Removal of H/sub 2/S from geothermal steam. Semi-annual report, April 1-October 31, 1975 (open access)

Removal of H/sub 2/S from geothermal steam. Semi-annual report, April 1-October 31, 1975

The program objective is to identify and evaluate a technique to remove hydrogen sulfide from geothermal steam before it is used for power generation. The last six months were spent in the literature search, sorbent preparation and evaluation, and construction of an experimental apparatus. Zn0, mentioned in the original proposal as a good candidate for H/sub 2/S adsorption, was verified as such by the literature search and laboratory experiments. However, regeneration of sulfided sorbent proved to be difficult. The interests were, then, switched to formulating sorbents made of mixtures of different kinds of metal oxides. At present, two sorbents were formulated which, when evaluated with a gas adsorption apparatus in the laboratory, possess better H/sub 2/S adsorption-regeneration capabilities than Zn0 or sorbents obtained from catalyst manufacturers. Large-scale gas adsorption equipment for use with simulated geothermal steam has been designed, built and shakedown operation of the equipment is in progress.

Thermal hydraulic evaluation of advanced wire-wrapped assemblies (open access)

Thermal hydraulic evaluation of advanced wire-wrapped assemblies

The thermal-hydraulic analyses presented in this report are based on application of the subchannel concept in association with the use of bulk parameters for coolant velocity and coolant temperature within a subchannel. The interactions between subchannels are due to turbulent interchange, pressure-induced diversion crossflow, directed sweeping crossflow induced by the helical wire wrap, and transverse thermal conduction. The FULMIX-II computer program was successfully developed to perform the steady-state temperature predictions for LMFBR fuel assemblies with the reference straight-start design and the advanced wire-wrap designs. Predicted steady-state temperature profiles are presented for a typical CRBRP 217-rod wire-wrapped assembly with the selected wire-wrap designs.

GTF test program (open access)

GTF test program

The goal of the GTF (Geothermal Test Facility) Test Program is to evaluate the geothermal resources in the Niland area and determine if they can be effectively converted into electric power. This program will examine the four critical areas of geothermal power development: (I) reservoir analysis, (II) energy extraction and conversion, (III) environmental effects, and (IV) operation and maintenance. These areas are discussed and a detailed test program is presented.

Nuclear fusion systems analysis research. FY 1975 annual report, 1 July 1974--30 June 1975 (open access)

Nuclear fusion systems analysis research. FY 1975 annual report, 1 July 1974--30 June 1975

This report summarizes research conducted during FY 1975 on the parametric systems analysis of fusion central power stations. As described in the report the methodology being pursued provides for a phased analysis starting with simple ''nominal'' parameters and associated computer codes and progressing to more complex functional models and then to physically based mathematical models for the systems of major significance in future power station viability. The nominal parameter analysis for preliminary screening only derives from consideration of extant reactor point designs and defines a nominal 5000 MWt reactor with either a 900 or 1250 K peak blanket coolant temperature. Functionalized performance and cost models are described for helium Brayton cycle, steam Rankine cycle and binary cycle electric power generation systems.

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Eleventh Quarterly Progress Report (open access)

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Eleventh Quarterly Progress Report

Progress is reported for a program to demonstrate by 1976 an experimental gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1978 Federal Emissions Standards, has significantly improved fuel economy, and is competitive in performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, standard size American automobile. NASA completed initial heat balance testing of a baseline engine. An additional 450 hours were run on ceramic regenerators and seals. Seal wear rates are very good, and the elastomeric mounting system was satisfactory. An engine/control oil supply system based on the power steering pump is successfully operating in baseline vehicles. The design of the upgraded engine power turbine nozzle actuator was finalized, and layouts of the inlet guide vane actuator are in process. A lock-up torque converter was installed in the free rotor vehicle. Baseline engine and vehicle testing of water injection and variable inlet guide vanes was completed. A thermal analysis of the gas generator is in process. A steady-state, full power analysis was made. A three-dimensional stress analysis of the compressor cover was made. The power turbine nozzle actuating system layout was completed. The analytical studies of the power turbine rotor bearings were completed. MTI completed the design of …

Modeling of solar heating and air conditioning. Progress report, October 31, 1974--December 31, 1975

The principal objective of the research is to develop the means to identify and optimize practical systems for heating and cooling of buildings with solar energy in the United States. This will be done through simulation methods. Secondary objectives are to: extend and refine TRNSYS (a modular solar energy system simulation program); develop the means of supporting TRNSYS users in other laboratories; use TRNSYS (and other simulation programs) to develop design procedures for solar heating and cooling processes; design and evaluate an experimental solar heating system on a Wisconsin farm residence.
