Smith was a publisher and journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her editorials in support of the civil rights movement, a stance which resulted in her ostracism from local white society and her newspaper's eventual bankruptcy. Aaronetta Pierce (referred to here as A. M. Pierce) passed this unpublished copy of the article on to Margaret Winn, president of the San Antonio chapter. Includes handwritten notes.

Letter from Thelma Rice to Mary H. Langford stating that she received Langford's letter about the appropriateness of The Links, Inc. holding an expensive gala during a time of economic hardship. Although she understands Langford's concerns, the gala is a tradition for which planning began several years ago. She is not sure whether plans for the gala can be altered at this point but will make sure her concerns are discussed with the national director.

Rice has enclosed three important documents to be shared among the members of every chapter: the new Western Area Handbook, the revised and updated Western Area By-Laws, and a copy of Rice's reply to a letter about concerns related to expenditures for a gala at the upcoming National Assembly.

Chapters are requested to send all required documentation, including a membership roster, officer list, bylaws, and taxation forms to the area director. Also, chapters should consider making donations to a number of funds, including a relief fund for victims of an earthquake in Oakland. Higgins suggests that because breast cancer rates are increasing in the general population chapters should plan a day for members to receive mammograms in lieu of a regular chapter meeting.

McCarroll sent this letter first class so that chapter presidents can announce the important information included therein at their February meetings. McCarroll is still recruiting members to serve on committees to help plan the upcoming area conference. The area also needs to nominate an honorary member to the national body; nomination requirements and procedures are described.

Memorandum from Lois A. Sayles to members of the Executive Council of The Links, Inc. Sayles is submitting the biographical profiles of candidates for national office. Includes a list of candidates who were nominated for office by chapters other than their own chapter as well as all of the profiles. The candidates for national president are Dolly D. Adams and Marion S. Sutherland. Thelma Hardiman is the only candidate for national vice president; Ruth Williams is the only candidate for secretary; and Leatrice Dodd is the only candidate for treasurer. Zola Boone and Mose Hooks are both at-large candidates. The candidates for the national nominating committee are Vivian Bell, Shirley Colvin, Etta Mae Dawson, Lettie Green, Clementyne Guy, Lulu Hardesty, Vera Hayes, Josephine Kennedy, Hazel Mapwell, Uarda Parnell, and Elizabeth Youngue.

Jones is announcing the creation of a new national day of observance to bring awareness to the need for improved self-esteem in black youths. Jones asks that each chapter help by either publicizing the Links' awareness campaign or planning an outreach event for the day. The day of observance will be April 5, 1992.

Memorandum from Gloria Massie to The Links, Inc.'s chapter chairpersons for publicity and public relations. Massie requests all public and public relations chairpersons information about the major media organizations and journalists in their cities.

Memorandum from Hazelle E. Boulware to the chapters and executive council of The Links, Inc. stating that the organization has expanded its youth services to include issues related to juvenile justice and delinquency.
