A Guidance Program for North Texas State University Undergraduate Students Preparing for a Career in Medical Illustration (open access)

A Guidance Program for North Texas State University Undergraduate Students Preparing for a Career in Medical Illustration

There are seven schools in the United States and Canada that offer a training program for students qualified in art and the biological sciences to meet the visual communication requirements in medical education and research. A survey of each of these schools in relation to the medical illustration curriculum of North Texas State University will give a broader picture of the educational requirements, nature of work, qualifications of the candidate, and the outlines of the curricula in this field. From this survey a guidance program will be determined to prepare toe undergraduate student for admission to medical school. This investigation of each training program will provide a better understanding of the variances of the medical schools which have departments of art as applied to medicine.

The Administration of the Guidance Program for Secondary Schools (open access)

The Administration of the Guidance Program for Secondary Schools

An attempt will be made to answer these questions: (1) Why is a guidance program necessary? (2) What steps are being taken to accomplish the objectives set forth? (3) What is considered the best method of instituting a guidance program? In answering these questions a study of the guidance programs in a few of the leading cities and states of the United States has been taken into consideration. The best possible method or combination of methods will be recommended. This method will be compared with the program of guidance now in operation in the Waco High School, Waco, Texas.

Test Anxiety and Performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (open access)

Test Anxiety and Performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

Although the significance of anxiety has long been recognized and explored within the framework of psychoanalysis, it was not until after World War II that it began to influence research in psychology. The manipulation of anxiety as a research variable has taken place both within and without the framework of psychoanalytic theory. The primary purpose of the present study was to determine the relationship between test anxiety, as determined by scores on the TASC, and performance on the Wechsler Intelliaence Scale for Children. TASC scores were compared to Verbal Scale, Performance Scale, Full Scale, and individual subtest scores on the WISC.

Effects of Manifest Anxiety Upon a Measure of Memory Span (open access)

Effects of Manifest Anxiety Upon a Measure of Memory Span

This study will attempt to verify the Hullian drive theory, E = f(HxD), as others have done before, but with one exception. The H, or habit strength, will be held to be neutral so that the E, or excitatory potentials, will be a function of drive alone. Without any habit to reinforce, any increase in excitatory potential can be related directly to increase in drive. Four hypotheses were investigated: The first hypothesis was that the HA, or high-anxiety groups, will also be the high-drive groups, and this will follow for the NA and LA groups, to be determined by the performance on the digit-span test. The second hypothesis was that the high-drive groups will perform better on the digit-span tests than the low-drive groups. The third hypothesis stressed that in accordance with Hullian theory, with increased stress being introduced with a single habit tendency, the low-drive groups will be outperformed by the high-drive groups. The fourth hypothesis presumed that verification of the first three hypotheses will show the "Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale" to be capable of differentiating between high and low manifest anxiety groups and will verify the Taylor-Spence hypothesis based on Hullian theory that the HA's will outperform the …

Anxiety Levels of Creative, Performing Musicians (open access)

Anxiety Levels of Creative, Performing Musicians

The term creativity will be used in this paper to denote the unique imposition of the personality upon, in this case, the instrument selected and the work performed. The result of the creativity, the performance, is in the indefinable but, to a competent judge, readily recognizable area of true artistry, and represents, at best, a spontaneity resulting from interaction with unconscious processes after the conscious mastery of the technical problems of the particular instrument. For the purposes of this study, May's definition of anxiety is as good and workable as any: "Anxiety is the apprehension cued off by a threat to some value which the individual holds essential to his existence as a personality. In the case of the musician, the threatened value is his desire (and necessity, in terms of his self concept) to pursue music as a career. When his career is threatened or depreciated, the result is anxiety, which manifests itself in various forms of irrational behavior, physical symptoms, and inadequate adjustments to everyday situations.

In order to measure these relationships, Rokeach's Dogmatism Scale, Cattell's IPAT Self Analysis Form, and Bill's Index of Adjustment and Values were utilized, Sex differences, as measured on the Dogmatism Scale, were also investigated.

Maladjustment and the Distortion of Self-Perception (open access)

Maladjustment and the Distortion of Self-Perception

Contemporary psychology has shown an increasing interest in the self-concept of the individual. This interest has grown in large measure from studies of perception. Many theorists have felt that perception in general and self-perception in particular is a function of the needs of the organism, as well as a function of the external stimuli. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the relationships between distortions in self-perception and total level of adjustment in a population of college students.

A Comparison of the Self-Concepts of Negroes and Jews (open access)

A Comparison of the Self-Concepts of Negroes and Jews

The purpose of this study was to compare self-concepts of Negroes and Jews. The historical background conditions influencing the development of the Jews and Negroes are beyond the scope of this work and are therefore mentioned only incidentally. Two aspects of these two groups are under consideration: (1) How well or poorly do Jews and Negroes function in contemporary American society? (2) What sort of family life is characteristic of Jews and Negroes? These two aspects are considered important in connection with self-concepts, for the first is at least in part a manifestation of the self-concept, and family life is considered important as the major factor in the development of the self-concept. The self-concept and its development are treated more fully in a later part of this paper.

The Comparative Effectiveness of Conventional and Programed Instructional Procedures in Teaching Fundamentals of Music (open access)

The Comparative Effectiveness of Conventional and Programed Instructional Procedures in Teaching Fundamentals of Music

The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of three out-of-class procedures designed to augment a conventional classroom instructional method in a course in the fundamentals of music for elementary education students. The procedures examined were (a) conventional out-of-class study assignments; (b) out-of-class individual use of a programed textbook; and (c) out-of- class individual use of a teaching machine program. This study was concerned with measures of achievement in fundamentals of music as taught to elementary education students at North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, during the 1963-1964 school year. The measures of achievement in music were limited to the pre-test of fundamentals of music and to the post test, interim test, and retention test of fundamentals of music.
