Investigation of Shinarump Channels on Oljetoh Mesa, Arizona - Utah (open access)

Investigation of Shinarump Channels on Oljetoh Mesa, Arizona - Utah

From to the files: The Shinarump-Moenkopi contact on Oljetoh Mesa in the Monument Valley district, Arizona-Utah, was examined from November 5 to 15, 1951, to determine the location of and the mineralization in Shinarump channels. Twenty-seven distinct channel outcrops were located and examined. Three of these channel outcrops are mineralized and the remaining 24 are barren. Plate I shows the distribution of the Shinarump, the Moenkopi, and the DeChelly member of the Cutler formation; the location of the Shinarmp channel outcrops; the channel trend where there is good evidence for such a trend. The Hoskinrnini tongue of the Cutler was mapped with the Moenkopi as it is not a good mappable unit in this area. The three mineralized outcrops are indicated by the letters A, G, and AA while the barren outcrops bear the letters B to F and H to Z.

Radioactivity at the Jim Kane Mine, Mohave County, Arizona (open access)

Radioactivity at the Jim Kane Mine, Mohave County, Arizona

Abstract: About 2,000 tons of low-grade lead ore has been produced from the Jim Kane mine, near Kingman, Mohave County, Ariz. A 3-foot vein of gouge and siderite stringers in pre-Cambrian gneiss contains some lead and, locally, is abnormally radioactive. A sample of the vein contained 0.067 percent uranium. Abnormal radioactivity is restricted to a small part of the vein, and no reserves are calculated.

Uraniferous Quartzite, Red Bluff Prospect, Gila County, Arizona (open access)

Uraniferous Quartzite, Red Bluff Prospect, Gila County, Arizona

Abstract: Radioactive zones are present in the upper silty part of the pre-Cambrian Dripping Spring quartzite at the Red Bluff prospect, Gila County, Ariz. The prospect is in the SE 1/4 sec. 31, T. 5 N., R. 14 E., at the southern end of the Sierra Ancha area and 12 miles northeast of Roosevelt Dam. Stratigraphic control of the radioactive zones is indicated by the restriction of the zones to two layers, each about 20 feet thick. The zones are spatially associated in part with a diabase dike that occupies a fault, and in part with a thick diabase sill. The main uranium mineral disseminated through the rock in these zones has not been identified definitely, although minor quantities of secondary uranium minerals were observed. The results of scintillometer traverses and radiometric analyses indicate that the deposits probably contain an average of 0.026 percent uranium. Some black streaks and some fractures contain a higher percentage of uranium, but so far as is known the volume of such material is probably too small to affect the overall grade of the deposits.

Evaluation of depleted uranium in the environment at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona. Final report (open access)

Evaluation of depleted uranium in the environment at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona. Final report

This report represents an evaluation of depleted uranium (DU) introduced into the environment at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG), Maryland and Yuma Proving Grounds (YPG) Arizona. This was a cooperative project between the Environmental Sciences and Statistical Analyses Groups at LANL and with the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. The project represents a unique approach to assessing the environmental impact of DU in two dissimilar ecosystems. Ecological exposure models were created for each ecosystem and sensitivity/uncertainty analyses were conducted to identify exposure pathways which were most influential in the fate and transport of DU in the environment. Research included field sampling, field exposure experiment, and laboratory experiments. The first section addresses DU at the APG site. Chapter topics include bioenergetics-based food web model; field exposure experiments; bioconcentration by phytoplankton and the toxicity of U to zooplankton; physical processes governing the desorption of uranium from sediment to water; transfer of uranium from sediment to benthic invertebrates; spead of adsorpion by benthic invertebrates; uptake of uranium by fish. The final section of the report addresses DU at the YPG site. Chapters include the following information: Du transport processes and pathway model; field studies of performance of exposure …
