Collaborative Research: Diversifying Human-Centered Data Science through the Research and Design of Ethical Games

This project studies collaborative learning in a virtual setting for groups of peers with conflicting methodological cultures and diverse backgrounds. An additional artifact of this two-year, interdisciplinary project will be a prototype of an educational game, targeted towards the underrepresented communities and the greater public, that will bring more people into critical conversations about the roles of AI and data science in our society. The primary aim of this research is the production of novel theories in learning sciences regarding collaborative learning in the face of diverse backgrounds and cultural norms.

Raise Up Radio: Family and Youth Engagement in Library Supported Learning Via Radio

Data management plan for the grant "Raise Up Radio: Family and Youth Engagement in Library Supported Learning Via Radio." The University of North Texas and the University of Alabama, in partnership with the Pottsboro Area Library and the Tuscaloosa Public Library, will develop a program called "Raise Up Radio: Family and Youth Engagement in Library Supported Learning Via Radio" to address educational inequities that became even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic and create a professional network of librarians who use radio broadcasts. Over two years, six libraries serving high-need rural communities in Texas and Alabama will each implement a total of four, five-week educational programs delivered over local radio stations. The program will leverage existing community resources to create accessible educational content through collaborative partnerships. It will connect libraries, museums, and educational institutions with students in rural communities through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. Local youth and families will develop these new radio programs using best practices for equitable youth and family engagement in learning. Knowledge Representation and Subject Access in Electronic Theses and Dissertations: Analysis of Creators’ and Users’ Assumptions and Expectations

This paper analyzes the relationship between subject terms -- both authorized terms from controlled vocabularies and free-text keywords -- used to succinctly describe the content of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) and the search terms entered by users to discover and access the ETDs. Identification of search terms and comparison of search results with subject terms used in describing ETDs provides a basis for assessing the relative usefulness of controlled-vocabulary subject terms supplied by professional indexers and free-text keywords supplied by authors of ETDs in facilitating access to ETDs. Arguably, there has been a shift in the way users search, access, and use information resources.

Organization of knowledge and information in digital archives of language materials (open access)

Organization of knowledge and information in digital archives of language materials

This article reports the first empirical investigation of various dimensions of organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information in language archives. The study used a combination of semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results demonstrate that, while some of the phenomena related to organization of information in language archives are specific to these types of archives, others are more typical and have been addressed by libraries in past research and practice.

Strategies for Increasing Findabilitiy of Language Data

Poster discussing practical methods for ensuring the quality of descriptive metadata associated with linguistic datasets in language archive deposits. Digital language archives are valuable tools for facilitating language revitalization, providing data on lesser-known languages, and supporting reproducibility of research and development of linguistic theory, though their potential remains unrealized as the data available in language archives are rarely accessed by linguists or language communities. Reasons for this under-utilization are the issues with data standardization and metadata quality. Including basic grammatical and typological information would allow wider audiences to reach the material.

Cross-Language Comparison of Mismatched Annotation in Interlinear-Glossed Texts

This presentation explores the variation in interlinear-glossed text (IGT) in 5 closely related South-Central Tibeto-Burman languages with verb stem alternation, reduplicated adverbial modifiers, and pre-verbal directionals. While IGT is a rich representation of language, IGT for even closely related languages can look markedly different due to individual linguists’ divergent analyses. In comparing the discrepancies between representations of such features, we gain insight into the underlying analytic thinking of the annotator to reexamine and improve analyses.

Investigation of Descriptive Richness of Free-Text Metadata in Language Archives

This presentation introduces language archives and analyzes item‐level metadata in three of them by focusing on free‐text metadata: the Endangered Language Archive, Pacific Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures, and the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America. Preparing Linguists’ Field Recordings and Datasets for Ingest into a Digital Library System: Lessons from Creating the Lamkang Language Resource at the University of North Texas Digital Library

Presentation on the long term preservation of and universal access to language data which may tap into typologically rare phenomena and which represents the intangible and irreplaceable heritage of indigenous communities. This language data can be in the form of audio, video, picture, and various digital formats. In order to prepare the source files of a documentation project for ingest to a digital library, linguists and digital librarians must develop a common procedure that takes into consideration (1) provenance and varying formats of materials and (2) necessary metadata specific to linguistic datasets.

Excrescent vowels in Lamkang prefix sequences

Article examines the nature of the super-short vowel-like segments between the C- prefixes of the Lamkang language by combining acoustic analysis with speakers' intuitions about syllable structure. The authors argue that an accurate phonetic description of Lamkang vowels must include these super-short vowels, as well as long and short vowels, which are phonemically distinct.
