Laboratory Studies of the Effects of Pressure and Dissolved Gas Supersaturation on Turbine-Passed Fish
The objective of this study was to examine the relative importance of pressure changes as a source of turbine-passage injury and mortality. Specific tests were designed to quantify the response of fish to rapid pressure changes typical of turbine passage, with and without the complication of the fish being acclimated to gas supersaturated water. We investigated the responses of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha), and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) to these two stresses, both singly and in combination.

Wear and friction behavior of Zr implanted D3 steel
Multicharged, pure, high current and pulsed ion beams of Zr have been extracted from a metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA) source and implanted into AISI D3 (C: 2-2,35%, Mn: 0,60%, Si: 0,60%, Cr: 11-13,50%, Ni: 0,30%, W: 1%, V: 1%) tool steel samples at the 3,6.1016, 5.1016 and 1.1017 ions/cm2 doses. The wear resistance and friction coefficient have been estimated using pin-on-disc wear tests. Implantation of Zr decreased the wear loss and friction coefficient. RBS, AES and SEM Microprobe analyses were used as a guide for explanation of implantation's effects.

Secure, efficient data transport and replica management for high-performance data-intensive computing.
An emerging class of data-intensive applications involve the geographically dispersed extraction of complex scientific information from very large collections of measured or computed data. Such applications arise, for example, in experimental physics, where the data in question is generated by accelerators, and in simulation science, where the data is generated by supercomputers. So-called Data Grids provide essential infrastructure for such applications, much as the Internet provides essential services for applications such as e-mail and the Web. We describe here two services that we believe are fundamental to any Data Grid: reliable, high-speed transport and replica management. Our high-speed transport service, GridFTP, extends the popular FTP protocol with new features required for Data Grid applications, such as striping and partial file access. Our replica management service integrates a replica catalog with GridFTP transfers to provide for the creation, registration, location, and management of dataset replicas. We present the design of both services and also preliminary performance results. Our implementations exploit security and other services provided by the Globus Toolkit.

Oral History Interview with Robert Allender, September 23, 2001
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Allender. Allender was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa 21 November 1925 and enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school in 1943. He qualified for sonar school while in boot camp and went to San Diego. Upon graduating from the school, he was sent to duty aboard the USS YMS-387, an auxiliary motor minesweeper. He describes his time on the YMS, engaged in coastal minesweeping and training prospective minesweeper crews. He left the minesweeper in December 1944 and was assigned to the commissioning crew of a coastal patrol craft in Portland, Oregon in the spring of 1945. He describes convoy duty between Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific, and operations near Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam and Ulithi. He recalls that following the Japanese surrender, his patrol craft was sent to Yap to accept the surrender of the Japanese garrison. The ship left Ulithi in November 1945 and returned to Charleston, South Carolina for decommissioning. He was discharged from the Navy in April 1946.

Spin Effects in the Fragmentation of Transversely Polarized and Unpolarized Quarks.
We study the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into a non-collinear (k{perpendicular} {ne} 0) spinless hadron and the fragmentation of an unpolarized quark into a non collinear transversely polarized spin 1/2 baryon. These nonperturbative properties are described by spin and k{perpendicular} dependent fragmentation functions and are revealed in the observation of single spin asymmetries. Recent data on the production of pions in polarized semi-inclusive DIS and long known data on A polarization in unpolarized p-N processes are considered: these new fragmentation functions can describe the experimental results and the single spin effects in the quark fragmentation turn out to be surprisingly large.

L Polarization in Unpolarized Hadron Reactions.
The transverse polarization observed in the inclusive production of {Lambda} hyperons in the high energy collisions of unpolarized hadrons is tackled by considering a new set of spin and {kappa}{perpendicular} dependent quark fragmentation functions. Simple phenomenological expressions for these new ''polarizing fragmentation functions'' are obtained by a fit of the data on {Lambda}'s and {bar {Lambda}}'s produced in p - N processes.

Bilayer Conductive-Oxide Buffer Layer Structures for High-J{sub c} YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-d} Coated Conductors
Epitaxial, conductive-oxide buffer layers having bilayer configurations have been deposited on biaxially textured nickel substrates (RABiTS) by rf and dc-sputter techniques. The conductive bilayer structures comprise the layer sequences of SrRuO{sub 3}/LaNiO{sub 3}/Ni and SrRuO{sub 3}/Cu/Ni. Systematic property characterizations of the buffer layers showed excellent electrical and structural properties. High-quality epitaxial YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} (YBCO) films grown by pulsed-laser deposition on these structures exhibited critical current densities (J{sub c}) as high as 1.3 x 10{sup 6} A/cm{sup 2} at 77 K in self-field.

Multi-Kilovolt X-Ray Conversion Efficiencies
X-ray sources in the 3-7 keV energy regime can be produced by laser-irradiating mid- and high-Z gas-filled targets with high-powered lasers. A series of experiments have been performed using underdense targets that are supersonically heated with {approx} 35 kJ of 0.35 {micro}m laser light. These targets were cylindrical Be enclosures that were filled with 1-2 atms of Xe or Ar gas. L-shell x-ray emission is emitted from the plasma and detected by Bragg crystal spectrometers and x-ray diodes. Absolute flux measurements show conversion efficiencies of {approx} 10% in the multi-kilovolt x-ray emission. These sources can be used as bright x-ray backlighters or for material testing.

She tells of getting married in 1952 to a career Marine and of her life married to a World War II veteran who also served in Korea and Vietnam.

Determination of Parts-Per-Million Cesium in Simulated Nuclear Waste with the Cesium-Selective Electrode
Because the molybdophosphate electrode was not sufficiently sensitive, and the reliability of the ''liquid state'' electrode for routine analysis was uncertain, a cesium-selective electrode of the proven liquid membrane type was developed. This paper describes preparation and testing of a liquid membrane electrode that contains cesium tetraphenylboron dissolved in 4-ethylnitrobenzene.
