PAR Loop Schedule Review (open access)

PAR Loop Schedule Review

The schedule for the installation of the PAR slurry loop experiment in the South Facility of the ORR has been reviewed and revised. The design, fabrication, and installation is approximately two weeks behind schedule at this time due to many factors; however, indications are that this time can be made up. Design is estimated to be 56 per cent complete, fabrication 27 per cent complete-and installation 11 per cent complete:

H.E.W. - 300 Area - Metal turnings - Fire hazard

This memorandum discusses means to extinguish magnesium fires in metal turnings at the Hanford Engineer Works 300 Area. The storage of metal turnings in 55 gallon drums presented a fire hazard, for which an effective means for extinguishing the fire had not been presented. This memorandum is dated July 1943. (JL)

Classified information required by operators and others exposed to radiation hazards (open access)

Classified information required by operators and others exposed to radiation hazards

Information required by operators exposed to radiation hazards is discussed. All areas of the plant are subjected to radiation hazards similar to those in the radium industry. Personnel in these areas are required to wear pencil meters and special badges that are evidently not solely for identification. They are required to submit to medical examinations more stringent and frequent than usual. They are required to wear heavy gloves in one location, thin gloves in another, disposable hats or rubbers in another. They are required to stay away from familiar objects that they could handle a few days before. They observe health instrument men making readings at points not tangibly influenced by the operations. Under these circumstances, operators cannot perform their duties intelligently without being advised of the general nature of the risks involved. Since the general beta and gamma hazard occurs at nearly all points and cannot reasonably be concealed, this is the feature selected for general information. The special hazard of 105 Building can then be concealed, and the origin, but not the nature of the hazard in 231 likewise concealed.

Corrosion of Tuballoy-Molybdenum Alloys by Water (open access)

Corrosion of Tuballoy-Molybdenum Alloys by Water

The primary purpose of the corrosion work was to find a tuballoy alloy which would be sufficiently corrosion resistant to be useful for canned slugs even if some of the can were to leak. The secondary purpose was to obtain general corrosion data on tuballoy alloys.

History of operations, 1 January 1944--20 March 1945

The objectives of Hanford operations are the production of sufficient quantities of plutonium and secondary products in time to meet adequately military requirements at the lowest cost of manpower, money, and materials commensurate with the maximum degree of certainty in attaining the objectives. The facilities operations at Hanford are described.

Questions on the toxicity and behavior of product in the body (open access)

Questions on the toxicity and behavior of product in the body

This May 1945 report deals with how best to estimate the toxicity of ``Product`` to workers at Clinton Laboratories. Discussed are the issues of how toxic product is relative to radium, methods of analysis of product in the body, means of elimination from and distribution of product within the body, and what therapeutic measures are available. The principal concern of the author is that of protection of personnel who regularly handle in the laboratory large amounts of this material.

The medical applications of radioactive tracers (open access)

The medical applications of radioactive tracers

This report provides a broad yet in depth overview of the use of radioactive materials as tracers in medicine and biology for the period of 1935--1947. Particular attention is paid to is of radio-sodium, radio-iodine, radio-iron, radio-phosphorus, radio-strontium, and fission products. The main thrust of this paper is human rather than animal work and focuses in work that has been published.

Calorimetry research progress report, March 1--31,, 1948

Sixty-eight samples were assayed. The 5 calorimeters of type 30 were finished. Calorimeter 36, whose construction has been started, is an improved version of 30. A system of switches has been devised. A simple, fast, insensitive calorimeter for measuring high activity samples is being tested. The calculations on the half-life of postum were checked.

The changes in the blood of humans chronically exposed to low level gamma radiation (open access)

The changes in the blood of humans chronically exposed to low level gamma radiation

Ten individuals received an average of 0.211 roentgens of gamma radiation per week for a 77 period week (December 1946-June 1948) for a total average dose of 16.21 roentgens. During this period these 10 men carried out an experiment involving materials which emit gamma radiation and were monitored by daily film badges. The radiation delivered during a week was received in a five day work week and usually they received approximately one-half of their weekly dosage during one of the five days. A significant fall in total white blood count and absolute neutrophil and lymphocytes count was observed during the 77 week period. The degree of fall in counts would not have been predicted from experimental irradiation in animals and so other unknown factors may have been causal agents. It is suggested that hematological and exposure data from other laboratories be analyzed statistically to confirm or disprove the effect of such low- dosages of ionizing radiation on humans.

The general points being considered in the construction of equipment for the production of High Level Postum Gauzes were mentioned in the last progress report. A more detailed discussion of the progress to date will be made here. The development work of plating postum out of hydrofluoric acid has proceeded to the point where it is desired to make some runs plating out quantities of postum from 10--250 units per gauze. The following points have been considered in a report for limited distribution.
