This investigation involved the production of specific antisera against known International Streptomyces project strains of Streptomyces.

This thesis describes the present nature of one facet of some of the flood plain forest stands in Denton County, Texas. The specific purpose was to demonstrate the presence or absence of difference between the Celtis laevigata (commonly known as the hackberry, southern hackberry or sugarberry) populations in stands on Denton Creek and Elm Fork of the Trinity River.

In this study organisms that can be subcultured from lake water, using a prescribed procedure, limit, to an extent, the population, or portions of the population, that can be monitored. In essence, what is taking place is that a set of conditions is set forth and a study is made of the bacteria that will grow under these prescribed conditions.

The purpose then of this paper has been to expand our knowledge of these aquatic forms by investigating the cultural, physiological, morphological, and chemical characteristics of an actinomycete isolated from the water supply, Lake Waco, of Waco, Texas.

This study was designed to show what dissemules may be carried by selected genera of Odonata, where the dissemules may be predominantly carried on the selected insects and to relate the behavior of the selected Odonata to frequency of occurrence of micro-organisms on the insects.

The purpose of this study was (1) to measure the changes in water flux in isolated roots exposed to n-DSA and its mono-methly ester (m-MDSA) using a photometric technique in the absence of an externally applied suction and (2) to measure the flux of Na and K in similarly treated roots using a flame photometric method.

The express purpose for doing this project was to develop methods for the continuous culture of E. coli and P. aeruginosa as a mixed population, and to apply these methods in studying the effects of pH and substrate upon the growth of these two organisms in mixed continuous culture.

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the effects of x-irradiation on the efflux of potassium, sodium and calcium ions from stimulated and unstimulated desheathed sciatic nerves.

The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to present experimental data on changes in permeability of fibers during irradiation using Na22 as the tracer isotope, and 2) to attempt to correlate these findings with the electrical changes observed.

Due to the relatively small amount of work concerning radiation, it was thought feasible to use ionizing radiation as a tool to study the relationship between water and salt flux in isolated root systems. Moreover, the more quantitative potometric method lends itself well to such a study, since the two processes can be followed simultaneously. the aims of this study, therefore, were 1) to determine effects of X-irradiation on water, calcium and potassium flux in excised onion roots; 2) to determine the dose levels required for producing permeability changes; 3) to investigate the nature of radiation damage to root systems; and 4) to attempt to shed light on the relation between water transport and ion movement in root systems.

This study was undertaken in order to determine whether the extracts of common garden vegetables could be incorporated into simple, economical culture media which might be used for the growth and cultivation of at least some of the more commonly used microorganisms.

The Amistad Reservoir in southern Val Verde County, Texas will impound a considerable amount of surface water in a semi-arid region in which natural surface water is scarce. Construction of the dam began in 1963 and the reservoir began to fill in the summer of 1968. This large impoundment could have a considerable ecological impact on the area. The purpose of this research was to study the ecological distribution and zoogeographic affinities of the herpetofauna and to establish an ecological baseline against which any future changes could be measured.

It is the purpose of this thesis to evaluate a few selected gas chromatographic materials for the separation of odorants produced by an actinomycete culture under laboratory conditions. Also to compare the results obtained with concentrated solutions of a surface water containing similar odors under natural conditions.

Investigations concerning the cellular response of tumor tissue to treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide and hematoxylin have not been reported. To establish the response of neoplastic tissue and cells to this combination of agents, this study was undertaken to determine the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide and hematoxylin on a transplantable lymphosarcoma in mice.

It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the variation of glyoxalase activity in liver of normal mice and in the liver of mice bearing a lymphosarcoma and to compare the glyoxalase activity of the lymphosarcoma with values previously reported in the literature for other tumor types. Further, if there is indeed a variation in liver glyoxalase activity between normal and tumor-bearing mice, it will be compared to the variation in the activity of two other enzymes present in liver tissue in relatively high concentration.

The purposes of this paper are 1) to determine the microbiotic cycles which occur in Lake Hefner in order to form a basis for ascertaining the effects of future additions of evaporation control chemicals on the biological life of this reservoir, and 2) to make a generalization as to the microbiotic cycles which might occur in Southwestern reservoirs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of substrate levels and different types of substrates on population changes of mixed cultures of Serratia marcescens and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as compared to pure cultures.

The objective of the work reported in this paper is one of a two-fold nature. The first objective is to develop a disk-plate sensitivity test that is more rapid than that of existing methods. The second requisite is that the materials, techniques, interpretation, and reporting of results be the sane as those required for the disk-plate method described in the Difco Manual.

It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to confirm the work of Schlagenhauf and Ingebrigsten and to show the effects of repeated injections of guinea pig serum immunized with various strains of mouse leukemia.

This thesis is a serological investigation of actinomycetes as a preliminary to taxonomic study.
