Research on human genetics in Iceland. Progress report (open access)

Research on human genetics in Iceland. Progress report

Records of the Icelandic Population are being used to investigate the possible inheritance of disabilities and diseases as well as other characters and the effect of environment on man. The progress report of research covers the period 1977 to 1980. The investigation was begun in 1965 by the Genetical Committee of the University of Iceland and the materials used are demographic records from the year 1840 to present and various medical information. The records are being computerized and linked together to make them effective for use in hereditary studies.

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF CLAD UO$sub 2$ IN POTENTIAL MELTDOWN ENVIRONMENTS. (open access)

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF CLAD UO$sub 2$ IN POTENTIAL MELTDOWN ENVIRONMENTS.

Behavior of zirconium alloy clad UO{sub 2} fuel elements in steam and air at 100 deg C to the melting point of UO{sub 2} was studied. Heating tests of Zircaloy-4 tubes with internal pressure show that steam oxidation of the metal results in lower deformation rates, less deformation, and higher failure temperature. Air oxidation of Zircaloy-4 is erratic and occurs at a greater rate than in steam due to the reaction with N in the air. Rate-controlling mechanism for UO{sub 2} oxidation by steam is the diffusion of O through UO{sub 2+x} lattice. The air oxidation rate of 304 stainless steel is about 10{sup 3} times less than the rate in steam up to 1370 deg C due to excess CR{sub 2}O{sub 3} film formation. During steam oxidation, the film provides less protection because of its spinel structure. Tensile strength of annealed 304 L decreased from 0.66 kg/mm{sup 2} at room temperature to 0.86 kg/mm{sup 2} at 1375 deg C. Thermal conductivity increased with temperature. The spectral emittance of Zircaloy-4 varied. Solution of O in the metal during prolonged heating caused spectral and total emittance to approach the values of the unoxidized metal. (F.S.)

SNAP Radioisotope Space Programs Quarterly Progress Report No. 9, October 1 Through December 31, 1961

All Phase I and Phase II testing was completed. Both launches of Phase I were successful, neither Phase II launches were successful. Test data recovered on Phase I launchings included optical coverage of re-entry and the trajectory and weather data; no telemetry canister temperature data were obtained. No test data were obtained on Phase II experiments. Reduction of Phase I test data was begun. The Phase II (Sub-subtask 7.3.2) was terminated December 20, 1961, when no test data were recovered for comparison with the analytically predicted results. The Sub-subtask 7.3.3 program (Generator Re-entry Burnup Study) was completed and terminated December 29, 1961. The study objectives were met. The Sub-subtask 7.3.4 program (High Altitude Sampling) was terminated when it was completed November 30, 1961. All study objectives were met. Topical reports were prepared on Sub-subtasks on the work performed in the reporting period that was not included in the topical reports is included. Checkout and troubleshooting operations on the last two subroutines and main radioisotope shielding code were completed. Results from several runs of a simple check problem compared well with published data. (auth)

Study on reduction of accessory horsepower requirements. Eighth quarterly progress report (open access)

Study on reduction of accessory horsepower requirements. Eighth quarterly progress report

This is the eighth quarterly technical progress report for a program in which the objective is to evolve and define an accessory drive system that will minimize system power consumption of driven accessories on an internal combustion engine in a passenger automobile. The initial program phases established concept feasibility, determined potential fuel savings, and selected a drive system design for concept mechanization. The current Phase IV carries the program through prototype fabrication and bench, engine, and vehicle tests. The final program objective is a detail drive system design and a demonstrated overall vehicle fuel savings potential. The major technical accomplishments during this reporting period were: the test vehicle was successfully driven to and from Ann Arbor, Michigan from Phoenix with the drive system installed; accessory drive hardware was calibrated, disassembled and reviewed for wear after round trip from Phoenix to Ann Arbor, Michigan; MADS governor performance was analyzed and parameters were varied to demonstrate flexibility available in modifying accessory drive input/output characteristics; and a task list that matched smaller, lower cost accessory components, with the accessory drive equipped vehicle, was prepared. Major emphasis during the remainder of the program will be in this area. (LCL)

Experimental development of nuclear pumped laser candidate inertial confinement fusion driver (open access)

Experimental development of nuclear pumped laser candidate inertial confinement fusion driver

This progress report is submitted at the end of the first year of a 3-year project grant studying development of a nuclear pumped atomic iodine laser. The first section of the report will provide background on the study and briefly describe the original plans for the 3-year project. The second section will detail the work done to date. Included will be a description of the preparations made for experimentation, as well as some preliminary results recently obtained. Plans for the upcoming budget year are covered in the accompanying proposal, Project Plans for 1989--1990.''

FAST BREEDER REACTOR THERMOCOUPLE DEVELOPMENT. (open access)

FAST BREEDER REACTOR THERMOCOUPLE DEVELOPMENT.

Studies of very high-temperature thermocouple characteristics for instrumentation and electrical components used in fast breeder reactors showed that the thermoelectric emf produced along BeO, HfO{sub 2}, or ThO{sub 2} insulators can affect the output of the thermoelements. Bare-wire thermocouples are influenced by environment. Radiation effects on W versus W - Re thermocouples in the ORR after ~ 2 months in a 1.2 x 10{sup 14}n/cm{sup 2}-sec thermal and 2.1 x 10{sup 13}n/cm{sup 2}-sec fast flux indicate that W and W - Re thermoelements shift similarly in thermal emf, resulting in a positive error of 5 deg C. Hafnates such as CaHfO{sub 3}, SrHfO{sub 3}, and SrZrO{sub 3} were found to be inferior to BeO and HfO{sub 2} as thermocouple insulating materials. (F.S.)

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF Fe--Cr--Al-CLAD FUEL SYSTEMS. (open access)

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF Fe--Cr--Al-CLAD FUEL SYSTEMS.

Reactions which can occur between oxidation-resistant Fe - CR - AL base alloys and UO{sub 2} at 500 to 1200 deg C are discussed. Aluminum in the Fe - Cr - Al-base cladding reduces the UO{sub 2} in the cermet fuels at 1000 to 1200 deg C. The U dissolves and diffuses through the cladding and is converted to an oxide. Oxygen combines with Al forming Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} which inhibits Al diffusion into the UO{sub 2}. The diffusion for Al in Cr leads to the development of a Cr barrier and reduces the Al - UO{sub 2} interaction and eliminates surface contamination. Free U as substoichiometric UO{sub 2-x} diffuses through 0.38 mm cladding within 100 hrs at 1000 deg C or in 6 hrs at 1200 deg C. At 1000 deg C, U solubility in Fe - Cr - Al-base alloy is 0.1 to 0.2% and its diffusion coefficient is in the range of 10{sup -9} to 10{sup -10} cm{sup 2}/cm. (F.S.)
