in its original form throughout the piece and is developed by rhythmic alterations. The theme never occurs in its inversion or retrograde. The second theme of the exposition illustrates a chromatic type of melody. The third theme in the exposition is constructed of ascending and descending leaps of perfect fourths interspersed with leaps of thirds and short scale lines. The constant use of this theme throughout the development section provides the composition with a melodic unity.

The purpose of the composition of the "Music for Chamber Band" is the creation of an extended work for an ensemble of solo wind instruments are treated as woodwind and brass quartets, with the percussion section, which requires four players, serving a subordinate function. The "Music for Chamber Band" is in three contrasting but thematically interrelated movements. The first movement, entitled "Lament," is marked "Slowly and simply" and has a mournful character. The second movement is fast and vigorous, frequently utilizing cross accents which give the impression of two or more meters performed simultaneously, and is entitled "Dance". The third movement, "Antiphon," is moderate in tempo and relaxed in nature. The form of the work as a whole can be likened to an arch which contains (or is made up of) three smaller arches.

This quartet shows the composer's development from a highly chromatic, freely melodic, un-serialized style in movement I, through a still free, but disjunct, somewhat more ordered style in movement II, to a style in movement III which makes much use of serial techniques. This last usage, however, no longer employs the twelve-tone method in a stiff and fettered manner.

A Psalm Fantasy is a cantata in three movements for mezzo-soprano or baritone soloist, chorus of mixed voices and orchestra. The orchestra comprises two flutes, oboe, English horn, two clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns in F, three trumpets in B-flat, three trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbals, xylophone, harp and strings.

What conclusions can be made concerning the interpretation of Felix Mendelssohn's unaccompanied choral music based on the compositional style of his music and an understanding of his musical attributes?

The purpose of this study was to determine the trends that are developing in the architecture of the civic, commercial, and religious buildings in Fort Worth, Texas. This will be shown by an analysis of what the author considers to be the best examples of buildings constructed in Fort Worth during the past ten years.

On November 24, 1964, the City Council of the City of Fort Worth approved a contract that read, in part: "The City of Euless and the City of Fort Worth desire to cooperate in the stationing of personnel and fire fighting apparatus of the City of Fort Worth in facilities owned and operated by the City of Euless..." An examination of the establishment of this contract is the purpose of this thesis.
