Development of passive electronic components for instrumentation of improved geothermal logging tools and components. Annual progress report
Short term objectives for well-logging instrumentation are circuits which can operate at temperatures in the range 275/sup 0/C to 350/sup 0/C; the medium term goal is operation up to 500/sup 0/C, and the long term goal is to achieve operation at 1000/sup 0/C. It is apparent that useful electronic circuits will require the combination of both passive components and active devices. In order to meet the compatibility requirements, the basic technology which has been selected in this project is the chemical vapor deposition of metal interconnections, resistor material, dielectric material and passivating material. It is to be emphasized that this is a thin-film, not thick-film, technology which is compatible with the processing methods used in fabricating either semiconductor or integrated thermionic devices, and produces components which are electrically compatible with those devices. The investigation in this project is primarily directed toward tungsten metallization, tungsten-silicon resistors, and silicon nitride dielectric and passivation.

In Vivo Gamma Lung Measurements--a Mathematical Model
A low-background facility is described for rneasuring lung burdens of U, Th, and other nuclides in vivo. Problems associated with this method of radiation measurement are discussed. A mathennatical, computer-oriented simulation was devised to gain insight into the relation of the net observed radiation spectrum to the burden of radioactivity in the body or its organs. Chest cavities for persons of three sizes were synthesized in a three-coordinate space comprised of one-inch cubes and including a 9-in.-diameter crystal detector. Data, describing the tissue composition of each cube in the body and the characteristic radiation attenuation for each tissue-type, were coded for use with a program on a high-speed digital computer. Efficiencies for measuring radiation emitted by numerous point sources of enriched uranium were calculated. Data on in vivo measurement efficiency were obtained assuming uniform distribution of radioactive material throughout the lungs and also for nonuniform deposits. The effects of individual size and geometry, and of detector position on the measurement efficiency were determined for these twvo categories and radiation flux distributions on the detector face were computed in some cases. Data are appended and a flow diagram of the computer program is included. (C.H.)

ORR Operations for Period April 1960-April 1961
Conversion of the ORR from 20 to 30 Mw operating level was achieved during July 1960 after a scheduled shutdown for completion of a new cooling system. Operating time reached a high of 82% during the last quarter of 1960. The first quarter of 1961 showed an operating time of 80% despite 2 shutdowns and some additional down time to repair mechanisms associated with the shim rods. Changes were made in the south engineering test facility for GCR test loops. Detailed data taken from quarterly operational reports are included. (J.R.D.)

Review of single transient oscillographic recorders with gigahertz bandwidth
In laser driven inertial confinement fusion research, at Livermore, we are diagnosing many phenomena that occur in a time frame that exceeds the capabilities of even the most advanced, present day oscillographic recording instruments. Many of the by-products of the interaction between the laser beam and fuel pellet are monitored to determine the specifics of the fusion process. By the use of appropriate detectors, we convert the information contained in the radiated by-products to electrical signals which are recorded on high bandwidth oscillographic recorders. Our present range of recording capabilities for one x-ray diagnostic measurement in use at Livermore is shown. A commonly used configuration consists of an XRD-31 x-ray detector connected to a direct access Tektronix R7912 transient digitizer using 1/2 in. diameter air dielectric coaxial cable. This configuration gives a system fwhm of approximately 335 ps. Our premier configuration, on the other hand, consists of an improved response detector and a French Thomson-CSF TSN-660 oscilloscope with a shorter length of coaxial cable (typically 20 feet). The system fwhm in this case is less than 120 ps which is our fastest oscillographic recording system at the present time.

Electron cyclotron resonant heating (ECRH) diagnostic system on TMX
The ECRH diagnostics system monitors the net power delivered to the plasma by four 200-kW gyrotron oscillators, the frequency of each gyrotron, and some operating parameters of the gyrotron power supply system. The combination CAMAC- and GPIB-based data acquisition system is under desktop computer control that provides the capability for data conversion and display. The data acquisition system is also interfaced to the main computer system that acquires and archives the data.

Inelastic Strong Interactions at High Energies. [Cross Sections, Field Theory]
A method permitting the calculation of inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections at high energies starting from an arbitrary field theory was worked out. The method relies on a functional integral representation of the generating functional of inclusive cross sections and on the use of semiclassical methods. The inclusive cross section is proportional to the absolute square of the Fourier transform of a special soliton solution of the classical field equations in zeroth order semi-classical approximation. A conserved topological quantum number that has a nonzero value for the soliton solution was found. Future research to be performed in this field under the contract is described including applications to various field theories and the exploration of connections with Reggeon field theory.

Position and profile of a multiampere proton beam
The spacial profile of a bunched or unbunched proton beam may be found by using a highly collimated molecular beam of N/sub 2/. A certain fraction of the molecular N/sub 2/ will be ionized as it crosses the proton beam. By measuring the N/sub 2//sup +/ current as a function of theta the cross section of the beam is directly obtained. As an example, a 10 A proton beam of diameter 1 mm is considered.

Plutonium Residue Recovery (PuRR) project quarterly progress report, April--June 1989
A material-balance flowsheet for ash-heel processing has been prepared. The major process features are (1) reduction of Pu into a calcium-zinc alloy and selective electrolytic recovery of the Pu from the alloy, (2) removal of americium as a waste, (3) concentration of nontransuranic tramp elements in a zinc waste, (4) removal of oxygen and recovery of calcium by electrolysis of CaO, and (5) zinc recycle by evaporation. Based on this idealized flowsheet, the mass of solid waste is only 62% of that of the original residue. This is accomplished by recycling virtually all the reagents and discarding the oxygen as CO and CO{sub 2}. The pyrochemical recovery of Pu from incinerator ash heel from the Rocky Flats Plant was investigated. During this period, zinc-calcium alloys were used to reduce the PuC{sub 2} in the ash. Reduction of ash heel has been attempted with zinc-calcium alloys containing 2, 6, and 10 wt% calcium after the reduction. These resulted in extractions of 95%, 97%, and 99.5%, respectively, of the Pu from the salt. Following exposure of the reduction alloy to a ZnCl{sub 2}-bearing salt, the Pu was removed effectively from the alloy; however, the Pu recovered in the salt did not complete …
