Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report

The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or auxiliary power units (APUs) in a standard passenger automobile. As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load requirements and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has beeen established. This vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250 to 350 cubic inch) displacement, spark ignition engine. Accessories to be considered are the alternator, power steering system, power brakes, air conditioner, cooling fan, water pump and emission control air pump. A program summary of major accomplishments is presented including: accessory drive devices analyses; vehicle computer model fuel economy analyses; improved accessory efficiency analysis; resized engine fuel economy analysis; accessory evaluation matrix completed; drive-systems trade-study completed and the prime concept presented; and variable-speed belt-drive concepts reviewed.

X-ray streak and framing camera techniques

This paper reviews recent developments and applications of ultrafast diagnostic techniques for x-ray measurements. These techniques, based on applications of image converter devices, are already capable of significantly important resolution capabilities. Techniques capable of time resolution in the sub-nanosecond regime are being considered. Mechanical cameras are excluded from considerations as are devices using phosphors or fluors as x-ray converters.

Determination of Fluid-Induced Loads From Strain Gages: Theory, Equations, and Error Analysis (open access)

Determination of Fluid-Induced Loads From Strain Gages: Theory, Equations, and Error Analysis

Strain gages are to be used on the LOFT piping to determine load resultants during the subcooled portion of blowdown in Loss-of-Coolant Experiments. This report discusses the configuration of strain gages to be installed. The selected configuration is shown to: be sufficient to determine the desired load resultants; provide for measurement redundancy; and provide an evaluation of the applicability of the analytical assumptions made in obtaining load resultants from the measured strains. Data reduction equations are derived and an error analysis is performed. Data obtained from an analytical model of a Loss-of-Coolant Experiment is analyzed, showing that the error bounds on the load resultants are less than 12 percent of the load, provided the analytical assumptions are not violated.

Decontamination and disposition of facilities program

The Program Plan represents the top level guidance document for stating and performing the objectives of the Decontamination and Disposition (D and D) Program. The program objectives, historical data, and program description are presented, along with the top level planning. The planning includes a statement of the funding basis and the corresponding first and second level activity network schedules. The management plan is included which describes the procedures to be used for cost and schedule control and reporting, purchasing and subcontract control, and program and engineering data control. The requirements for the quality assurance plan, operational safety plan, and training plan are presented.

Oceanic distribution and geochemistry of several trace elements at GEOSECS stations (open access)

Oceanic distribution and geochemistry of several trace elements at GEOSECS stations

The biogeochemical and physical processes operating in the oceans create substantial geographical and vertical variations in the oceanic distribution of many trace elements. These variations are brought about by diverse mechanisms and involve trace elements of a wide spectrum of physicochemical and biological behavior. Thus, a knowledge of these trace element distributions can help characterize some of the ocean processes in which they participate. (auth)

19 mm ballistic range: a potpourri of techniques and recipes

The expansion of ballistic gun range facilities at LLL has introduced state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques to glovebox-enclosed ballistic guns systems. These enclosed ballistic ranges are designed for the study of one- dimensional shock phenomena in extremely toxic material such as plutonium. The extension of state-of-the-art phtographic and interferometric diagnostic systems to glovebox-enclosed gun systems introduces new design boundaries and performance criteria on optical and mechanical components. A technique for experimentally evaluating design proposals is illustrated, and several specific examples (such as, target alignment, collateral shrapnel damage, and soft recovery) are discussed. LLL comments on The Ultimate Catastrophe (open access)

LLL comments on The Ultimate Catastrophe

This correspondence provides a discussion of purported hazards of nuclear energy production and weapons research. The possibility of atmospheric burn and oceanic burn are discounted, and the cross sections of Nitrogen are investigated and the concentration of D[sub 2]O in the oceans are considered. In conclusion, extremely conservative calculations demonstrated that it is completely impossible for either the earth`s atmosphere or sea to sustain fusion reactions of either thermonuclear nuclear chain reaction type. And, in particular, such reactions cannot be triggered by the explosion of nuclear weapons, even those having unrealistically high yield and impractical high yield-to-weight.
