Homologues and homology and their related terms in phylogenetic systematics (open access)

Homologues and homology and their related terms in phylogenetic systematics

Article describes how, in the field of phylogenetic systematics, the terms homology and homologue and their relationship to cladistic terms such as character, character state, synapomorphy and symplesiomorphy, as well as their relationships to each other, have been and are still discussed frequently. A recent re-emergence of concepts of homology/homologue free of any reference to explanatory hypotheses prompted the authors to explore these concepts and their relationships to each other as well as to the concept of morpheme, as introduced recently.

Inhaled diesel exhaust particles result in microbiome‑related systemic inflammation and altered cardiovascular disease biomarkers in C57Bl/6 male mice (open access)

Inhaled diesel exhaust particles result in microbiome‑related systemic inflammation and altered cardiovascular disease biomarkers in C57Bl/6 male mice

Article discusses the authors' investigation the hypothesis that exposure to inhaled diesel exhaust particles alters the gut microbiome and promotes microbial-related inflammation and cardiovascular disease biomarkers. To determine whether probiotics could prevent diet or DEP exposure mediated alterations in the gut microbiome or systemic outcomes, a subset of animals on the HF diet were treated orally with 0.3 g/day (~ 7.5 × 108 CFU/day) of Winclove Ecologic® Barrier probiotics throughout the study.

Insights into the Bioinformatics and Transcriptional Analysis of the Elongator Complexes (ELPs) Gene Family of Wheat: TaELPs Contribute to Wheat Abiotic Stress Tolerance and Leaf Senescence

Article states that elongator complexes (ELPs) are the protein complexes that promote transcription through histone acetylation in eukaryotic cells and interact with elongating RNA polymerase II. ELPs’ role in plant growth and development, signal transduction, and response to biotic and abiotic stresses have been confirmed in model plants, but the functions of the wheat ELP genes are not well documented. The present study identified 18 members of the ELPs from the wheat genome with a homology search.

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age)

Authors of the article sought to examine the effectiveness of an acute prolonged exercise session on post-exercise executive function in physically active adults and to assess if age or pre-exercise cognitive performance was predictive of the magnitude of change in executive task performance. Their results support the effectiveness of a single prolonged exercise bout to augment executive function in physically active adults, irrespective of age.

In vivo Evaluation of Non-viral NICD Plasmid-Loaded PLGA Nanoparticles in Developing Zebrafish to Improve Cardiac Functions

This article presents a study with the purpose to deliver a Notch Intracellular Domain (NICD)-encoded plasmid via poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles and to investigate the toxic environmental side effects for an in vivo experiment. This research demonstrates that PLGA nanoparticle-mediated target delivery to upregulate Notch related genes can be a potential therapeutic approach with minimum toxic effects.

Visualization of Lipid Droplet Composition by Direct Organelle Mass Spectrometry

Article reporting an approach that combines the visualization of individual lipid droplets (LDs), microphase extraction of lipid components from droplets, and the direct identification of lipid composition by nanospray mass spectrometry, even to the level of a single LD. The triacylglycerol (TAG) composition of LDs from several plant sources (mature cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) embryos, roots of cotton seedlings, and Arabidopsis thaliana seeds and leaves) were examined by direct organelle mass spectrometry and revealed the heterogeneity of LDs derived from different plant tissue sources.
